Lyric Opera of Chicago was an important venue for Jussi Björling in the last half-decade of his career. Between 1955 and 1958 he sang 31 performances there in nine of his most famous roles. Of these, Il trovatore was the most frequent. He appeared in this opera nine times over three of his four Chicago seasons.

Theater Of The Oppressed And Labor Organizing: Possibilities And Limitations, Jasmin Cardenas

A reflective essay to document the use of Theater of the Oppressed (TO) for labor organizing with a workers rights group in the Chicago area. Participants were working people from across Chicago’s Latinx immigrant community and previously incarcerated returning citizens, mainly temporary staffing workers who had never performed before. This essay attempts to document the collaboration between an independent artist and an organization and highlight some limitations and possibilities of using TO for labor organizing.

The response to the AIDS epidemic in Chicago shows continuity with the national trend of fighting ignorance. In the 1980s, Chicago emerged as a hotspot of gay life, positioned between watershed moments in New York and San Francisco, crafting an opportunity to forge a powerful, accepting community within the city through community responsiveness, educational initiatives and political activism. Environmental Racism In Historical Context: The Robbins Incinerator Debate, 1980s-1990s, Brian Reyes

The Yale Undergraduate Research Journal

Conventional narratives of environmental racism paint a “perpetrator-victim” scenario, in which an environmental hazard is forced upon a powerless nonwhite community. This is not always the case. In 1988, a deal was struck to locate an incinerator in an all-Black suburb of Chicago called Robbins. The debate over the Robbins incinerator, which lasted nearly a decade, emerged as a particularly notable incident of environmental racism because of the willingness of Robbins’ Black leadership and residents to accept the plan.
