Picking Up Steam: The Role Of Languages And Linguistics, Keith Mason
The STEAM Journal
Languages and linguistics are powerful skills that enhance STEAM curricula and careers. A variety of approaches and methods to language teaching and learning inform educators how to proceed with the enhancement of STEAM programs. Linguistics, the science of language, can help STEAM students, especially within the science and mathematics components, because of its reliance on hypothesis formulation for scientific inquiry and data collection and analysis. Language, an important aspect of the human experience, elevates or picks up the STEAM experience.

Philology Matters
This article focuses on the linguistic features of media text. The transformation of the media space, which is currently taking place as a result of the rapid development of communication technologies, promotes the appeal of scientists and researchers to study the media and mass communications, the information space in the context of modern culture. New approaches to the language of the media are not only related to the general tendencies in the development of world linguistics. The changing tasks of the media, the processes of transition taking place in society also have a direct impact on this. This makes it …

Study On Gender Biased Language Usage In Spanish Secondary Learning Regulations, Manuel A. Bejarano Bache
UBT International Conference
Currently, Society past mistakes about gender discrimination are being recognized. Social and civic strife are achieving to take out barriers, pre-established by means of hard pressure and control from male chauvinism. One of these barriers is that which is set through non-inclusive and sexist language, frequently biasing the message to the masculine sector, neglecting or keeping women down or on invisibility. This language is widely used and we can see it nowadays in official administrative documents. In spite of to-the-change tendency which is important and realizable, and the hard efforts which are being carried out, incomplete attempts to carry out …

Autoethnography Of Laughter: Transforming Identity By Teaching Composition And Linguistics Through Humor, Olya Cochran
Theses and Dissertations
The following dissertation is a story composed of humorous and humor-related experiences, lived by me as an immigrant student and instructor. I reflect on how those experiences influenced the transformation and performance of my teaching identity and shaped my humor-based pedagogy for Composition and Introductory Linguistics courses. The work is considering the effects of humor on my linguistic and cultural competences as well as my teaching practice. Along with that, the work provides an overview of scholarship on humor in education and the ways practicing academics utilize humor in their teaching and teaching identities. To reflect on how and why …

Linguistic Status Of Address: Address As A Syntactic Unit, Zebo Yovkacheva Phd Student
Philology Matters
This article discusses the linguistic aspect of address. The syntactic category of address attracted the attention of Russian linguists for a long time. The object of their study was address, the natural condition for the existence of which was oral and written forms of dialogical speech. A multilateral analysis of the essence and functioning of circulation in the Russian language was first presented in the works of A.A. Shakhmatova and A.M. Peshkovsky. In modern syntactic works and academic grammars, the methods of expression and distribution of addresses in oral and written dialogical speech, their bridges in the utterance, the nature …

Cross-Language Phonetic Interference In Learning The Arabic Language, Yulduz Ismailova
The Light of Islam
Structural changes in the system of higher education in our country require an increase in the role and improvement of the methodology of teaching students foreign languages. As we know, at one of the first stages in teaching Arabic pronunciation, students and teachers are faced with a phenomenon such as linguistic or interlanguage interference. As a result, some characteristic errors appear in the students ’speech, which impedes the formation of certain skills and abilities for the correct articulation of difficult-to-pronounce phonemes. The proposed article is devoted to the study of this phenomenon and the causes of its occurrence. Also, the …

The Language Of The Draughtsboard Sharks: A Conlang Project, Trent Garlin
The Language Of The Draughtsboard Sharks: A Conlang Project, Trent Garlin
English Department: Linguistics ENG 334
The language of the draughtsboard sharks is a fictional conlang. This paper describes the history, physical anatomy, means of articulation, morphology, syntax, and grammar of the language through the entirely fictional lens of a research team studying shark communication in New Zealand. Notable aspects of the conlang are its portrayal of imaginary, non-human speech organs created to eliminate a shark’s realistic inability to speak, as well as the absence of a written element to the language largely due to the lack of opposable thumbs (or fingers at all) on sharks. The language also includes IPA charts for both consonants and …

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This master’s thesis is a discourse analysis of a traditional Lakota story, " Iktó na wičhá ha kiŋ”, or “Ikto and the Racoon Skin”, one of the 64 stories included in the “Dakota Texts”, which were collected by Ella Deloria at three Lakota reservations in 1930s as a part of Franz Boas’ language documentation project. The thesis is also an attempt to examine different communicative strategies employed within the narrative and their relationship to culture, as well as the relationship between form and the transfer of meaning and culture and meaning. The analysis is conducted using Dell Hymes’ ethnographic approach …
From “Linguistic Turn” And Hebrews Scholarship To Anadiplosis Iterata: The Enigma Of A Structure, Gabriella Gelardini
From “Linguistic Turn” And Hebrews Scholarship To Anadiplosis Iterata: The Enigma Of A Structure, Gabriella Gelardini
BYU Studies Quarterly
In 1963, when the “linguistic turn” had evidently taken hold of New Testament studies, Albert Vanhoye, a linguistically trained Catholic priest, published a monograph entitled La structure littéraire de l’épître aux Hébreux.1 The manifold reactions to his refined literary-rhetorical approach and conclusions in favor of a concentric structure oscillated between euphoric approval and offensive disapproval. Along with its translation into German (1979/1980) and a decade later into English (1989), Vanhoye’s study influenced and stimulated Hebrews scholarship like none other in the twentieth century.

Mangummangaaraa; The Search Of Inao’S Origin In Thailand, Titima Suthiwan
Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia
In 2017, as an acknowledgement of their extreme popularity in Southeast Asian countries, including Thailand, manuscripts of Panji tales were recommended for inclusion in the UNESCO Memory of the World Register. This paper will discuss the scope and extent of this popularity, its influence on both Thai classical culture and pop culture, plus a record of the search for its point of entry and manner of introduction into Thai culture. Even though such a search is not as seemingly impossible as Panji’s searches for his fiancée, namely: mangummangaaraa, there are still several gaps to fill in. In particular, this paper …

Some Problems Of Uzbek Lexicography And Dictionary Elaboration, Lolaxon Nigmatova An Associate Professor, Phd
Philology Matters
The article provides an indepth analysis of the lexicographical functions, the principles of explaining obsolete language units to linguists, and the experience of Uzbek lexicography. Lexicography and vocabulary are inextricably linked to all sections of linguistics, in particular lexicology. In this sense, these three sections represent three stages in the disciplines: fundamental; innovative field; explaination to describe the practical area; tasks for practical lexicography. General typology of dictionaries and development of new dictionaries; to create a common dictionary structure (word choice, word and dictionary articles, definition, synonyms, polyphonic and polysemantic units, to include reference materials in the dictionary); the process …

Translation And Translanguaging Pedagogies In Intercomprehension And Multilingual Teaching, Cedric Joseph Oliva, Clorinda Donato, Francesca Ricciardelli
Modern Languages Faculty Journal Articles
Since 2007, California State University, Long Beach has developed and offered courses that highlight students’ pre-existing linguistic repertoires in English and in the Romance languages. These courses are unique in that they build upon a multilingual base for the acquisition of new languages through the method of intercomprehension. As an approach that moves among languages, Intercomprehension places learners in conditions that are conducive to translanguaging and translation. This paper discusses the role of translation and translanguaging in Intercomprehension as a pedagogical approach in these courses. Since our students are constantly moving between English and one or more Romance language(s), they …
Cockney Dialect Group Report, Trent Garlin
Cockney Dialect Group Report, Trent Garlin
English Department: Linguistics ENG 334
When many people think of a British accent two distinct types typically come to mind, an overly posh royal family type accent, or an Oliver Twist Cockney accent. However, the Cockney dialect is a lot more complicated and interesting than simply dropping the ‘h’ and ‘t’ from the English language, and this report will explore the history of the dialect as well as the phonology, the morphology and its syntax.

Research outputs 2014 to 2021
Our research team was asked to consider the relationship of the neuroscience of sensorimotor control to the language of emotions and feelings. Actions are the principal means for the communication of emotions and feelings in both humans and other animals, and the allostatic mechanisms controlling action also apply to the regulation of emotional states by the self and others. We consider how motor control of hierarchically organised, feedback-based, goal-directed action has evolved in humans, within a context of consciousness, appraisal and cultural learning, to serve emotions and feelings. In our linguistic analysis, we found that many emotion and feelings words …
The Mothman And Other Strange Tales: Shaping Queer Appalachia Through Folkloric Discourse In Online Social Media Communities, Brenton Watts
The Mothman And Other Strange Tales: Shaping Queer Appalachia Through Folkloric Discourse In Online Social Media Communities, Brenton Watts
Theses and Dissertations--Linguistics
Little work has been conducted on the intersections of queer and Appalachian identities, in part because these two identities are viewed as incompatible (Mann 2016). This study uses a multimodal critical discourse analytic approach to examine the Instagram posts of the Queer Appalachia Project, which represent a substantial body of discourse created by and for queer Appalachians. Of specific interest to this analysis are those posts which employ folkloric figures, such as West Virginia’s Mothman, to do identity work that is queer, Appalachian, and queer-Appalachian. Often, this act is accomplished through juxtaposition with Appalachian imagery and the reclamation of homophobic …
