C. William Pollard Papers

This speech was delivered at the 1997 fall seminar of the Evangelical Christian Publishing Association in Santa Fe, New Mexico. To remedy this situation the corporate leader must adopt a servant attitude, one that helps her prioritize the well-being of the people who make up any given institution.

The Sea Of Faith: After Dover Beach?, Vaughan S. Roberts Jun 1997

The Sea Of Faith: After Dover Beach?, Vaughan S. Roberts

Vaughan S Roberts

The metaphor of ‘the sea of faith’ comes from Matthew Arnold’s poem Dover Beach (1867) and has been explored subsequently by a number of theologians, notably Don Cupitt in his BBC TV series of the same name and the Sea of Faith Network founded to explore his ideas. This paper explores how the image of the sea functions in Arnold’s poem and his The Forsaken Merman before arguing that R. S. Thomas’s use of the sea in his poem Tidal provides a better theological metaphor than Arnold’s.

Does Protestant Fundamentalism Produce Traditional Views?: The Impact Of Religious Commitment Affiliation On Gender Role Beliefs And Political Ideology, Melissa Myers

Student Work

This research looks at the relationship between religious commitment/affiliation and traditional beliefs. Data from the 1993 General Social Survey is used to test hypotheses linking religious commitment and religious affiliation to traditional gender role beliefs and conservative political views. Findings show statistical significance but weak substantive support for the idea that fundamentalists hold more traditional gender role beliefs and political ideology. Future research linking these attitudes to the actual behaviors of men and women in fundamentalist religions is proposed.

Some Shattering Simplicity: Suffering, Love, And Faith In The Thought Of C.S. Lewis, Jennifer Woodruff

Inklings Forever: Published Colloquium Proceedings 1997-2016

A repeated theme in the works of C.S. Lewis is the tension inherent in why and how we believe and accept Christianity. Christianity makes sense of reality, but at the same time shatters all our expectations of reality. Examining Lewis’s writings about the nature of suffering, faith, and love we learn how this is not a contradiction but a shattering simplicity that reveals the truth about reality.

The Apologetics Of Chesterton And Lewis In A World Marked By Disbelief, Michael R. Smith

Inklings Forever: Published Colloquium Proceedings 1997-2016

In an age characterized by meaninglessness and relativeness, arguments once thought to be timeless are challenged by a postmodernism world view that evaluates all ideas as equal and flawed just the same. G.K Chesterton and C.S. Lewis are two sources of authority regularly referenced by current apologists, and provide a variety of logically sound arguments for Christianity.

George Macdonald's Answer To The Victorian Crises Of Faith, Pamela Jordan

Inklings Forever: Published Colloquium Proceedings 1997-2016

Due to the advances in science and new philosophies, the people of the Victorian era faced a crisis of faith and its place in a new scientific era. This approach is particularly evident in his novel Thomas Wingfold, Curate.
