Sensing The Spirit: Wesley's Empiricism And His Use Of The Language Of Spiritual Sensation, James E. Pedlar
Sensing The Spirit: Wesley's Empiricism And His Use Of The Language Of Spiritual Sensation, James E. Pedlar
The Asbury Journal
This paper examines the relationship betweenJohn Wesley's empiricism and his use of the language of "spiritual sensation." Through a close reading of Wesley's own espousal of empiricism, as well as his use of the language of the spiritual senses, it will be argued that Wesley, while committed to empiricism as a natural epistemology, views the experience of the Spirit as something which is known intuitively. H is references to the spiritual senses are therefore best understood as an analogy for this intuitively known experience of the Spirit. While Wesley's discussions of spiritual sensation are not simply an extension of his …
Inhabiting The Garden: Bible, Theology And Mission, Lawson G. Stone
Inhabiting The Garden: Bible, Theology And Mission, Lawson G. Stone
The Asbury Journal
This essay explores the role of biblical exegesis in the task of Christian theology and in the contemporary global mission of the church from the perspective of an Old Testament scholar. It poses the question what a biblical exegesis would look like that was consistently Christian in its assumptions while, at the same time, honest and competent in dealing with the phenomena of the biblical text. Using the exegesis of the early centuries of the church as a case study, the essay develops insights into the role of serious biblical study in empowering the early church's vibrant expansion through the …

Luther On Christ And The Old Testament, James S. Preus
Concordia Theological Monthly
Careful reading of this article will contribute to getting the hermeneutical debate in our Synod beyond the present impasse that has been created by a non-Lutheran posing of the alternatives by so many who are involved in the debate.

Walther's Editorial In The First Issue Of Der Lutheraner, Alex W. Guebert
Concordia Theological Monthly
The German population of the western part of America is evidently growing day by day. Consequently there is also an increasing number of those who profess the same faith that Luther once proclaimed. Yet the members of no other church body are so forlorn as those of the Evangelical Lutheran Church. Even those who still call themselves Lutheran live so far apart and are in such poor circumstances that in many places they are in no position to organize a congregation and call a Lutheran pastor who can minister to their spiritual needs.
Faith Healing: A Discussion, Edward J. Mahnke
Faith Healing: A Discussion, Edward J. Mahnke
Concordia Theological Monthly
Is it right to promise health or material advantage to people who practice a religious life? This question is basic to the considerations involved in the practice of faith healing.
Man threatened by foreign powers, missiles, disaster plans. evacuation routes, tossed back and forward by doctrines of every kind, finds himself shaken. He is uncertain about God. He needs health and money to maintain control of his life and future. In Deut. 8:17, 18 the Lord insists that He is the source of all goodness. But He also warns man not to think of God as a resource by which …
Religion In The Public Schools, Carl S. Meyer
Religion In The Public Schools, Carl S. Meyer
Concordia Theological Monthly
To the traditional three R's in education many would place as the first a fourth R - Religion. Some maintain that Religion should be taught only in the schools of the church; some say that Religion or spiritual values should be taught in the schools of the state. Others have urged that the fourth R in modern education should be Right Relations or Human Relations. The debate touches on the question of basic objectives in education and involves the question of the relationship between church and state. It embraces the questions: Do the functions of the state include the teaching …

In the dramatic episode before Pilate, Caesar's procurator, Christ said: "My kingdom is not of this world. If My kingdom were of this world, then would My servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews; but now is My kingdom not from hence" (John 18:36). Christ unquestionably possessed a kingdom, one of power, righteousness, wealth, stability, beauty, but now as He stands before Caesar, He seems to be dispossessed. So great was His extremity that the primus inter pares of the small band, the very one who shortly before had wielded a sword to save Him, an …
St. Paul On Social Relationships, Rthur Carl Piepkorn
St. Paul On Social Relationships, Rthur Carl Piepkorn
Concordia Theological Monthly
There are in visible Christendom two types of social theorists who derive small comfort from a study of St. Paul's letters. The first group comprises the extreme mystical individualists, who think of Christianity as being exclusively an individual escape from the wrath to come, while the second is composed of the social theorists, who insist that the Church's chief reason for existence is to prepare the nations of mankind for the establishment by God through the Church of "a home, in history and in the world, in which men shall be brothers in Christ under the paternal arch of [God's] …
Why Preach?, John H. Fritz
Why Preach?, John H. Fritz
Concordia Theological Monthly
Preaching, if it is to serve its divine purpose, must have a very definite objective. This the preacher should not only know, but of this he should be conscious. What is the objective? Why preach?
Holy Scripture Or Christ?, Th. Engelder
Holy Scripture Or Christ?, Th. Engelder
Concordia Theological Monthly
Men are asking us to substitute for the authority of Scripture the authority of Christ or at least to subordinate the former to the latter. If we did that, we would be left without any authority for our teaching and without any foundation for our faith. And that means, of course, that there would be no Christian theology and no Christian religion.
