Reflecting On My Adventures In Experiential Learning, Will Sharpe
Reflecting On My Adventures In Experiential Learning, Will Sharpe
SASAH 4th Year Capstone and Other Projects: Publications
This report analyzes and reflects on my experiential learning experiences with the Forest City Film Festival and Western Libraries. I look back at my initial feelings of bewilderment and imposter syndrome and then track my progress as I’m pushed out of my comfort zone and learn the skills I need to excel. My time with the Forest City Film Festival and Western Libraries, as well as my peers’ testimonies, taught me that at SASAH, we all have the skills needed to succeed in our fields — and the experiential learning program is an excellent place to nurture them.
Is Media Assistance Obsolete? A Practice-Based Perspective On The Potential For Digital Technologies To Achieve Media Development Goals In Sub-Saharan Africa, Daire Higgins
Doctoral
The area of media assistance is not a widely known part of the Development Aid sector, even though it has been in existence since after World War II and has grown significantly since then as part of the development agenda. Media Assistance has been included in the strategies of Western and non Western donors as part of their overseas Aid programmes in many regions, supporting journalism and media with the objectives of contributing to accountability, transparency, governance and ultimately, democracy. This thesis examines the impact on the Media Assistance sector of the arrival of digital technologies into the ‘information ecosystems’ …

“What For Is Democracy?”: The German American Bund In The American Press, 1936-1941, Minna Thrall
“What For Is Democracy?”: The German American Bund In The American Press, 1936-1941, Minna Thrall
Voces Novae
Between 1936 and 1941, an American pro-Nazi organization called the German American Bund stirred outrage and controversy among Americans. The American perception of the Bund was largely influenced by newspapers, which portrayed some of the Bund’s issues as more important than others. These portrayals reveal American attitudes and anxieties toward the state of racism, nationalism, fascism, and democracy within the United States at the brink of WWII.

After discovering photography in 2018 and dedicating the past year of my life to this passion I want to turn it into a career. This paper looks into the necessary research it takes to start a photography business. After carefully conducting the research, I created a business proposal appropriate to our current pandemic situation. I looked at different ways COVID-19 will affect my desired profession and the events and music industry in which I hope to work. After thoroughly familiarizing myself with these industries, I was able to discern that a career in photography is possible if I market myself, …
Jumping From Journalism -- Why Broadcast Journalists Leave The Field, Daniel Mark Woodruff
Jumping From Journalism -- Why Broadcast Journalists Leave The Field, Daniel Mark Woodruff
Theses and Dissertations
Journalism plays an important role in our society. But what happens when a journalist decides to pursue a new profession? The loss of a journalist from a newsroom can have a significant impact, particularly when that journalist takes with them institutional knowledge and a history of the market. This study uses qualitative interviews with 12 former broadcast journalists to investigate what factors cause them to leave the field and what the implications are for the industry. Relying on burnout theory as a framework, this study reveals three key reasons broadcast journalists decided to walk away. First, they faced increasing demands …

The Red Swimsuit: Essays, Jacqueline Knirnschild
Honors Theses
This thesis is a collection of creative non-fiction essays that offers a collage of ethnography, reportage and memoir. The Red Swimsuit blurs the lines between what is considered social science, journalism and art. The Red Swimsuit provides first-hand experience, reflexive narration, and reflection on life as a member of Generation Z, also known as iGen.
Female Leaders Navigate The Arts, Post 'Me Too', Peyton Kennedy
Female Leaders Navigate The Arts, Post 'Me Too', Peyton Kennedy
Senior Honors Projects, 2020-current
As the lights dim and the curtain rises on a theatrical production, there are roles to fill onstage and off. Perhaps the most important roles in modern theatre are those of leadership. Leaders in the arts have the power to influence company communication, shape the culture of the rehearsal room and navigate through a crisis. However, leadership and power can be manipulated, as the world witnessed through the ‘me too’ movement. As allegations rose against prominent leaders, the push for change strengthened. We are now three years past Hollywood’s ignition of the ‘me too’ movement, which prompts the question: have …

Twenty-Seven Questions For Writers & Journalists To Consider When Writing About Covid-19 & Hiv/Aids, Alexandra Juhasz, Pato Hebert, Theodore Kerr, Diana Cage
Publications and Research
The desire to compare COVID-19 and HIV/AIDS is understandable. The response to HIV provides an inspiring road map for how to save lives. For over four decades, starting in the early 1980s, activists, scientists, politicians and cultural producers have been working alongside one another resulting in life saving developments—and goals not yet achieved. Since the late 1990s, HIV has become a manageable chronic illness for those with access to life saving medicine, housing, food, and social support. Meanwhile, stigma, discrimination, and criminalization directed at people living with HIV continue, based on social difference, access to resources and community, and an …
The Patriot Journalist: An Examination Of The Work Of Wisconsin's Dickey Chapelle, Dee Ann Holzel
The Patriot Journalist: An Examination Of The Work Of Wisconsin's Dickey Chapelle, Dee Ann Holzel
Theses and Dissertations
Wisconsin journalist Dickey Chapelle is primarily remembered as the first female journalist from the U.S. killed while covering combat. She died while on patrol with the Marines on Nov. 4, 1965 in South Vietnam. Chapelle was repeatedly in Vietnam to cover the war from 1961-1965, but the resulting articles were rarely published. In fact, only three articles from her trips to Laos and Vietnam were published in any major magazine. The evidence demonstrates Chapelle believed her difficulties in finding publishers was the result of gender discrimination. However, Chapelle had no formal education and no training for the work required of …

"The Hoof" Satire Column: Humorous Critiques For Student News Engagement, Hannah M. Benson

The following study investigates how to develop and maintain a satire column within a university newspaper in order to increase news-related engagement within a student body. The changes within the media are growing exponentially and the California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo (Cal Poly) student who developed “The Hoof” saw the need for satirical content created by students, for students. The column’s focus was to create and publish entertaining and informative articles concerning Cal Poly-related issues. With scholarly research, the intent of the column aims to mimic the style of well-known satirists and follow the principles of public journalism, …

Honors College Portfolios
This portfolio is a compilation of my written and published work during my time as a Duquesne student, whether completed in class or for an internship. My portfolio, filled with articles focusing on a wide range of genres and topics, offers a glimpse into the life of a journalist, as well as the media field in general.
While it is essential for a journalism student to study the laws, ethics, theories and concepts behind journalism, its importance and its history, we must also go out into the world and report. How can one become a successful journalist without actually reporting …

America's Last Great Newspaper War [Table Of Contents], Mike Jaccarino
Cinema & Media Studies
A from-the-trenches view of New York Daily News and New York Post runners and photographers who would stop at nothing to break the story and squash their tabloid arch rivals.
When author Mike Jaccarino was offered a job at the Daily News in 2006, he was asked a single question: “Kid, what are you going to do to help us beat the Post?” That was the year things went sideways at the News, when The New York Post surpassed its nemesis in circulation for the first time in the history of both papers. Tasked with one job—crush the …

Complex Ecologies And Unruly Bodies In Rosa Montero’S Speculative Fiction, Kiersty Lemon-Rogers
Complex Ecologies And Unruly Bodies In Rosa Montero’S Speculative Fiction, Kiersty Lemon-Rogers
Theses and Dissertations--Hispanic Studies
Rosa Montero’s work stands out for its compassionate and rich view of humanity. My study is a comparative analysis of Montero’s six Speculative Fiction (SF) novels and four volumes of her collected columns, selected for the proximity of their publication to the SF novels. Montero expresses her ethos directly through her weekly columns in El País and through her novels, which have the potential to attract a different readership than her journalism. Her SF novels, in particular, allow Montero to address contemporary problems in settings that allow readers to suspend their disbelief and connect with her narrative, rather than rejecting …

This long-form journalistic story and photo essay is about the Blackfoot Tribes in the United States and Canada and their efforts to restore bison to their land, their diet, and their culture. In 2014, ten tribes from the United States and Canada came together at Blackfeet Nation in Browning, Montana to sign the Buffalo Treaty, a commitment to bringing wild buffalo back to parts of their historical range. The Treaty signing marked the first time in more than 150 years that a diverse group of tribes, some historical enemies, came together in the name of restoring the animal they evolved …
