Virtual Wrap-Up Presentation: Digital Libraries, Intelligent Data Analytics, And Augmented Description, Elizabeth Lorang, Leen-Kiat Soh, Yi Liu, Chulwoo Pack
CSE Conference and Workshop Papers
Includes framing, overview, and discussion of the explorations pursued as part of the Digital Libraries, Intelligent Data Analytics, and Augmented Description demonstration project, pursued by members of the Aida digital libraries research team at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln through a research services contract with the Library of Congress. This presentation covered: Aida research team and background for the demonstration project; broad outlines of “Digital Libraries, Intelligent Data Analytics, and Augmented Description”; what changed for us as a research team over the collaboration and why; deliverables of our work; thoughts toward “What next”; and deep-dives into the explorations. The machine learning …

CSE Conference and Workshop Papers
This presentation summarized and presented preliminary results from the first weeks of work conducted by the Aida research team in response to Library of Congress funding notice ID 030ADV19Q0274, “The Library of Congress – Pre-processing Pilot.” It includes overviews of projects on historic document segmentation, document classification, document quality assessment, figure and graph extraction from historic documents, text-line extraction from figures, subject and objective quality assesments, and digitization type differentiation.

The Unfolding Argument: Why Iit And Other Causal Structure Theories Cannot Explain Consciousness, Adrian Doerig, Aaron Schurger, Kathryn Hess, Michael H. Herzog
Psychology Faculty Articles and Research
How can we explain consciousness? This question has become a vibrant topic of neuroscience research in recent decades. A large body of empirical results has been accumulated, and many theories have been proposed. Certain theories suggest that consciousness should be explained in terms of brain functions, such as accessing information in a global workspace, applying higher order to lower order representations, or predictive coding. These functions could be realized by a variety of patterns of brain connectivity. Other theories, such as Information Integration Theory (IIT) and Recurrent Processing Theory (RPT), identify causal structure with consciousness. For example, according to …

Application Of The Image Analysis For Archival Discovery Team’S First- Generation Methods And Software To The Burney Collection Of British Newspapers, Elizabeth Lorang, Leen-Kiat Soh, Chulwoo Pack, Yi Liu, Delaram Rahimighazikalayeh, John O'Brien
CDRH Grant Reports
The current study, “Application of the Image Analysis for Archival Discovery Team’s First- Generation Methods and Software to the Burney Collection of British Newspapers,” is the first test of our approaches—methods and software—to a different newspaper corpus, specifically the 17th and 18 Century Burney Newspapers Collection. This study stands as the first complete attempt at applying Aida’s software and methods to non-Chronicling America newspapers, as a step toward understanding the potential of our approaches across digitized historic newspapers. In taking this step, our goals were (1) to test how well the software and a classifier model developed on Chronicling America …

Interim Performance Report, Lg‐71‐16‐0152‐16, Extending Intelligent Computational Image Analysis For Archival Discovery, March 2019, Elizabeth Lorang, Leen-Kiat Soh, John O'Brien
CDRH Grant Reports
The primary goal of "Extending Intelligent Computational Image Analysis for Archival Discovery" is to investigate the use of image analysis as a methodology for content identification, description, and information retrieval in digital libraries and other digitized collections. Building on work started under a National Endowment for the Humanities' Office of Digital Humanities Start-up Grant, our IMLS project seeks to 1) analyze and verify our previously developed image analysis approach and extend it so that it is newspaper agnostic, type agnostic, and language agnostic; 2) scale and revise the intelligent image analysis approach and determine the ideal balance between precision and …
Vocal Emotion Corpus Data, Logan Kowallis
Vocal Emotion Corpus Data, Logan Kowallis
ScholarsArchive Data
This corpus contains over 50 hours of voice acted readings as part of a dissertation project. These recordings represent one of four emotions or the subject's normal speaking voice. The four emotions acted are: anger, fear, happiness, and sadness. These recordings can be useful for building a simple emotion recognition model. Data were collected from BYU students in 2019. Supporting documents designed for people wanting replicate this project are included in Documents.zip. For more information about these files, read the README file.
All audio files are encoded as 44.1 kHz .wav mono audio. Each subject read the 50-word script multiple …

Work-In-Progress Reports Submitted To The Library Of Congress As Part Of Digital Libraries, Intelligent Data Analytics, And Augmented Description, Chulwoo Pack, Yi Liu, Leen-Kiat Soh, Elizabeth Lorang
CSE Technical Reports
This document includes work-in-progress reports submitted to the Library of Congress as part of the Aida digital libraries research team's work on Digital Libraries, Intelligent Data Analytics, and Augmented Description: A Demonstration Project. These work-in-progress reports provide a snapshot glimpse, as well as underlying rationale and decision-making, at various points in the development of the project and its machine learning explorations. Reports cover explorations on historic newspapers, minimally-processed manuscript collections, materials digitized from physical originals and those digitized from microform surrogates, and investigate challenges related to image segmentation and document zoning, classification, document image quality analysis, metadata generation, and more.
Octopus: Multiple Minds Or Just A Slow Thinker?, Shelley A. Adamo
Octopus: Multiple Minds Or Just A Slow Thinker?, Shelley A. Adamo
Animal Sentience
An octopus has more neurons in their peripheral nervous system (PNS) than in their brain. PNS neurons could participate in forming cognitive networks with the central brain in the same way that the cerebellum is now thought to contribute to mammalian cognition. However, cephalopods lack myelinated fibres, which might decrease the ability of the PNS to participate in cognitive networks. The lack of myelinated fibres may also select for a less integrated brain, with an increased emphasis on local information processing. Alternatively, integration may still occur across distant neural centers, but proceed more slowly in cephalopods than in mammals.

Facial Re-Enactment, Speech Synthesis And The Rise Of The Deepfake, Nicholas Gardiner
Theses : Honours
Emergent technologies in the fields of audio speech synthesis and video facial manipulation have the potential to drastically impact our societal patterns of multimedia consumption. At a time when social media and internet culture is plagued by misinformation, propaganda and “fake news”, their latent misuse represents a possible looming threat to fragile systems of information sharing and social democratic discourse. It has thus become increasingly recognised in both academic and mainstream journalism that the ramifications of these tools must be examined to determine what they are and how their widespread availability can be managed.
This research project seeks to examine …
