A poetry thesis exploring issues of loss, death, creation, imagination, family, interpersonal relationships, nature, sexuality, and writing. The manuscript includes a preface that discusses literary influences such as Ai, H.D., and Sharon Olds, as well as writing in forms such as the dramatic monologue, imagistic poem, and confessional poem. Three main sections organize the manuscript's poems.

The first series consists of numerous songs and poems all written by her, as well as personal notes and edits of her work. The second series contains sheet music, song lyrics, and essays. The third and final series is comprised of artwork by Ruth Scott (a local artist who collaborated with Georgia Shaw Prescott), newspaper clippings, business letters, and personal letters, in addition to a collection of miscellaneous papers whose purpose is not quite clear. This portfolio, In Order to Live, includes some of the poetry and creative nonfiction pieces I wrote as a Creative Writing Minor at Cedarville University. “Printmaking” was published in the June 2015 edition of Spry, and “Deep Creek Lake” will be published in the summer anthology of Snapping Twig. The collection aims to redeem memory and salvage the sermon from previous experiences. I wrote about fingerprints, worms, grand pianos, the trinity, heartbreak, cancer and so much more to understand why any of it matters, in order to live.

This poetry collection engages with the mutable nature of memory and its instantiations: memory as artifact, memory as place, memory as story, memory as compulsion. Influenced by the lyric meditations of Robert Hass and Li-Young Lee, the intellectual clarity of Elizabeth Bishop, the place-oriented imagism of Bashō and Gary Snyder, and the reflexive, self-conscious impulse of Sharon Olds, the poems tackle a vast geography of recollection—from Kyoto to the Okefenokee to the turnings and obsessions of the author’s mind itself. Like the ever-circling lines in the skin of trees, sometimes the whole of a person is peeled back, layer by layer, until only seeds remain. Names, faces, stories, and relationships are unmade and molded into new shapes. Without warning, those left at the base, at the roots, can’t recognize this maple’s form. They hold a pile of leaves, a bottle of glue, and the hope that something familiar will take sprout again. The tree becomes new, and its tangled branches reach out.
