The second section deals with the illness from a theological perspective, especially in terms of how depression is influenced by the tension that exists between Law and Gospel. In the material recorded in Paul's First Epistle to the Corinthian congregation, the reader comes into contact with what Paul refers to as charismata, or spiritual gifts. Chapter 14 of this Epistle concentrates on two of these charismata, namely speaking in tongues and prophecy. Both are "utterance gifts", and from Paul's treatment of them, it seems that there is a definite link between them. This study is an effort to inform the parish pastor of his rights in this area. It is written from the viewpoint and knowledge of a layman and is not an attempt to present legal advice in any particular situation which might occur during a pastor's functions as a counselor. It is merely an attempt to lay the facts before him and hopefully enable a more enlightened approach to the possible legal pitfalls of the counseling situation. In every case where there is a legal question involved the pastor should consult an attorney.
