On The Development Of Catholic Moral Teaching (Chapter 1: Halakhic Precedent), David Salzillo Dec 2022

On The Development Of Catholic Moral Teaching (Chapter 1: Halakhic Precedent), David Salzillo

Theology Student Scholarship

This paper proposes 1) that Matthew 16:19 refers to the practice of halakha (in Judaism, the application of the Torah’s moral, legal, and ceremonial precepts to real-life cases), and thus confers on the apostles—and their successors in the Catholic Church—the authority to apply and adapt Christian moral teaching to new situations and 2) that the rules and norms of halakha provide the Catholic Church with a way of reconciling development and even revision of Catholic moral teaching with the Church’s claim to infallibility in matters of faith and morals. Especially given the recent controversies regarding the German Synodal Way, my …

Excluded From Our City: Clement Of Alexandria And The Porous Frontier Of Early Christian Identity, Jordan C. Goneau-Goncalves

Theology Graduate Theses

In the Paedagogus, the second volume of his three major works, Clement of Alexandria develops a “Christian” ethic and sense of identity, which is dependent on one’s “habits, deeds, and passions.”1 The work itself is directed toward “you who are children” and is intended to instruct Christians in matters of character and behavior.2 Though he is preoccupied with attempting to educate—rather, allowing his understanding of Christ to educate—Christians in regard to appropriate behaviors and values, thereby defining and maintaining a unique sense of Christian identity in late second century Alexandria, he is also at home in a …

Deification And Creation: A Comparative, Historical And Systematic View, Cole Desantis Jan 2021

Deification And Creation: A Comparative, Historical And Systematic View, Cole Desantis

Theology Graduate Theses

Deification - the belief that the souls of those in heaven are united to, and participate in, the Inner Life of God - is an important (though in Western Christian thought underappreciated) aspect of traditional Christian soteriology. In this thesis, I will argue that the traditional Christian views on deification presuppose the notion that grace does not contradict nature, but rather elevates it, and therefore one’s view on creation, anthropology and the metaphysical parameters of how a transcendent God relates to His creation delineate or determine the parameters of how one views the doctrine of deification. In demonstrating this point, …

The Rationality Of Motherhood, Genevieve Kineke Dec 2020

The Rationality Of Motherhood, Genevieve Kineke

Theology Graduate Theses

Since both men and women, made in the divine image, bear rational souls, and the Catholic understanding of redemption requires that persons respond freely to the gift of grace, Saint Paul’s comment to Timothy that women can be saved through childbearing (cf. 1 Timothy 2:13-15) indicates that motherhood must be rational. This thesis responds to three different arguments against that premise—those of Simone deBeauvoir, Julia Kristeva, and Gertrude von le Fort—by illustrating that Thomas Aquinas’ application of Aristotelian principles restores both a proper understanding of rationality and how our hylemorphic construct directs us to our supernatural end. Weaving together a …

The Development Of A Theology Of Tradition: Basil's On The Holy Spirit And Yves Congar's Tradition And Traditions, Sister Dominica Bickerton O.P. Jul 2020

The Development Of A Theology Of Tradition: Basil's On The Holy Spirit And Yves Congar's Tradition And Traditions, Sister Dominica Bickerton O.P.

Theology Graduate Theses

This thesis examines the particular contributions of Basil of Caesarea on the development of tradition by evaluating his claim that he is not innovating. Basil’s creativity, as examined by Andrew Radde-Gallwitz, allows him to develop more explicitly the reception of customs and oral teachings as apostolic tradition. The thesis uses modern scholarship on both the Council of Nicaea and Basil to examine Basil’s defense of “written and unwritten traditions” in his On the Holy Spirit. Particular attention is given to the use of liturgy and the teachings of the fathers by Basil in his defense of his own doxology. …

A New Adventure In China: Personal And Theological Discoveries Around Jingjiao And Nestorian Christianity, Tianyi Yuan

Theology Student Scholarship

Major: Theology and Philosophy

Faculty Mentor: Dr. Arthur Urbano, Theology

This project explored the inculturation and vitality of faith that made the mission of ancient Syrian Nestorian Christianity into China possible. My research is summarized into four discoveries:

1. the discovery of the history of missionary journey, religious exchanges and the theological connection between Nestorian Christianity in Syria and Jingjiao (or the “luminous Religion,” which is the historical Chinese name of Nestorian Christianity) in China;
2. the discovery of Jingjiao documents;
3. the discovery of fundamental Christian doctrines in Jing-Jiao documents;
4. the discovery of Jingjiao relics in China, which …

Women As Agents Of Salvation In The Old Testament: An Appraisal Of Hannah And Abigail In Israel's Early Monarchy (1 Samuel 1-3, 25), Lazarus Ejike Onuh Jan 2017

Women As Agents Of Salvation In The Old Testament: An Appraisal Of Hannah And Abigail In Israel's Early Monarchy (1 Samuel 1-3, 25), Lazarus Ejike Onuh

Theology Graduate Theses

The women of the Old Testament were not merely ancillary to the men. From the matriarchal era down to the monarchical period, the Old Testament eloquently attests to the equality and shared responsibility between man and woman. The creation of הָֽאָדָם֙ (mankind) in the image and likeness of God confers on both the male and female an ontological equality; an equality that is shown in their joint authority over creation (Genesis 1:27-28). While not denying the fact that the Old Testament can rightly be viewed as a product of predominantly male authors and features a galaxy of male actors, it …

Navigating The Use Of Biblical Numerology In Nauigatio Sancti Brendani, Darcy E. Ireland Jul 2015

Navigating The Use Of Biblical Numerology In Nauigatio Sancti Brendani, Darcy E. Ireland

Theology Graduate Theses

The early ninth-century Hiberno-Latin Nauigatio Sancti Brendani (“The Voyage of Saint Brendan”) is a text teeming with references to the Scriptures. The text is simply a loose, but allegorized, retelling of a supposed seven-year voyage from Ireland to find a terra repromissionis sanctorum (“Promised Land of the Saints”) somewhere in the vast ocean by the sixth-century abbot Brendan and a number of followers. The text achieves its purpose, which is the promulgation of an ideal model of ascetic life during a time of ecclesial reform throughout the island, by employing a number of literary motifs, including the doubling of a …

The Physical Death Of Jesus Christ: The “Swoon Theory” And The Medical Response, Kate Hill May 2015

The Physical Death Of Jesus Christ: The “Swoon Theory” And The Medical Response, Kate Hill

Spring 2015, Faith and Science

The Crucifixion and the Resurrection are two of the most important foundational elements of the Christian religion. There are some skeptics, however, who believe that the Crucifixion was not “completed”, and that Jesus never actually died on the cross. If this hypothesis were true, it would call the entire Christian system of beliefs into question. One theory of this sort that grew in popularity with 18th century rationalists became known as the “Resuscitation Theory”, or “Swoon Theory”. Put simply, this theory states that Jesus did not actually die during the Crucifixion. Rather, he simply “swooned” and fell unconscious while …

"Without Blinding Darkness": The Imagery Of Divine Light In "Nauigatio Sancti Brendani", Darcy Ireland Mar 2015

"Without Blinding Darkness": The Imagery Of Divine Light In "Nauigatio Sancti Brendani", Darcy Ireland

Theology Student Scholarship

The motif of divine light is prominent in such early medieval Irish and Latin texts as Adomnán’s Life of Columba (Vita Columbæ), Vision of Saint Paul (Visio Sancti Pauli), and the Life of Brendan (Betha Brenainn). The symbol of divine light, a featured device in the Scriptures intended to emphasize the manifestation of the supernatural, if not the presence of the holy Spirit itself, is typically discussed by the patristic writers. In turn, the use of divine light in the Scriptures and the patristic writers influenced the texts of Christianity in early medieval Ireland, …

Remarks On The Theological Aspect Of The Hell-Motif In Síaburcharpat Con Culaind, Darcy Ireland Oct 2014

Remarks On The Theological Aspect Of The Hell-Motif In Síaburcharpat Con Culaind, Darcy Ireland

Theology Student Scholarship

The early Middle Irish story Síaburcharpat Con Culaind unfortunately suffers from a lack of scholarly attention, particularly from the theological perspective. This paper proposes that the five quatrains which occupy lines 9438-9458 of the Lebor na hUidre copy together serve as the potent, appropriate apex to a tale which not only functions as an ode to Cú Chulainn but also as a forum through which are raised theological queries concerning the fate under the Christian dispensation of pre-Christian Celtic legendary figures.

Initial focus will be cast on the significance of the hell-motif within the Síaburcharpat (including a remark on the …

Colleen Carroll Campbell: Catholicism, Feminism, And Women Saints, Hannah Dulmaine

Fall 2014, Storytelling and the Life of Faith

Many views of modern day feminism appear to contradict the teachings of the Catholic Church. However, Colleen Carroll Campbell, an award-winning author and journalist, was determined from a young age to reconcile feminism with Catholicism. With the guidance and wisdom of female saints, Campbell conveys the importance and relevance of faith for modern day Catholic women, especially in regard to controversial issues such as contraception, abortion, fertility, and motherhood.

Overcoming The Division: The Relationship Between The Eucharist And Social Justice, Lauren S. Murphy Jan 2014

Overcoming The Division: The Relationship Between The Eucharist And Social Justice, Lauren S. Murphy

Theology Graduate Theses

Overcoming the Division: The Relationship between the Eucharist and Social Justice explores the intimate connection between worship of God and service of neighbor. Arguing for the primacy of the Eucharist, I first outline the present problem of the separation between the Eucharist and social justice in the life of the Church and offer possible reasons for this situation. I then proceed to describe the relationship between worship and justice as understood in Scripture and the early Church, giving special attention to the Old Testament prophets, the Gospels, Paul’s First Letter to the Corinthians, and John Chrysostom. This leads me …

The Wounded Warrior: A Christological Perspective, Margaret Y. Wakelee

Theology Graduate Theses

This thesis is a Christological reflection on the wounded warrior as a human person whose Christian hope is the resurrection of the body. It primarily considers the servicemen and women who have suffered irreparable damage to their bodies and the consequences of such injuries for the wounded warriors’ bodies post-resurrection. In particular, this thesis examines how the human person is a psychosomatic union, the retention of the marks of crucifixion in Christ’s Resurrected Body, the wounded bodies of martyrs and stigmatics, and the Mystical Body of Christ in glory. The key difference between the wounds of Christ, the martyrs and …

The Redemptive Act Of Reading: Richard Crashaw & The Teresean Liturgy, Alexandra Finn-Atkins May 2012

The Redemptive Act Of Reading: Richard Crashaw & The Teresean Liturgy, Alexandra Finn-Atkins

English Student Scholarship

The essay entitled “The Redemptive Act of Reading: Richard Crashaw and the Teresean liturgy” written by Alexandra Finn-Atkins is centered on Richard Crashaw’s trilogy of poems dedicated to the sixteenth century Saint Teresa of Ávila. The trilogy consists of “The Hymne,” “An Apologie” and “The Flaming Heart” and makes a subtle comparison between the act of reading Saint Teresa of Ávila and the Christian liturgy. The essay innovatively analyzes the ‘Teresean liturgy’ established by Crashaw through the external and internal liturgical elements of the Christian liturgy that are used to describe Crashaw’s personal experience reading the religious writings of Saint …
