Medicine's Roots: Through The Banyan Trees, Emily E. Klosterman
Medicine's Roots: Through The Banyan Trees, Emily E. Klosterman
HCA Healthcare Journal of Medicine
I started residency before the COVID-19 pandemic, at a time when we were able to see our patient’s faces without masks, give reassuring smiles, and sit closely while discussing a difficult diagnosis. Little did I know that in 2019, the way we practice would change overnight, as an unprecedented virus took hold. We could no longer see our patients’ faces, reassuring smiles were hidden by masks, and close conversations were held at a distance. Our homes became our claustrophobic havens, and the hospitals were saturated with patients.
Driven by a deep-rooted need to assist others, we continued onward. As life …
Loving Nature, Praising The Creator; The Visualizations Of The Natural World In The Islamic Magazine Pandji Masjarakat, Muhammad Yuanda Zara
Loving Nature, Praising The Creator; The Visualizations Of The Natural World In The Islamic Magazine Pandji Masjarakat, Muhammad Yuanda Zara
Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia
This study examines previously unexplored visual representations of the natural world published in Pandji Masjarakat magazine in 1960. Known at the time as the most popular Islamic magazine in Indonesia, this publication not only discussed Islamic teachings as hitherto understood, but also provided ample space for the publication of drawings, paintings, and photographs of the natural world. This study argues that the visualizations of the natural world in Pandji Masjarakat were aimed at providing its Muslim readers all over Indonesia and in the wider Malay world with guidance on how to see the natural world and people’s place in it …

The Right To Transparency And The Right To Opacity: The Works Of Safaa Mazirh And Alia Ali, Katherine Vines
The Right To Transparency And The Right To Opacity: The Works Of Safaa Mazirh And Alia Ali, Katherine Vines
Theses
This research focuses on a study of the photographic works of two contemporary female photographers from the MENA region: Alia Ali and Safaa Mazirh. Rather than trying to define art in the region and its diasporas, this research stresses the distinctiveness of two artists' specific experiences in relation to gender, religion, tradition, and modernity. A common thread is the constant navigation between the artists’ lived experiences of their postcolonial reality and collective memories of the colonial past. When comparing these artists, I argue that viewing their works in conjunction highlights the principle of “the right to opacity” as discussed by …
Introduction To Confronting Teacher Preparation Epistemicide: Art, Poetry, And Teacher Resistance, Richard D. Sawyer, Daniel Ness
Introduction To Confronting Teacher Preparation Epistemicide: Art, Poetry, And Teacher Resistance, Richard D. Sawyer, Daniel Ness
Northwest Journal of Teacher Education
In this special issue, we present different perspectives from a documentary project on curricular epistemicide. We view curriculum epistemicide —the annihilation of curriculum—as an embodied process. It limits ways of knowing, questioning, and envisioning the world, and it constricts multiplicity and erases identity and culture. Authors within this volume responded to two requests: 1) they examined some form of epistemicide; and 2) they did not reinforce current systems of power and inequity. Throughout the issue, poetry and photography weave through theoretical papers and empirical studies. A range of methodologies are considered within the articles.
