Illustration Student Work

For this assignment, I wanted to tell a story of a girl unraveling the stories of the abandon kingdom she's entering. I went a surreal, atmospheric theme for this playlist so I can capture the curios yet ominous journey that the character is about to face. The song that I choose to reflect the illustration was White Palace by Christopher Larkin. The setting has a monochromatic scheme of grays while the character had dulled out colors to show that she's out of place. The character is about to cross the bridge, making her way towards the palace.

Changing Heritage, Rodolfo Maffeis, Trocchianesi Raffaella, Franzato Carlo, Mason Marco Oct 2023

Changing Heritage, Rodolfo Maffeis, Trocchianesi Raffaella, Franzato Carlo, Mason Marco

IASDR Conference Series

The paper deals with changing processes of the cultural heritage through different perspectives: how the power of the change can be recognized both in the historic art masters approach and in their representations? How these historic art masters have triggered iconographic and conceptual agents of innovation? How Design for Cultural Heritage can envision new sustainable scenarios taking into account sociopolitical, cultural and climatic changes? In this complex context and age, what are new models of cultural experiences? What is the role of digital in museums transformation? Herein we will explore new definitions of contemporary museology and museography, like the digitally …

Step 10, Jinhong Cai May 2023

Step 10, Jinhong Cai

Masters Theses

Step 10 is an experiment on provoking empathy through

abstracted elements within my studio practice. I am

proposing to craft an emotional piece without leaning

on my identity. This written thesis consists of two parts:

narrative prose and an explanation of my studio practice.

While the installation is entirely devoid of cultural or

personal references, this text-based thesis is full of them

because it is intended to inform whoever is interested in

learning more about the motive behind this creation.

The questions I bought into the thought and creation

process are: Can a piece of art still successfully bring

out …

Refigured: Separations In Portraiture, Caroline Myers May 2023

Refigured: Separations In Portraiture, Caroline Myers

All Theses

Utilizing traditional painting techniques embedded with digital syntaxes, Refigured: Separations in Portraiture, serves as a catalog of my experiences with communication in a hyperconnected world. Processing illegible information caused by my hearing loss informs the process of imposing similar boundaries within my paintings. Like a technical glitch, these obstructions create an illegible visual experience, with evidence of my process remaining as a clue for the viewer’s understanding of the image.

Though personal in nature, I expand from my experience with auditory communication to employ pertinent explorations into the sustained unpredictability of today’s ever-expanding medium that is technology. My paintings …

Graphic Design & Painting, Emily Zepp Jan 2023

Graphic Design & Painting, Emily Zepp

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

Starting with the desire to explore the connection between GD and painting, I realized the only difference between the two is the context in which the work is created. Both graphic design and painting seek to impart messages upon the viewer and explore a certain perspective. Success can be measured in both disciplines by the effectiveness of the communicated message.

A Part From You, Kenneth Rick Briggenhorst Jr. Jan 2023

A Part From You, Kenneth Rick Briggenhorst Jr.

MSU Graduate Theses

I invite empathy through art that is technologically assisted to find alternative interpretations for nontheologically informed faith. The sudden passing of my dearest friend, Jimmy, encouraged me to dig through my archives of data, to cherish all the bytes that remain of him. In this endeavor, I find that death is not the end, but a post-physical state of being. I express this sentiment in a part from you, where the work utilizes inanimate constructs to place your faith in, to make sense of the complexities of grief in a digitally tethered way of life. This life that allows many …

Somewhere In The Universe: Senior Thesis 2022, Mallory Nelson Jun 2022

Somewhere In The Universe: Senior Thesis 2022, Mallory Nelson

Honors Theses

My senior thesis, entitled Somewhere in the Universe, is an exploration of what makes a place believable, and how I as an artist can make something that doesn’t exist feel like it could. However, one of my favorite parts about art is its ability to be interpreted in unique ways. I may have had a set of intentions and ideas when creating this project, but I also am open to the ways different people interpret this art.

The conceptual basis of my thesis is an attempt at worldbuilding. These worlds are based on various Greek and Roman Goddesses from the …

Materiality Of Space And Time In The Virtual Design Studio, Ruth Neubauer, Christoph H. Wecht Sep 2021

Materiality Of Space And Time In The Virtual Design Studio, Ruth Neubauer, Christoph H. Wecht

Learn X Design Conference Series

Digital structures as well as time can be described as crucial material affordances of the virtual design studio space. We question the notion that digital spaces are inherently immaterial and intangible. We challenge the concept of presence and flexibility in the context of the virtual space, and claim that digital infrastructures can be as materially inflexible as physical worlds. Simultaneously we argue for the potential of understanding virtual spaces beyond binary conceptions of presence/absence. We use concepts of practice and materiality to analyse virtual spaces as distributed spatiotemporal structures that can be designed to afford flexibility. We are interested in …

Float I;, Zihan Iris Li May 2020

Float I;, Zihan Iris Li

Masters Theses

The digital world is just another reality, alongside all the other parallel universes. It is similar to dreams, reflect- ing our fear and desire. When we are not conscious, the particles from our mind will travel freely and construct dreams. While in virtual space, digits are those wandering particles which form the world and are partially controlled by our minds. What is interesting is that no one in those realities will question the logic and behaviours, even though some of them are ridiculous, if you think carefully when you are awake in this physical world. We do find things go …

Altered States: Creative Arts, Virtual Reality, And The Human Condition, Sophia Gebara Jun 2019

Altered States: Creative Arts, Virtual Reality, And The Human Condition, Sophia Gebara

Honors Theses

Virtual reality (VR) is a medium that is cutting-edge and novel, creating fully immersive experiences for diverse audiences. Able to fabricate endless opportunities of hyper-realistic scenes, virtual reality provides a specific kind of space for self-reflection and empathy that no other medium can match. VR can take the viewer to the night of the shooting of Trayvon Martin, or next to families trying to survive the genocide in the Nuba mountains of Sudan, or even alongside a NASA scientists atop a sheet of ice in Greenland measuring the rising sea levels. This thesis explores the discourse and critical commentary surrounding …

Creative Micro-Entrepreneurship In Practice: Exploring Digital Tools For Small Creative Businesses, Olivia Messina Apr 2018

Creative Micro-Entrepreneurship In Practice: Exploring Digital Tools For Small Creative Businesses, Olivia Messina

Honors Scholar Theses

For the scope of this thesis, my focus is on independently owned businesses

run by “creative micro-entrepreneurs.” I’m using this term, coined by the digital

selling platform Etsy, to encompass artists, craftspeople, and others who sell artistic

goods and services they have made themselves. In addition to being part of this

community personally, I also think that it is important for these small businesses to

have the resources they need to thrive in our rapidly changing economy. Selling

online, clothing & accessories businesses, and cooking & baking businesses are

among the top 5 “side hustles” for Millennials, making creative small …
