DePaul's College of Computing and Digital Media has several programs that engage students in enjoyable and educational endeavors that build their skill sets, confidence, and connections. The School of Cinematic Arts has partnered for several years with the Chicago Housing Authority (CHA) on a program that pays youth residents of CHA housing to participate in documentary filmmaking, screenwriting and design. DeSports involves students at two Chicago Public Schools (CPS) in e-sports to develop collaboration, communication and critical-thinking skills. Middle-school girls in CPS participate STEM-oriented pursuits as part of Digital Youth Divas.

To give the DePaul community a behind the scenes look at this year’s event is its producers, Tony Peluso and Jamie Davis. On this episode, they talk about the challenges they faced due to COVID-19, explain how DePaul’s campus was used to help tell the story of Jesus’ birth and share how DePaul’s students were involved in creating this year’s event, in front of and behind the camera.

Disassembly: A Pantoum Written By Depaul Students On The Fight For Racial Equity

Nine students in Chris Green's English class wrote a pantoum, "Disassembly," which advocates for the Black Lives Matter movement and chooses to celebrate difference by collaborative means. The pantoum was turned into a video and posted to YouTube.

With the pandemic prohibiting in-person learning and campus visits, the college offered an assortment of creative online offerings this summer to give newly admitted DePaul students a taste of the LAS experience. Among the offerings were a mini-course, "Critical Perspectives on Our Current Moment," taught using Zoom, an introduction to the Center for Black Diaspora and the Center for Latino Research, and panel discussions with current students and faculty in the Honors program.

DePaul continues to expand its innovative programming and resources for Latinx communities. La DePaulia, an online Spanish-language publication produced by journalism students, is filling a need for news in Chicago's Spanish-speaking community. The Center for Latino Research continues to provide films, lectures, webinars and other programming on Latinx subjects, and is elevating its scholarly publication, Diálogo with expanded content and regional relevance. The DePaul Art Museum has initiated a years-long Latinx Initiative to expand its collections, exhibitions and public programs devoted to Latin American artists, beginning with the "LatinXAmerican" exhibition.

The course delves into everything from the story of the Beatles’ against the social, historical and political context of the time to their songwriting, musical practices and recording innovations. This thesis considers the relationship between representations of the Frankenstein’s Monster on film and the transsexual identity to argue that they can be ontologically consolidated into the figure of the Monstrous transsexual: a constructed, hybrid being whose uncategorizability within conventionally rigid structures of sex and intolerable embodiment of incongrous “parts” renders them as simultaneously powerful with radical potential and vulnerable from ostracization, oppression, and hostility. By analyzing both Frankenstein films from the post-war era of 1945-1975 and the power dynamics of the gender clinics in which the modern understanding of transsexuality was established, this thesis demonstrates the ways in which …

Pathways To The Native Storyteller: A Method To Enable Computational Story Understanding, Aramide O. Kehinde

The primary objective of this thesis is to develop a method that uses machine learning algorithms to enable computational story understanding. This research is conducted with the aim of establishing a system called the Native Storyteller that plans and creates storytelling experiences for human users. The paper first establishes the desired capabilities of the system and then deep dives into how to enable story understanding, which is the core ability the system needs to function. International students are a growing presence on college campuses across the United States. However, despite their increased numbers on college campuses, they have been overlooked in analyses regarding subgroups and sexual violence prevention. This qualitative, phenomenological study sought to describe the lived experiences of East Asian international students as they travel to the United States and learn about sexual violence. Interviews were conducted with eight East Asian international students studying at a public university in the Midwest. Sister Helen Prejean has dedicated her life to opposing the death penalty after she witnessed an execution in her home state of Louisiana. Her efforts have sparked a national dialogue on capital punishment and she has helped shape the Catholic Church’s position on the topic. In 2011, she donated her personal archives to the university to help the DePaul community continue to learn from her work. This thesis canonizes “Tumblr poetry” as a distinct and separate genre of poetry, closely related to other digital poetry movements but ultimately its own phenomenon. Through historical analysis, the criticism against Tumblr poetry and digital poetry as a whole become familiar in a cycle of negative reactions to changing poets and changing audiences. Through textual analysis of poems found on Tumblr, common attributes and style changes are identified and contrasted with more traditional contemporary poetry, signifying a distinct formal shift. My dissertation explores the process of becoming a feminist educator as I transitioned to using feminist theory in my pedagogy for the first time. Inspired by political events and my own progression from conservative musician to progressive educator, I asked the question in my research, “What would a feminist pedagogy look like in my music history classroom?” I used self-study research, with a design based on autoethnography and autobiography, to conduct a study that took place over a ten-week term. LETTER FROM THE DEAN

As I write this letter wrapping up the 2019-20 academic year, we remain in a global pandemic that has profoundly altered our lives. While many things have changed, some stayed the same: our CDM community worked hard, showed up for one another, and continued to advance their respective fields. A year that began like many others changed swiftly on March 11th when the University announced that spring classes would run remotely.
