Researching & Designing Marketing Materials For Rachel Messer & Connor Dale, Isabelle Bauer
Honors Projects
Isabelle Bauer’s Honors Project, “Researching and Designing Marketing Materials for Rachel Messer and Connor Dale” is split into two components. First, the research paper titled "The American West as a Cultural Phenomenon" explores the fascination with the American West and its integration into various aspects of American culture, particularly in music, film, and art. The essay discusses the historical significance of the West and its transformation into a cultural obsession. Focusing on the resurgence of Western aesthetics in modern country music, the project’s second component involves the creation of marketing materials for country artists Rachel Messer and Connor Dale.

Japanese Fashion Legacies, Emily C. Guerry, Patricia B. Metcalf
Belmont University Research Symposium (BURS)
Exploration of Japan's contributions to fashion is highlighted in our research presentation. Silhouettes, textiles, and accessories that originated in ancient Japanese culture are analyzed throughout their evolution. From these findings, a 10-piece capsule collection was made to bring these ideas further into the modern day. We displayed them from traditional to modern to highlight this evolution through the culture. Popular garments such as the Kimono were used as inspiration for details such as thick belts, ties, and wrap-style shirts. Additionally, the textile stitching technique, Sashiko, is a main source of inspiration in the collection. Sashiko started as a mending technique …

Biblical Literacy Among Millennial Christians, Benjamin Rivera Necochea
Biblical Literacy Among Millennial Christians, Benjamin Rivera Necochea
Masters Theses
The modern Christian has more access to scripture today than in any previous generation. The Bible can be accessed through mobile apps, computers, and the internet as well as by printed copies (Wycliffe.net). Yet, biblical literacy is declining at an alarming rate, especially among the millennial generation (Fulks 9). This thesis will examine why biblical disengagement is occurring and what implications it has on the faith of Christian millennials. To better understand the impact on this generation, research was conducted through a series of research questions: 1. What defines a millennial Christian? 2. Why are they actively leaving the church? …

Defining Her Future Conference Application, Michaela Stauber
Graphic Communication
The Women and Business club hosts the Defining Her Future Conference every year in order to empower young women and aid in their professional development. The conference has many opportunities for students to connect with professionals and learn from inspiring women but it does not currently have an application to enrich the experience. An application with all current conference information would minimize waste, provide conference information and logistics, and allow participants to network.
Giving Up Control: Hybrid Ai-Augmented Workflows For Image-Making, Joshua Vermillion
Giving Up Control: Hybrid Ai-Augmented Workflows For Image-Making, Joshua Vermillion
Tradition Innovations in Arts, Design, and Media Higher Education
This paper argues that if we are to come to creative terms with AI image-making then we must critically interrogate these new tools in the production of creative works. In doing so, designers can start to chart new creative workflows that integrate AI for image-making while augmenting and then evolving our current ways of designing. Workflows are shown that relate to how AI models can augment human creativity in hybrid (human and AI) creative endeavors while taking advantage of the affordances of these technologies.
More Than Human Empathy: A Caring Approach To Ecosystemic Design, Mariana Pestana
More Than Human Empathy: A Caring Approach To Ecosystemic Design, Mariana Pestana
IASDR Conference Series
This paper argues for a caring approach to design based on more-than-human empathy. It proposes that such an empathic turn can provide a useful framework for eco-systemic thinking and practice in design, because it takes into consideration the wellbeing and the rights of people but also that of non-human bodies. To do that, this paper reports on a study concerning the conception and delivery of a design Biennial, entirely created and experienced during the COVID-19 pandemic, which gathered thinkers, practitioners, researchers and community groups to collectively discuss, scrutinise and rehearse the role of design in a post-anthropocentric, more-than-human paradigm. For …

Digitally Fabricated Design Interventions For Als/Mnd, Yash Bohre, Rowan Page, Purba Joshi
IASDR Conference Series
Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), or motor neuron disease (MND), is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder that results in the loss of muscle control and function. To manage the daily activities of people with ALS, Assistive Technologies (ATs) are essential. However, many current ATs available in the market do not cater to the individualised and rapidly changing needs of people with ALS, and frequent procurement can take a financial toll on the family. This practice-based PhD project is developing custom-made ATs to maximise independence and enhance the quality of life of people with ALS. Through leveraging digital fabrication techniques, faster turnaround times …

IASDR Conference Series
The increasing population of older people worldwide has led to growth in the silver market. In response to this trend, various elderly care robots have emerged in recent years to provide physical assistance and support to the elderly. However, these robots are limited in their functions as they do not cater to the mental, emotional, and social needs of the elderly. Hence, this paper proposes the development of elderly care robots with personalities that can dynamically communicate with the elderly in uncertain situations throughout their lifetime, thus fulfilling their remaining needs. This research analyzed previous studies on social and elderly …

A Production Pipeline For An Ai-Powered Design Course, Gerry Derksen
IASDR Conference Series
We are entering a period of disruption in design which is up ending the process and in turn changing design education. By extension, the practice and profession will also be changed because of artificial intelligent (AI) tools which use machine learning (ML) technology. Current commercial versions of AI tools have already produced novel results sending a signal to design educators to consider the implications and future of design teaching. This paper introduces a new course being developed at our University in Graphic Communications to develop a pipeline which uses only online AI content generators to produce designs based on a …
Longing For: Exploring Intimacy And Sexual Expression In Long-Term Care Through Participatory Design Approaches, Yoni Maartje Lefévre
Longing For: Exploring Intimacy And Sexual Expression In Long-Term Care Through Participatory Design Approaches, Yoni Maartje Lefévre
IASDR Conference Series
Intimacy and sexual expression are often ignored and silenced in long-term care, failing to respect and protect the sexual health needs of older adults. Residents are often perceived as ‘too old’ to be sexually active due to the dominant youthful image ingrained in Western societies and media. As a result, people living in skilled nursing care experience a lack of intimate relationships, unable to explore their self-autonomy and sexuality. In addition, the acceptance of intimacy in an organizational work environment of a care facility depends on staffs attitudes, knowledge and policy guidelines. The multiple barriers to intimacy in long-term care …

Ai Costume Design Assignment, Kylie Mcdonald
Ai Costume Design Assignment, Kylie Mcdonald
AI Assignment Library
I used this rubric in class to go over the understanding of Chat GPT and how we can use it for costume design. I emphasized that Chat GPT is generated and not reliable in the search for knowledge but can be used to start the creative process. In my assignment, I have created two random picker wheels that the students use to get a character and a play. They use Chat GPT to give them the summary of the play they were randomly assigned using the voice of the character they were assigned. The goal of the assignment is to …
The Conversation, Minwoo Kim
Input / Output, Zach Scheinfeld
Input / Output, Zach Scheinfeld
Masters Theses
Input/Output emphasizes the processes and systems that create engagement, narrative, and meaning in graphic design, as opposed to singular inputs and outputs. In a series of experimental frameworks, ranging in form from 3D printed objects to browser-based painting tools, variables are put into the hands of the audience and user, creating conditions that are prime for retooling, repurposing, world-building, and play. Throughout, an open dialogue and feedback loop is formed between interface and user, author and reader, and teacher and student, where power, agency, and structure are in constant circulation, resulting in the emergence of unexpected forms, speculative technologies, and …
Craftivism And Cottonian Bindings: “The Handiwork Of Greta Hall”, Helen Williams
Craftivism And Cottonian Bindings: “The Handiwork Of Greta Hall”, Helen Williams
Criticism
Edith Southey, Edith May Southey, and Sara Coleridge Jr. covered Robert Southey’s books in vibrantly printed dress fabrics, creating a collection that came to be called “the Cottonian Library.” This article is a manifesto for Cottonian bookbinding to be studied as feminist literary activism. It argues for the importance of looking beyond the book trades to the domestic and unremunerated ways in which women contributed to Romantic period book design, suggesting that the new feminist Craftivism can prompt us to historicize and to acknowledge the significance of Cottonian bookbinding as a practice that cannot be omitted from any history of …

All Clear: A Workbook For Sexually Active Accutane Users Who Can Become Pregnant, Taylor Petersen
All Clear: A Workbook For Sexually Active Accutane Users Who Can Become Pregnant, Taylor Petersen
Honors Projects
Accutane is a pill-based derivative of Vitamin A used to treat cystic acne. The process to start and continue the medication each month is tedious and full of potential for error. This is especially true for female patients who are able to become pregnant as they have the additional step of monitoring and updating their birth control through an online portal. Patients are treated like numbers and there is little to no customization within Accutane treatment from patient to patient. To make this worse, reliable information about the drug is scarce and many turn to social media platforms or other …
Uni_Form Space: Exploring Environment Through Fashion+Architecture, Alanzo Price
Uni_Form Space: Exploring Environment Through Fashion+Architecture, Alanzo Price
Bachelor of Architecture Theses - 5th Year
Henry Van de Velde advocated for the German concept, ‘Gesamtkunstwerk’ which translates to ‘total work of art’. This concept became popular during the Art Nouveau Movement around the 1890s when architects began utilizing their knowledge of scale to design fashion and other everyday objects like silverware. Though this concept has produced intriguing designs, architects still shy away from design processes that seem ornamental assuming that they will not produce work that is ‘architectural’. The goal of this project is to create an architectural environment by curating designed elements that use a recognizable design language present in fashion and architecture. The …

Singing Planets Don't Sing; They Speak, Joanna R. Lauer
Singing Planets Don't Sing; They Speak, Joanna R. Lauer
Musical Offerings
Ancient Greek philosophers conceived a theory called Music of the Spheres. This ancient theory progressed for almost one thousand years before finally proving itself untrustworthy. However, this examination uncovers an overlooked fact: the large amount of natural order in sound and music existing before the creation of man. Scripture reveals that God is a God of order, and an extensive amount of natural order is found in the universe. Evidence points to God being the creator of the universe. Specific examples of such evidence are the inherent order of sound laid out in pitches, interval ratios, the overtone series, the …

I will also discuss folklore and the interpretation of nightmarish imagery in the context of an otherworldly adventure through a nightmare. These topics and themes will be shown, explained, and discussed through the methodology of my project- a …
Visual Development Of The Night Sky Circus, Rebeca Ortiz
Visual Development Of The Night Sky Circus, Rebeca Ortiz
Undergraduate Honors Theses
This creative thesis explores the process of visual development and how one can apply it to their own body of work. Visual Development encompasses the entire concept design process, from the idea to the final design. Vis Dev artists document their journey to depict how an idea becomes a fully refined and polished concept. They illustrate a wide variety of elements, such as characters, costuming, props, and environments. The development of all of these factors then allows the artist to cultivate an imaginative and creative world that could be used for multiple forms of entertainment, such as animated films, video …

Creating Character, Alexa Tenney
Honors Projects
This project explores the relationship between merchandise development and narrative development, with a specific focus on the creative development between dolls and animation. Through exploration of these creative mediums, I began to question: How does the creative process combining animation and merchandise develop, and what is the impact on the final product? This concept is broken down even further to focus specifically on characters, and how creative characters are developed for dolls. This project provides an overview of the history of animation and merchandising beginning with Felix the Cat in the 1920s. Felix represents an instance of an animated character …
