War Of The Moon, Bibiana Medkova
War Of The Moon, Bibiana Medkova
Masters Theses
Space, in the post-World War context, was the new frontier of ‘global’ dominion. Space Race of the 1950s was a competition to signal technological capability and military strength. The objective of War of the Moon is to unpack the motivation for Moon race in 1950s. What did countries have to gain politically, economically, socially and technologically by conquering space and landing on the moon. At what cost? Who financed it, and where did the labor, land, and raw materials sourced come from. And how it was used to accomplish said landing. Space security is a massive aspect of all current …
Influence And Innovation: Beethoven's Impact On The Sonatas For Piano And Cello By Mendelssohn And Chopin, Patrick T. Bellah
Influence And Innovation: Beethoven's Impact On The Sonatas For Piano And Cello By Mendelssohn And Chopin, Patrick T. Bellah
Dissertations, 2020-current
The bulk of the scholarship in this paper centers around Beethoven’s five sonatas written for piano and cello and how he established a new normal within the genre. This is evidenced by what are arguably the two most noteworthy sonatas for the same instrumental medium, written by Mendelssohn and Chopin, following Beethoven’s death. I posit that the five sonatas written by Beethoven establish a series of models upon which the latter two works by his successors are based.
Chapters two and three of this document are separated into subsections that detail the plausibility of Beethoven’s influence through circumstantial evidence, musical …
No More Funeral Marches: How An Orchestra Conductor Is Using Music To Heal His City, Carolyn Brown
No More Funeral Marches: How An Orchestra Conductor Is Using Music To Heal His City, Carolyn Brown
Capstones
In the wake of the Breonna Taylor grand jury decision, the city of Louisville became, as Louisville Orchestra conductor Teddy Abrams put it, "the epicenter of journalism." Abrams, the youngest conductor of a major orchestra in the United States, has hundreds of thousands of fans across the country. He's also an ardent political activist. By making the Orchestra's 2020 season virtual, diversifying their featured composers and works, and providing free one-on-one "comfort concerts" over Zoom, Abrams has been working to make the traditionally White space of classical music more inclusive, safe, and accessible. https://www.cebrownphoto.com/no-more-funeral-marches

Exploring Authenticity In Old-Time Music, Mikaela Langley
Exploring Authenticity In Old-Time Music, Mikaela Langley
Undergraduate Honors Theses
This thesis focuses on the question of authenticity in old-time music, and the ways in which it is studied in ETSU’s Bluegrass, Old-Time, and Country Music Studies program. In an academic setting, old-time is often studied in more of a historical or anthropological context and less as a specific style of music. Arguments for authenticity in this music have been made since the popularity of such films as “O Brother, Where Art Thou?” and “Cold Mountain”, which brought a lot of outside attention to the genres of bluegrass and old-time music, as well as defining the aesthetics associated with them. …
Developing A Systematic Approach For Teaching Beginning Improvisation Using The Concert Percussion Ensemble, Ian Mcclaflin
Developing A Systematic Approach For Teaching Beginning Improvisation Using The Concert Percussion Ensemble, Ian Mcclaflin
Dissertations
Typically, when studying percussion at a University, a student is required to be proficient at multiple aspects of percussion (snare drum, mallet keyboards, drum set, hand drumming, etc.) and work through multiple method books and solos on the different instruments. This often leaves little to no room for the study of improvisation on their instrument.
Examined in this study are the following points pertaining to the state of teaching improvisation:
- There is an apparent lack of improvisation in the classroom
- Teachers often feel unprepared in teaching improvisation
- Improvisation is most commonly associated with jazz
- Both teachers and students tend to …
Editing The Double Bass Concerto Of Antonio Scontrino, Roberto Pineda
Editing The Double Bass Concerto Of Antonio Scontrino, Roberto Pineda
Dissertations
Antonio Scontrino (1850-1922) was an important Italian Romantic composer, virtuoso double bassist, and respected pedagogue who is relatively unknown outside of the Italian musical community. His compositional output is prolific and includes string quartets, operas, symphonies, concerti, solo pieces, songs, and religious works. Indeed, Scontrino was a compelling composer who deserves more attention from the international musical community. In addition to his compositional expertise, he was an artful double bass performer whose works for the instrument, while distinctly idiomatic, are compositions of high quality.
This dissertation provides a description of the composer’s life and the events that transpired around Scontrino …

See It And Believe It: An Investigation Into Singers' Imagery Use, Brianna Desantis
See It And Believe It: An Investigation Into Singers' Imagery Use, Brianna Desantis
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Sport and dance psychology researchers have shown, time and again, how imagery improves performance in their respective fields. In singing, imagery has a long history in the bel canto (beautiful singing) tradition but it is more linked to using metaphor and simile as teaching aids rather than a mental practice technique to improve performance. Because of this, imagery in singing is even broader than imagery in athletics or dance. Moreover, imagery in singing psychology has not been as thoroughly examined in an empirical setting, especially not from a sport and dance psychology perspective.
This monograph aims to outline the term …

Electronic Learning: An Educator’S Guide To Navigating Online Learning In A Collegiate Horn Studio, Michelle Beck
Theses and Dissertations
Inarguably one of the most abrupt changes our education system has seen in the last 50 years, online learning has swept the country. To protect both the health and safety of its citizens, the country has shifted to an online format. With this change comes opportunity for growth and advancement of online learning curriculum. At the same time, this quick move has led many educators through an uncomfortable reassessment of teaching practice and pedagogical approach. In this document I will examine the many aspects of e-learning. E-learning is defined as “utilizing electronic technologies to access educational curriculum outside of a …

The Search For Canadian Art Song: Developing The Framework For A Database Of Art Song By Canadian Composers, Leanne Vida
The Search For Canadian Art Song: Developing The Framework For A Database Of Art Song By Canadian Composers, Leanne Vida
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Art song is a diverse, inclusive genre of music, as well as an important pedagogical tool for singers. It can be performed in the smallest of spaces, but it is also able to hold its own in the largest concert halls. It requires only a few musicians, making it an ideal choice for a concert or recital setting, and its poetic content describes virtually every aspect of life, in many languages, making it accessible to a broad audience. Many of its works require less physical maturity on the part of singers and require less rigorous technical ability than larger concert …
Mashing Through The Conventions: Convergence Of Popular And Classical Music In The Works Of The Piano Guys, Alina Kiryayeva
Mashing Through The Conventions: Convergence Of Popular And Classical Music In The Works Of The Piano Guys, Alina Kiryayeva
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This dissertation is dedicated to examining the symbiosis between popular music and Western classical music in classical/popular mashups––a new style within the classical crossover genre. The research features the works of The Piano Guys, a contemporary ensemble that combines classical crossover characteristics and the techniques from modern sample-based styles to reconceptualize and reuse classical and popular works. This fusion demonstrates a new approach to presenting multi-genre works, forming a separate musical and cultural niche for this creative practice.
This dissertation consists of three chapters. The first chapter is further divided into two thematic discourses: genre and authorship. The research draws …
The Modes Of Intervention In Alvin Lucier’S I Am Sitting In A Room, Daniel Fox
The Modes Of Intervention In Alvin Lucier’S I Am Sitting In A Room, Daniel Fox
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Alvin Lucier’s I am sitting in a room (1969) is an icon of experimental music and sound art. The sizable literature addressing the aesthetic and philosophical implications of this piece rarely discusses the performance practice beyond what is indicated in the score itself. This is problematic for two reasons: 1) The meaning that is derived from the piece often hinges not just on what sounds are obtained, but on how they are obtained. 2) Over the past 50 years, changes in the performance practice have altered what constitutes the work: magnetic tape was used until 2000 when it was replaced …
Korngold’S Compositional Style: A Comparison Of His Violin Concerto And The Film Scores Of Another Dawn, Anthony Adverse, And The Prince And The Pauper, Ji In Yang
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This dissertation explores the origins of Erich Wolfgang Korngold’s Violin Concerto (1945) and the derivation of much of the principal thematic material from three related film scores: Another Dawn, Anthony Adverse, and The Prince and the Pauper. (Unfortunately, the film score of Juarez, which is also related to the concerto, was not publicly available, so it is not mentioned in this dissertation.) Korngold was a child prodigy trained in Vienna from an early age, and he had a very successful career in Europe. He then accepted an offer from Warner Brothers around 1934 to work in the Hollywood film …
Coltrane Plays The Blues: Multi-Level Coherence And Stylistic Tendencies, Lukas Gabric
Coltrane Plays The Blues: Multi-Level Coherence And Stylistic Tendencies, Lukas Gabric
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
As a principal musical figure of the twentieth century, John Coltrane created a legacy that still resonates with listeners. Similarly, the blues may be regarded as one of the most iconic genres of the twentieth century. This dissertation examines Coltrane’s shifting stylistic tendencies to the blues and explores structural relationships with reductive voice leading analysis. As a variation form, the blues poses issues of continuity since every chorus may be regarded as self-sufficient and internally closed. Voice leading analysis provides a powerful explanation for the fact that Coltrane’s blues solos may be perceived as structurally unified. I also develop a …
Martial Caillebotte’S Mélodies And Scènes Lyriques: Analytical Essays And Performance Guide, Dominique Mccormick
Martial Caillebotte’S Mélodies And Scènes Lyriques: Analytical Essays And Performance Guide, Dominique Mccormick
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Composer, pianist and photographer, Martial Caillebotte (1853–1910) was the unknown younger brother of famous Impressionist painter, Gustave Caillebotte. Martial studied piano and harmony at the Paris Conservatory from 1870–1874. Martial created a substantial number of musical compositions including mélodies, scènes lyriques, operas, symphonic poems, as well as sacred choral and symphonic works. Born into a wealthy Parisian family, he did not need to work for a living and did not self-promote, therefore his pieces were rarely performed and after his death, most of his compositions were left in family archives. In the late 1990’s a rebirth of interest in the …
“From The Heart, May It Go To The Heart”: Liturgy And Embodiment In Beethoven’S Missa Solemnis, Brigid J. Coleridge
“From The Heart, May It Go To The Heart”: Liturgy And Embodiment In Beethoven’S Missa Solemnis, Brigid J. Coleridge
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Since its 1824 premiere in St. Petersburg, Beethoven’s Missa solemnis, Op. 123 has only ever been performed in secular concert settings. This performance history is reflected in critical trends in Missa solemnis scholarship. Following Adorno’s 1959 essay that characterized the Missa as “alienated,” critical perspectives on Beethoven’s last Mass have largely responded to the work as "absolute" music, indifferent to or disregarding the Mass text. Despite its exclusively secular performance history, however, the Missa solemnis was written for use in the Mass liturgy (at the installation of the Archduke Rudolf as Archbishop of Olmütz). Moreover, the Missa was composed …
Viola Fragments: Contextualizing And Interpreting Selections From György Kurtág's Signs, Games And Messages, Mounir Nessim
Viola Fragments: Contextualizing And Interpreting Selections From György Kurtág's Signs, Games And Messages, Mounir Nessim
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The viola came to prominence as a solo instrument relatively late compared to the violin and cello. As a result, the standard repertoire is more recent, consisting largely of twentieth century works. The standard repertoire continues to expand as new works are written and embraced by performers. One such work is the Hungarian composer György Kurtág's open ended collection of pieces for solo viola Signs, Games and Messages (1987-). Kurtág, born in 1926, is one of the most important composers of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. His music is characterized by its brevity, fragmentation, ambiguity, and intertextuality. The painstaking scrutiny …

Four Works For Trumpet: Compositions By: Torelli, La Barbera, Ewazen And Hovhaness, Charles Meggitt
Recital Papers
The works included in this recital paper are presented as a program of music that delves into the expressive range of the trumpet as a solo instrument, and its uses by composers of differing time periods and artistic directions. The composers of this program were deliberately selected for their extreme sensibilities and knowledge of the uses of trumpet as a solo instrument. In this paper works by Giuseppe Torelli, John La Barbera, Eric Ewazen and Alan Hovhaness are explored to benefit performers and audience members through an exposure to both standard and unique selections of the repertoire.

A Study Of Select World-Federated International Piano Competitions: Influential Factors In Performer Repertoire Choices, Yuan-Hung Lin
Dissertations
In the last ninety years, international music competitions have increased steadily. According to the 2011 Yearbook of the World Federation of International Music Competitions (WFIMC)—founded in 1957—there were only thirteen world-federated international competitions at its founding, with at least nine competitions featuring or including piano. One of the founding competitions, the Chopin competition held in Warsaw, dates back to 1927. The number of world-federated international competitions has since increased to 122 in 2019, with a total of fifty-nine piano competitions (thirty-two dedicated solely to piano). More and more, pianists strive to participate in several competitions in order to win a …

A Legacy Preserved: A Comparison Of The Careers And Recordings Of Stanley Drucker And Karl Leister, Peter M. Geldrich
Theses and Dissertations
Today’s musician has an unprecedented amount of recordings through which they can influence their tonal concept, guide their phasing, and instill appropriate musical style. However, this abundance of recordings is both a treasure trove and a labyrinth in which one can lose their way without proper background on the recording artist. This context is necessary to determine the recordings in which a particular artist is most adept, and what stylistic lessons the artist best imparts. This document provides a comprehensive study of the careers and recordings of two of the most important clarinetists of the twentieth-century; Stanley Drucker and Karl …

Understanding Viktor Ullmann Through His Liederbuch Des Hafis, Chad G. Louwerse
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
The Liederbuch des Hafis is an enjoyable, complex, well-thought-out set of songs that feature a variety of musical styles, which are composed with a variety of compositional methods. The songs provide interesting and rewarding challenges to singer and pianist alike and are enjoyable to hear as an audience member. They are important because they are great examples of Viktor Ullmann’s skill as a song composer, and they also have great potential for concert programming as each song is distinct, and the set contrasts well with other repertoire. This is also an excellent set of songs for bass-baritones, who lack a …

George Enesco (1881-1955) was one of the most important musical personalities, fascinating and diverse of the XX Century. Acclaimed as a composer, appreciated as a conductor, and considered an example of the highest order of violin playing, he performed throughout Europe, Russia, and North America. His compositional legacy succeeded in incorporating a wide variety of genres: chamber music for strings, wind and voice, instrumental solo concertos, symphonies, and operas, Oedipe being one of the most acclaimed. The purpose of this paper is to explain the process of transcribing Enesco’s Violin and Piano Sonata No. 2 in F minor Op. 6 …
The Concurrent Prevalence Of Modernism And Romanticism As Seen In The Operas Performed Between The World Wars And Exemplified In Ernst Krenek’S Jonny Spielt Auf, Nicole Fassold
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Ernst Krenek’s 1927 opera Jonny Spielt Auf represents Zeitoper, or “opera of the times”. The opera’s story line and characters symbolize Krenek’s internal debate of a divided artistic world between all that is modern and innovative and the older mindset of romanticism, both of which he used in his compositions. This dissertation intends to peer into Krenek’s world and influences of the 1920s to consider the symbols in the opera that represent Modernism and Romanticism. The Golden Age of the Weimar Republic occurred from 1924 to 1929, between the World Wars. During this time, Austrian and German composers had the …

Analyzing Perceptions Of Music From A Songwriting Perspective, Jackson Stephen Reynosa
Analyzing Perceptions Of Music From A Songwriting Perspective, Jackson Stephen Reynosa
Communication Studies
This study seeks to understand listeners’ perceptions of music from a generational and songwriting approach. A total of 123 participants aged 18 and older took part in an open-ended survey design that measured their subjective music preferences. Four different sections tested participants’ music taste, music tied to generations, an original song made by the researcher, and songwriting in a holistic sense. It was found that participants exercised individualism and authenticity in their responses throughout. By using the Uses and Gratifications Theory, it is explainable that people listened and sought out music for their own unique reasons. By applying Mood Management …
The Mutability Of The Score: An Examination Of The Value Of Score Alteration In Virtuosic Piano Repertoire, Wayne Weng
The Mutability Of The Score: An Examination Of The Value Of Score Alteration In Virtuosic Piano Repertoire, Wayne Weng
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This dissertation is a defense of the value of score alteration in virtuosic piano repertoire. Score alteration is a performance practice, much heard during the so-called “Golden Age” of pianism, in which pianists would freely modify the score in order to suit their interpretation and make their performances more effective. In our present age of urtext editions and absolute fidelity to the score, I believe that a re-examination of score alteration is crucial to any modern performer.
I have examined numerous recordings and performances (many of them rare and not commercially released), to explore how the practice of score modification …
Corporeal Analysis: The Performing Body As Analytic Site, Laura Cocks
Corporeal Analysis: The Performing Body As Analytic Site, Laura Cocks
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
A framework of corporeal analysis posits that the physicality of the performer can be construed as a primary analytical parameter in a work. This dissertation seeks to set up such a method of analysis largely through anecdata and autoethnography with the aim of eliciting a deeper space for additional performer-driven analyses that prioritize the bodily knowledge of performers and their physical understandings of a work. Centering around David Bird’s 2013 work for solo piccolo and “no-less-than twenty-nine spatialized piccolos,” Atolls, three main aspects of corporeal analysis will be explored. These are: performance physicality as expressive connective tissue between flutist …
