Oral Interviews

Viena Hendrickson discussed her parent’s involvement with the socialist and workers’ movements among the Finns of northern Minnesota. She described their political and social organizations. Hendrickson also talked about her own involvement in the Socialist and Farmer-Labor parties and the latter’s eventual union with the Democratic Party. She described how women became involved in politics, especially in the Farmer-Labor Women’s Federation, and then shared her impressions of Eugene Debs, Floyd B. Olson, Elmer Benson, Henry Shipstead, Harold Stassen and Hubert Humphrey. Finally, Hendrickson discussed red baiting in the 1940s and 1950s, isolationism and her views on the United Nations.

The paperback book of photographs is from the National Military Home of Dayton, Ohio. The book documents, through photographs, what the grounds of the National Military Home looked like in the early 1900's as well as day to day life for the occupants. The book is bound by a gold string and the photographs are pasted to the pages. The book was published by the Keyes Souvenir Card Company in Dayton, Ohio and each photograph has a caption. The book is 36 pages, all illustrations, measures 26 cm x 32 cm, and the photographs measure 15 cm x 20 cm.

Speech on Colonization, anonymous, ca. 1863. A speech delivered on the efficacy and possibilities of emancipation with colonization, suggesting the expatriation of American slaves to the Caribbean upon emancipation (Figures 9 & 10.) A fascinating speech, not entirely without compassion, but pretty adamant about removing freed slaves from the U.S., possibly to Haiti, so it also falls within our West Indies Collection. String-tied sheets. Handwritten in cursive with some corrections and penciled annotations. Includes several brief newspaper clippings (one clipping lacking). Title at the top of the first page.
