Grapho : Concordia Seminary Student Journal

In the spirit of fellowship, the student journals of Concordia Seminary in St. Louis and Concordia Theological Seminary in Fort Wayne have decided to use their publications as an opportunity for conversation and edification between our two student bodies. As students may have seen, we have begun to distribute each other’s journals on our campuses and now in this issue we share a collaborative project we have been working on.

The Ecclesiological Implications Of The Priesthood Of All Believers, Alan Parker Nov 2017

The Ecclesiological Implications Of The Priesthood Of All Believers, Alan Parker

Faculty Works

The Protestant Reformation encouraged the "priesthood of all believers" but how does that concept impact the local church in the Seventh-day Adventist denomination? The lack of a clear ecclesiology has hampered the growth and effectiveness of Adventism. Both Exodus 19:6 and 1 Peter 2:9 provide a theological hermeneutic for how to reframe our ecclesiology in a way consistent with the Protestant principle of every believer serving as a priest. Priests are teachers, holy representatives, and mediators. The practical implications of these three aspects are examined. Luther's struggle with papal power structures are examined in the light of his radical understanding …

Non-Ownership Principles As Understood By Lay Practitioners Of Jainism And Quakerism, David St John Mar 2017

Non-Ownership Principles As Understood By Lay Practitioners Of Jainism And Quakerism, David St John

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines how lay members of the Jain and Quaker traditions understand and navigate ideals of non-ownership. The tenets of aparigraha (non-ownership) and the testimony of simplicity are explored to show how interpretation of sacred texts leave open the possibility for financial success.

Through interviews with members of Jain and Quaker communities in the US, and textual research, I assert that proper methods for earning, maintaining and using capital in each tradition transcend prohibitions against excess accumulation. Following Foucault and Weber, I show that proper ethical ways of earning and spending money depend on community-based interpretations and self-policing.

Entrenching African Pentecostalism In The United States Of America: A Study Of A Ghanaian Founded Charismatic Church In South Florida, Raymond K. Awadzi

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

For the past three decades, there has been a rapid growth of African Pentecostal Christianity on America’s Christian religious scene. In general, researchers in Christian mission studies have concluded that the flow of Christian religious currents from Africa and other Third World countries to the West is something of a Christian mission in reverse process. Using agency and invention of tradition as the theoretical leads, this study explores the roles lay immigrants played in the rooting of the Christian Restoration Ministries International (CRMI), a Ghanaian founded charismatic church, in Miami, as a case study of how African Pentecostal churches originate …

Böll And The Burgundians: Myth And The (Re)Construction Of The German Nation , David N. Coury Jun 2001

Böll And The Burgundians: Myth And The (Re)Construction Of The German Nation , David N. Coury

Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature

Since its "rediscovery" by the Romantics, the Nibelungenlied has evolved not only into the German national epic, but has come to be synonymous with Germany and "Germanness." After the misappropriation of the saga by the Nazis, the myth, as well as the themes associated with it had become tainted, like all things heralded for their "Germanic" nature, in the immediate post-war era. One of the first writers in the post-war era to again explore the function of myth and recontextualize the saga was Heinrich Böll. Böll set about to reexamine the mythic elements of the story and did so by …
