The Power To (Dis)Please: Supernatural Horror And History In Célanire Cou-Coupé, Livi Yoshioka-Maxwell
The Power To (Dis)Please: Supernatural Horror And History In Célanire Cou-Coupé, Livi Yoshioka-Maxwell
Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature
In this essay, I read Maryse Condé’s Célanire cou-coupé (Who Slashed Celanire’s Throat?) as a work of supernatural horror fiction in order to participate in Condé’s reflections on the complexities of interpreting histories of violence. In response to Chris Bongie’s call to re-evaluate Condé’s engagement with popular literature, I contend that popular literacies can be just as useful as more arcane cultural knowledge for interpreting this and other novels by Condé. Previous studies of Condé’s use of popular devices in Célanire cou-coupé approached the novel as an example of the Todorovian fantastique. In positing the eponymous Célanire …
Popular Literature In The Abbasid Caliphate: How It Represented And Defined The Culture Of The Abbasids, Genevieve Weidner
Popular Literature In The Abbasid Caliphate: How It Represented And Defined The Culture Of The Abbasids, Genevieve Weidner
University of Massachusetts Undergraduate History Journal
Often times, the study of history focuses on concrete events, such as wars or political measures. In a history classroom, this is usually not out of neglect, but for the sake of time. In order to cover the broadest timeline, history teachers often gloss over the culture of each region they study. However, the culture is an essential part of history. The culture explains what people valued, which contributes to the events that usually define the course of history. This paper examines two styles of popular literature during the Abbasid Caliphate. By examining poetry and the prose works of Kalila …
Women's Rhetoric And The Romance Novel Genre, Kathryn M. O'Neil
Women's Rhetoric And The Romance Novel Genre, Kathryn M. O'Neil
Theses and Dissertations
Romance novel readers and authors often face shaming by those who have power/influence over them; namely the popular media and academic community, who claim the genre is sexist and formulaic. Because of this, women are made to feel guilty for enjoying romance. However, by applying Krista Ratcliffe’s rhetorical listening technique to Janet Radway’s ethnography, Reading the Romance, select romance novel texts, and interviews with ten romance authors, we discover that the romance novel genre is more complex than it gets credit for. Romance novels can be empowering and provide solidarity among readers and between readers and authors. Through the …

Bloudy Tygrisses: Murderous Women In Early Modern English Drama And Popular Literature, Alexandra Hill
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis examines artistic and literary images of murderous women in popular print published in sixteenth and seventeenth-century England. The construction of murderous women in criminal narratives, published between 1558 and 1625 in pamphlet, ballad, and play form, is examined in the context of contemporary historical records and cultural discourse. Chapter One features a literature review of the topic in recent scholarship. Chapter Two, comprised of two subsections, discusses representations of early modern women in contemporary literature and criminal archives. The subsections in Chapter Two examine early modern treatises, sermons, and essays concerning the nature of women, the roles and …

Liminality In Popular Fiction, Adam Crowley
Liminality In Popular Fiction, Adam Crowley
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Most popular narratives are composed of segments. A narrative segment is a sequence in which those narrative elements fundamental to the immediate progression of the narrative are resolved. These resolutions can be true resolutions, or they can be resolutions in part. If they are resolutions in part, the narrative elements in question must be sufficiently transformed so that their role becomes radically different, less fundamental. When narrative segments terminate, we become aware of that which is hidden by the logical progression of the segment itself: the author's authority to introduce new narrative elements without warning or apparent need. In short, …
