Analog Versus Digital Guitar Pedals, Shaping Guitar Tones And Sparking Debates, Cameron Karren

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

This paper goes into the history of guitar effects, what exactly they are, how they have evolved, and what they are like today. It also presents the results of an experiment that compares perceptions of differences between analog and digital guitar pedals.

Midi: A Standard For Music In The Ever Changing Digital Age, Taylor Romo Dec 2018

Midi: A Standard For Music In The Ever Changing Digital Age, Taylor Romo

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) is the technology that allows synthesizers and controllers to communicate and manipulate other pieces of gear as well as computer software. This technology has permanently changed the way music is produced and performed. This paper will explore the importance of MIDI technology as a tool for music production as well as for music performance. This will be done by first examining the history and development of MIDI technology, including the reasons why it was created. Many examples will be given of how MIDI is a crucial component in recording studios, music production studios, and live …

Automation: From Consoles To Daws, Christian Ekeke

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

Since the beginning of modern music there has always been a need to implement movement into a mix. Whether it is bringing down dynamics for a classic fade out or a filter sweep slowly building into a chorus, dynamic activity in a song has always been pleasing to the average music listeners. The process that makes these mixing techniques possible is automation. Before I get into details about automation in regards to mixing I will explain common ways automation is used. Automation in a nutshell is the use of various techniques, method, system of operating or controlling a process by …

Soft Sound: A Guide To The Tools And Techniques Of Software Synthesis, Quinn Powell May 2016

Soft Sound: A Guide To The Tools And Techniques Of Software Synthesis, Quinn Powell

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

“Soft Sound” is an examination of software synthesis, the act of using computer software to create audio signals from scratch. It begins with the basics of sound, a prerequisite for understanding any form of synthesis. Then, it delves into a quick history of analog and digital synthesizers before jumping into the heart of the paper: a look at the forms of synthesis that are commonly done in software rather than analog hardware. These forms include wavetable modulation, frequency modulation, and granular synthesis. Different environments for implementing such techniques will be discussed, ranging from user-friendly virtual synthesizers to low-level programming environments. …
