The Buffalo Soldiers, Kenneth Estes Hall

Kenneth Estes Hall

Excerpt: Despite the great success of the Civil War epic Glory, the story of the black troops during and after the War is not well known. This lack of exposure to popular familiarity is especially true of the Buffalo Soldiers who served on the frontier in the late 19th century, chiefly but not exclusively in the Indian Wars.

Hegemony, Nostalgia, And The Archive In Contemporary Civil War Literature.Docx, Dallin S. Earl

Dallin Earl

In 1990 approximately fourteen million people tuned in to watch Ken Burn’s eleven-hour publicly televised film The Civil War—more than the entire population of the Confederate states at the time of secession (Cullen 9). In the last two decades we have seen a resurgence of interest in the Civil War following a lull from 1965 into the mid 1980’s (Gallagher 4).    Recent interest in the Civil War indicates that we as a people are not finished talking about it, nor have its effects or consequences yet been fully teased out.America and Americans are very different since Civil …

Before Ptsd: Combat Trauma In The Civil War Short Stories Of Kate Chopin, Adam Kotlarczyk

Adam Kotlarczyk

“The Civil War,” writes Robert Penn Warren, “is, for the American imagination, the single greatest event of our history” (3). Indeed, it has been estimated that the American imagination has been inspired to the tune of some 60,000 historical books on the subject (Lafantasie). Kate Chopin, probably best known for The Awakening and short stories like “The Story of an Hour,” spent her adolescence in a divided and tumultuous St. Louis during the Civil War. Like the women in her family with whom she lived, including her mother, grandmother, and two aunts, young Kate was a southern sympathizer (Ewell 7). …

Political Disciple: The Relationship Between James A. Garfield And The Disciples Of Christ, Jerry Rushford

Jerry Rushford

James A. Garfield (1831-1881), the only preacher to ever occupy the White House, was a product of the profound social, intellectual and religious ferment of the early decades of the nineteenth century which produced the American religious movement known as the Disciples of Christ. The first fifty years of Disciple history closely paralleled Garfield’s life. The purpose of this study is to focus on the intimate Garfield-Disciples relationship, and to show its reciprocal nature. Garfield was helped by Disciples in the building of a political base (he won ten consecutive elections in the Western Reserve), and they in turn shared …

Introduction To We All Got History: The Memory Books Of Amos Webber, Nick Salvatore Mar 2013

Introduction To We All Got History: The Memory Books Of Amos Webber, Nick Salvatore

Nick Salvatore

[Excerpt] Who was this Amos Webber who assumed such a prominent role in this public, regional celebration of the black presence in American life? That he was a veteran was clear, but that alone did not account for his prominent position in that day's events. Certainly James Monroe Trotter, the eminent musician, author, and politician, William H. Carney, and William Dupree were all more widely known in the black North. How did a man such as Amos Webber, unknown beyond his own circle, the recipient of no awards or editorials in the local or national press, achieve such prominence in …
