About Time: Visualizing Time At Burning Man, Gordon D. Hoople, Austin Choi-Fitzpatrick, Nathaniel Parde, Diane Hoffoss, Max Mellette, Rachel Nishimura, Virginia Gutman
The STEAM Journal
About Time was a 30 foot long, 3000 pound wooden sundial that went up in flames at Burning Man 2019. The piece reflected on the role time plays in our lives. We organize our lives around time—are enslaved to time—and yet we know so little about it. Physicists and philosophers continue to grapple with deep puzzles of time—Is time a fundamental quantity, independent of human actions or observations or is it an emergent property of our perception? This installation projected time using two sundials: a horizontal dial which swept time out across the desert floor and an …

“Putting The Arts In Their Place”: A Case For Map-Making In Art History, Marco Jalla
“Putting The Arts In Their Place”: A Case For Map-Making In Art History, Marco Jalla
Artl@s Bulletin
The use of cartography in art history is less than common. Because of its link to the old artistic geography (Kunstgeographie) once used to defend nationalist issues in Nazi Germany, it fell into disfavor until the 1960s and 1970s, when maps regained some attention from a new generation of art historians. Mapping arts indeed proves to be very useful to visualize and organize large dataset and to formulate new hypotheses, both as a descriptive and a prospective tool. The challenge we proposed to the authors was to use maps for questioning the territorial logics, the centers and peripheries of the …
Visual Contagions, The Art Historian, And The Digital Strategies To Work On Them, Béatrice Joyeux-Prunel
Visual Contagions, The Art Historian, And The Digital Strategies To Work On Them, Béatrice Joyeux-Prunel
Artl@s Bulletin
How do images and styles spread out over time and place? This article presents how art historians can use digital methods to study “visual contagions”– the visual part of globalization: how images circulate, as material artefacts (paintings, sculptures, engravings, etc.…) or in reproductions (in illustrated periodicals, in photography, or on the internet…), through which channels (cultural, geographical, political…) and according to which visual logics. It sketches the new possibilities offered by deep learning and artificial intelligence algorithms applied to images, to better understand the epidemiology of visual diffusions. This Paper is also an opportunity to assess 10 years of digital …

Survivors’ Hardships Following The Atomic Bombing Of Nagasaki, Meghan Keenan

The Feeling Heart In Medieval And Early Modern Europe: Meaning, Embodiment, And Making, Katie Barclay, Bronwyn Reddan
The Feeling Heart In Medieval And Early Modern Europe: Meaning, Embodiment, And Making, Katie Barclay, Bronwyn Reddan
Studies in Medieval and Early Modern Culture
The heart is an iconic symbol in the medieval and early modern European world. In addition to being a physical organ, it is a key conceptual device related to emotions, cognition, the self and identity, and the body. The heart is read as a metaphor for human desire and will, and situated in opposition to or alongside reason and cognition. In medieval and early modern Europe, the “feeling heart”—the heart as the site of emotion and emotional practices—informed a broad range of art, literature, music, heraldry, medical texts, and devotional and ritual practices. This multidisciplinary collection brings together art historians, …

The Horse In Premodern European Culture, Anastasija Ropa
Studies in Medieval and Early Modern Culture
This volume provides a unique introduction to the most topical issues, advances, and challenges in medieval horse history. Medievalists who have a long-standing interest in horse history, as well as those seeking to widen their understanding of horses in medieval society will find here informed and comprehensive treatment of chapters from disciplines as diverse as archaeology, legal, economic and military history, urban and rural history, art and literature. The themes range from case studies of saddles and bridles, to hippiatric treatises, to the medieval origins of dressage. It shows the ubiquitous – and often ambiguous – role of the horse …
Late Anglo-Saxon Prayer In Practice: Before The Books Of Hours, Kate Thomas
Late Anglo-Saxon Prayer In Practice: Before The Books Of Hours, Kate Thomas
Richard Rawlinson Center Series
This monograph examines the practice of Anglo-Saxon prayer outside of the communal liturgy. With a particular emphasis on its practical aspects, it considers how small groups of prayers were elaborated into complex programs for personal devotion, resulting in the forerunners of the Special Offices. With examples being taken chiefly from major eleventh-century collections of prayers, liturgy, and medical remedies, the methodologies of Anglo-Saxon compilers are examined, followed by five chapters on specialist kinds of prayer: to the Trinity and saints, for liturgical feasts and the canonical hours, to the Holy Cross, for protection and healing, and confessions. Analyzing prayer in …
Reflections On Critical Pedagogy In America Latina: La Lucha Continua, Peter Mclaren
Reflections On Critical Pedagogy In America Latina: La Lucha Continua, Peter Mclaren
Education Faculty Articles and Research
"When I speak in Mexico, I support efforts there to create a revolutionary critical pedagogy—one that has not been domesticated and depotentiated by neoliberal dogma. This means the inclusion of a decolonial pedagogy which challenges the “coloniality of power” (patron de poder colonial) that still resides at the heart of post-colonial societies. I would advise as a central, overarching goal of critical pedagogy the struggle for a socialist alternative to the “value form of labor” that exists in capitalist societies throughout North and South America, and that such efforts must be transnational in scope since capitalism is now transnational in …
The Performance Tradition Of The Medieval English University: The Works Of Thomas Chaundler, Thomas Meacham
The Performance Tradition Of The Medieval English University: The Works Of Thomas Chaundler, Thomas Meacham
Early Drama, Art, and Music
Contrary to previous scholarship, which has claimed that university drama did not occur at the English universities before the Tudor period, Meacham argues that there was a vibrant tradition of performance throughout the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. He suggests an earlier tradition has not been recognized because, in addition to the false assumption that medieval pedagogy cannot support such activity, the full range of medieval performance practices or "texts," beyond the traditional play text, have not been considered. This book takes as its focus one of the last medieval university plays, Thomas Chaundler’s Liber apologeticus de omni statu humanae naturae …
