Putting A Face To Cancer, Lenn Robbins

Capstones

About one month after I began my studies at the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism, I was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer, Langerhans Cell Histiocytosis (LCH). Three years and three relapses later, I have my MA, I defiant will to fight this disease and the hope that by chronicling my experience I might help others. If this project helps just one person, it's been worth the ride.

Faith And Faithfulness In The Book Of Mormon, Noel B. Reynolds Nov 2019

Faith And Faithfulness In The Book Of Mormon, Noel B. Reynolds

Faculty Publications

The concept of covenantal faithfulness toward Yahweh that Old Testament scholars have recognized and defined over the last century turns out to be a far better account of the Book of Mormon understanding of faith in the Lord, in Jesus Christ, than are any of the competing concepts of faith that have grown out of the Christian tradition over the last two millennia. For the Nephite prophets, faith was an active concept, better understood as faithfulness—as diligent obedience to the commandments the Lord has given to those who have accepted the gospel covenant through repentance and baptism. The divine …

Role Of Hadiths In The Struggle Against The Danger Of Takfir, Aziz Tajiyev

The Light of Islam

Today the fact that the concepts such as “takfir”, “hijra”, “jihad” and “martyrdom” are interpreted wrongly by different extremist groups and organizations is observed. Especially, the concept of “takfir” that used by these sects in an another sense was developed because of wrong interpretation of real content of hadiths, mistakes made in the commentaries as well as in understanding of hadiths and it is considered as one of the troubles that has threatened Muslims since the early period of Islam till now. In fact, this concept is used now for declaring war against Muslims and trespassing on their lifes and …

Cultivating Inclusive And Peaceful Communities: Multi-Faith Sources Of Inspiration, Mary Dana Hinton Aug 2019

Cultivating Inclusive And Peaceful Communities: Multi-Faith Sources Of Inspiration, Mary Dana Hinton

The Journal of Social Encounters

Leaders, educators, clergy and laypeople engaged in the work of peacemaking must acknowledge the powerful role religion can play in the peacebuilding effort. However, we cannot limit our peacebuilding conversation to religious communities. Educational institutions also have a uniquely compelling role to play in the work of peacebuilding. This essay reviews why and how educational institutions must engage in this work; explores emerging best practices in this area; and concludes with a call to action.

Importantly, the essay highlights the importance, power and capacity of interfaith dialogue and education to support peacebuilding. Interfaith education and dialogue is not a call …

Is Ai Intelligent, Really?, Bruce D. Baker Aug 2019

Is Ai Intelligent, Really?, Bruce D. Baker

SPU Works

The question of intelligence opens up a bouquet of interrelated questions:

Suppose that some future AGI systems (on-screen or robots) equaled human performance. Would they have real intelligence, real understanding, real creativity? Would they have selves, moral standing, free choice? Would they be conscious? And without consciousness, could they have any of those other properties?[1]

The only way out of the morass is to recognize that truth claims do not stand on their own, aloof and cut off from the sea of meaning which grants epistemic access. In other words, truth presumes access to: (1) a way of knowing, …

I See You, God, John S. Tanner Jul 2019

I See You, God, John S. Tanner

Religious Educator: Perspectives on the Restored Gospel

Aloha! I am both honored and a bit daunted to be invited to speak to you about the reason for the hope that is in me. The topic seems to call for a talk in a personal vein. So I shall speak autobiographically about the reasons for the hope I felt as a young man preparing to go on a mission and for the hope I feel today. I also will touch upon larger epistemological questions about how I know. I have entitled my talk “I See You, God” for reasons that will become clear later.

Faith In Jesus Christ, Susan W. Tanner

Religious Educator: Perspectives on the Restored Gospel

I am glad to express some of my feelings about “a reason of the hope that is in [me]” (1 Peter 3:15). I will speak a bit about my journey of faith, which really is, I believe, a journey or quest of a lifetime for all of us.

Effloresce, Rebecca Lee Schneller May 2019

Effloresce, Rebecca Lee Schneller

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Effloresce is a series of oil paintings and charcoal drawings containing the human figure and natural imagery and forms. This pairing represents the intersection of the inner realm of human emotion and spiritual experience with the external realm of nature and the world.

Both contemporary and historical painting and drawing traditions serve as inspiration for this body of work, particularly the natural symbology found in Medieval and Renaissance Art. I employ painting techniques inspired by contemporary painters Alex Kanevsky, Mia Bergeron, Helene Delmaire, and Zoey Frank, as well as historical painters John Singer Sargent, Joaquin Sorolla, Rembrandt Van Rijn, Lucian …

Dusty Shoes: Appalachia Wisdom Fertilizing The Future Of Religious Leadership, Jill Crainshaw Apr 2019

Dusty Shoes: Appalachia Wisdom Fertilizing The Future Of Religious Leadership, Jill Crainshaw

Journal of Appalachian Health

Dust from their journeys through the hills and hollows of Appalachia clings to their shoes and has forever shaped their vocational journeys. This is a refrain I have distilled from the reflections of students who have participated in Wake Forest University School of Divinity’s multicultural contexts course that includes a 10-day sojourn in the mountains of North Carolina.

Generation Z And Faith: The Cognitive, Experiential, And Praxis, Houston Thompson, Nikki Dention, Julia Mcqueen, Abby Groters Apr 2019

Generation Z And Faith: The Cognitive, Experiential, And Praxis, Houston Thompson, Nikki Dention, Julia Mcqueen, Abby Groters

Scholar Week 2016 - present

With every generation there is a sociological shift in the way faith is understood and expressed. Generation Z, those born after 1995, have been influenced by post-modernity and a changing worldview. Like generations before them, Generation Z is forming their own interpretations and experiences to define and express faith. This research discovers the attitudes and behaviors of Generation Z about their faith by looking at three aspects: 1) cognitive development; 2) personal experience; 3) expression or practice.

"Using Luther’S Small Catechism As A Family Devotional" A Study Of Family Prayer At Messiah Lutheran Church Hays, Kansas 2018, Rocco Mallardi

Doctor of Ministry Major Applied Project

Mallardi, Rocco J. “Using Luther’s Small Catechism as a Family Devotional.” A study of Family Prayer at Messiah Lutheran Church Hays, Kansas 2018.” Doctor of Ministry. Major Applied Project, Concordia Seminary, 2019. 153 pp.

The goal of this study was to seek an answer to the question: how can a church help parents teach the faith in the home? In search of an answer to this question I studied how Martin Luther answered the question. From this study I developed a Small Catechism based curriculum for families to use as they gather for prayer and the study of God’s Word.

Infideles Et Philosophi: Assent, Untruth, And Natural Knowledge Of The Simple God, Jeffrey M. Walkey Apr 2019

Infideles Et Philosophi: Assent, Untruth, And Natural Knowledge Of The Simple God, Jeffrey M. Walkey

Dissertations (1934 -)

Victor Preller’s “reformulation” of St. Thomas has impacted many contemporary theologians and philosophers, among them, George Lindbeck, Stanley Hauerwas, Bruce Marshall, D. Stephen Long, Fergus Kerr, to name only a few. According to Kerr, Preller is responsible for bringing to the fore St. Thomas’s denial that unbelievers can be truly said to believe “God exists.” In particular, Preller draws our attention to ST II-II, q. 2, a. 2, ad 3. Seemingly, in light of this passage, all non-believers have a defect in cognition with respect to the simple God. As such, they cannot be said to believe “God exists” at …

Confessing Characters: Coming To Faith In The Gospel Of John, Dominic Zappia Apr 2019

Confessing Characters: Coming To Faith In The Gospel Of John, Dominic Zappia

Dissertations (1934 -)

There are at least seventy-two characters in the Fourth Gospel. Given its statement of purpose in 20:30-31, which suggests that it is for the sake of narrating miracles to produce faith, this observation is of interest. According to traditional counting there are seven miracles in John. Nonetheless, much of the Gospel is the retelling not of miracles but of conversations and other encounters between Jesus and a wide variety of characters, many of whom are not directly tied to these miracles. Given the number and variety of characters in John, questions arise: What function do characters as characters serve in …
