Desert Body, Lauren Mckinnon May 2023

Desert Body, Lauren Mckinnon

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This thesis is a collection of poems examining certain paradoxes of my body. As a survivor of sexual violence, my body relives trauma which makes it feel uninhabitable. I compare my experiences with the Southern Utah desert. The physical beauty, destruction and inhabitability of the desert teaches me to accept my body as both beautiful and full of grief. The poems move chronologically through my life, beginning with an abusive relationship at the age of sixteen, a move to Moab at nineteen, and becoming a mother at twenty-five. Ultimately, with the desert as my guide, I learn to accept my …

Slow Emergencies, Jordyn N. Rhorer Jan 2016

Slow Emergencies, Jordyn N. Rhorer

Theses and Dissertations--English

Like the ever-circling lines in the skin of trees, sometimes the whole of a person is peeled back, layer by layer, until only seeds remain. Names, faces, stories, and relationships are unmade and molded into new shapes. Without warning, those left at the base, at the roots, can’t recognize this maple’s form. They hold a pile of leaves, a bottle of glue, and the hope that something familiar will take sprout again. The tree becomes new, and its tangled branches reach out. These poems explore the lives of those living with and caring for those with dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. …

An Eelnet Made For The Eel Fighting: Layers Of Obscurity And The Continuous Present In The Space Of Robert Lowell's Poetry, Alena Jones Jan 2008

An Eelnet Made For The Eel Fighting: Layers Of Obscurity And The Continuous Present In The Space Of Robert Lowell's Poetry, Alena Jones

Honors Papers

In this essay I undertake to describe how the continuous present might persist on Lowell's page. I move from "Epilogue" first to a Heideggerian critic, Adam Kirsch, and then to Heidegger, whose theory of language establishes a space where the continuous present is always possible on the page. But here, where Heidegger says it should succeed, language proves insufficient for Lowell. Lowell exposes his own failure to shape his material using literary devices like journey and climax. His attempts to align his writing with visual media allow his specific literary failures to become sites of the successful preservation of a …

Gypsy Soul, Wolf Spirit, Pamela Marie Davis-Allen Jan 2008

Gypsy Soul, Wolf Spirit, Pamela Marie Davis-Allen

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Gypsy Soul, Wolf Spirit is a collection of thirty-six poems; the majority of the poems are written in - or evolved from drafts written in - iambic pentameter. Writing formal poetry was a challenge I decided to embrace because I believed that it would allow me to evolve as a poet.

The themes that connect these poems are represented by the collection's title: Gypsy Soul, Wolf Spirit. There is the dominant thematic presence of both the natural world and the spiritual realm within the collection. My intention was to lift the reader to a state of mind, through language, where …

Old Maps, Samuel H. Manhart Jan 2002

Old Maps, Samuel H. Manhart

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in English at The University of Maine, I submit a collection of poems 1 have entitled Old Maps. Many of the poems in this thesis employ natural imagery, and while it is my intent to discover and analyze the natural world, I also hope to uncover and disclose a more thorough understanding of myself through verse. The self-refledions I see in nature both surprise me and find their expression in my poetry. It is my hope, as I believe it is the hope of every poet, that …

Poems As Mnemonic Devices To Aid Grammar Recall, Carolin A. Metzger May 2000

Poems As Mnemonic Devices To Aid Grammar Recall, Carolin A. Metzger

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

This study was implemented to explore the extent to which students' performance on grammar editing exams might be affected by exposure to poems used as mnemonic devices intended to aid recall of grammar rules. The poems were used as mnemonic tools to assist subjects memory of specific grammar points. The place of grammar in writing instruction, the use of mnemonics, and the use of rhyme and rhythm are reviewed. The subjects for this study came from developmental level classes at the university level and from advanced level English as Second Language classes. The results emphasize the need for teacher-student interaction …

Legend: The Song Of The Family, The Voice Of A Woman, Kimberly Roth Shumway

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

The Song of the Family

I do not believe that lives are lived in isolation, but rather are connected by ties of humanity and of family. For me because of this intimate human connection, every life experience, trivial or tremendous, is a poem. The poems blend into one--a great symphony of the human condition. An experience, even if left unverbalized, shapes the minds of both the one experiencing it and those connected to him or her by either close or distant ties.

In this collection I combine the poetic experiences most relevant in shaping me. They are the songs of …

A New Topography: Elizabeth Bishop's Late Poems, Jennifer Soalt

Honors Papers

Geography III, the title of Elizabeth Bishop's last book of poems prepares her readers for both a passage through familiar territory and an exploration of unmapped terrain. A return to the northern landscape of A Cold Spring and the southern landscape of Brazil is promised at the same time that a third and entirely new landscape is hinted at; we can find the Nova Scotia of "At the Fishouses" and "Cape Breton" in "The Moose" and "The End of March" and we can find the tropics of "Song for the Rainy Season" and "The Armadillo" in "Crusoe in England", but …

What We Bury: Poems And Epilogues, James Harry Nicholas Martin

Senior Scholar Papers

The manuscript, What We Bury: Poems and Epilogue, consists of two major parts. The first is comprised of eighteen poems, selected from the thirty-two that I had written by the end of March. Included in the eighteen, in accordance with what I had stated to be one of my aims in undertaking this project, are three poems written out of inherited forms: two, "The October Wind," (p.22) and "Wandering By the Sea For the First Time," (p.23) are sonnets and one, "Brewster Station, "(p.10) is a sestina that in the final draft was broken. Also adhering to one of my …

"Painting In Half-Light" And Other Poems, Jane Eklund

Senior Scholar Papers

Through the course of the year, I have been writing and revising poetry with a concern for the growth of my work. To that end, I took advantage of the time afforded me by the Senior Scholars Program not only to devote myself to writing, but to reading the poems of American, European and South American poets from the point of view of craft. Poets whose work has been important and influential in my writing this year include Pablo Neruda, Yannis Ritsos, Francis Jamroes, Charles Simic, Larry Levis and Pamela Stewart. The poems in my collection, "Painting in Half-Light" and …
