Alienation, And Its Antidote: Geographical Estrangement In The Modern Moment, Anna Nissley
English Department: Traveling American Modernism (ENG 366, Fall 2018)
The modern American moment has been marked by geographic estrangement: the alienation of human populations from their surrounding physical environments. This paper explores the modern phenomenon of geographic alienation by situating it within a specific historical frame, beginning with American Manifest Destiny in the mid-1800s and ending in the second half of the twentieth century, drawing connections between sociopolitical movements and their aftereffects. Identifying examples of alienation between humans and their environments through analysis of texts Black Elk Speaks and Blue Highways, as well as other cultural artifacts, this work gestures toward ways of reconciling past wrongs and offers solutions …

The Pentecostal Roots Of Oral Roberts’ Healing Ministry, Vinson H. Synan
Spiritus: ORU Journal of Theology
This article delves into the development of the healing doctrine of the Pentecostal Holiness Church in which Oral Roberts was born, raised, and ordained to the ministry. Attention is given to the roots of healing teachings from both Europe and America, which were adopted by the Pentecostal movement. The main part of the paper describes the doctrinal statements on healing in the founding documents of the Pentecostal Holiness Church, the widespread acceptance of the Alexander Dowie position on refusing the use of doctors and medicine, the division over the use of remedies that produced the Congregational Holiness Church, and the …

An Overview Of The Theology Of Oral Roberts, R. Samuel Thorpe
An Overview Of The Theology Of Oral Roberts, R. Samuel Thorpe
Spiritus: ORU Journal of Theology
Oral Roberts’ life and healing ministry were shaped by his theology of God. Roberts viewed God as good, who personally worked in the lives of people in the present, and who had good plans for each believer. The manifestation of these plans depended, however, on the faith of the individual believer. God was affected by events in time, was limited in his ability to act by the cooperation of the believer, and suffered emotional distress even as people do. The overriding element in all of Roberts’ message is that “Something good is going to happen to you.” Christians should expect …

Spiritus: ORU Journal of Theology
Oral Roberts was a pioneer in the development of Christian television. This study traces the development of Oral Roberts’ television ministry from the early days of 1950s televised healing crusades, through the 1970s prime-time variety shows, and his later broadcasts that supported the various ministry endeavors, such as Oral Roberts University and the City of Faith.
Oral Roberts And The Hebrew Bible, Eric N. Newberg, Samuel Hogan
Oral Roberts And The Hebrew Bible, Eric N. Newberg, Samuel Hogan
Spiritus: ORU Journal of Theology
Oral Roberts held a favorable view of Jewish people and viewed the restoration of the state of Israel as the fulfillment of biblical prophecy. This article recounts a key facet of the Jewish outreach of the Oral Roberts Evangelistic Association, the Hebrew Bible project. In collaboration with Myron Sackett, Oral Roberts sponsored the publication of a Hebrew Bible (Old and New Testaments) and distributed it in Israel and other countries. Roberts was motivated by a desire to play a major role in the conversion of the Jewish people in the last days. By means of exhaustive research of relevant source …

“Sanarnos Para Sanar El Mundo”: Un Estudio De Mujeres Activistas Contra El Extractivismo Y Los Poderes Curativos De Terapia Social / "Heal Us To Heal The World": A Study Of Women Activists Against Extractivism And Healing Powers Of Social Therapy, Alisha Kendrick-Pradhan
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
Well-Being And Self-Transformation In Indian Psychology, Sangeetha Menon, Shankar Rajaraman, Lakshmi Kuchibotla
Well-Being And Self-Transformation In Indian Psychology, Sangeetha Menon, Shankar Rajaraman, Lakshmi Kuchibotla
International Journal of Transpersonal Studies
This paper uses instances from literature covering a broad spectrum of Indian philosophies, art, medicine and practices—attempts to offer the components of a psychology that is rooted in transformative and transpersonal consciousness. Psychology, in this instance, refers to a systematic study of mind, behavior, and relationship, rather than the formal Western discipline as such. In the Indian approach to understanding consciousness, primary importance is given to the possibility of well-being. Such an approach facilitates an immediate comprehension of the unity of metaphysical opposites, such as matter and consciousness, and its experience as empathy, love and intuition. It involves a thinking …
Face Management And Servant-Leadership: A Hermeneutic Phenomenological Study Of Chinese And American Christian Church Leaders, Jiying Song
Faculty Publications - Department of Professional Studies
Leaders can have a negative impact on organizations when they knowingly or unknowingly attempt to save face, that is, try to protect their standing or reputation. The strong cultural value of not losing face presents a unique challenge for organizational leaders. The desire to gain face and the fear of losing face will likely permeate leaders‟ decision-making processes without even being noticed. The phenomenon of face exists both in China and in the United States, yet misunderstandings and a lack of understanding of face exist in both countries. Face management is the communicative strategies people use to manage face during …
Healing Through Humility: An Examination Of Augustine's Confessions, Catherine Maurer
Healing Through Humility: An Examination Of Augustine's Confessions, Catherine Maurer
All NMU Master's Theses
The concepts outlined by St. Augustine show how confessional writing leads to breaking the bonds that trap people in negativity, self-doubt, hurt, depression, grief, despair, and shame. His writing journeys through breaking the barriers pride placed on him while working to show how those barriers came into place. This thesis analyzes Augustine’s confessions through the lens of humility to show how Augustine’s revelations do more than bridge the gap between saint and sinner. They speak to the capacity of humility to define the individual in honest and practical ways. Augustine, along with many other saints and scholars of humility, holds …
A Change Of Heart: Internal Narratives, Forgiveness & Health, Keiko Ehret
A Change Of Heart: Internal Narratives, Forgiveness & Health, Keiko Ehret
Dissertations, Masters Theses, Capstones, and Culminating Projects
In this thesis I investigate the interconnectedness of forgiveness as a narrative, as a philosophical, religious and cultural phenomenon, and the ways in which forgiveness is increasingly being used as a vehicle for improving health and psychological well-being. By threading together how scholars in a variety of fields have approached these areas of study, we can better understand the way the interdisciplinary nature of forgiveness grants access to heal not merely relationships with others, but also our bodies, our minds, and our relationship with ourselves.
Important to my investigation is understanding that the life circumstances that prompt forgiveness consist of …

The project engaged congregants of St. Paul African Methodist Episcopal Church in Canton, Georgia in a series of five workshops that taught, modeled, and used storytelling as a pastoral care intervention. The personal stories of five research participants were recorded in individual sessions. Common themes within the individual stories shared were identified and discussed with the research group. Drama As Dream: Sophoclean Tragedy And The Cult Of Asclepius, Molly C. Mata
Drama As Dream: Sophoclean Tragedy And The Cult Of Asclepius, Molly C. Mata
Foreign Languages & Literatures ETDs
This thesis explores tragic drama as a corresponding ritual to the incubation ritual in the cult of Asclepius and theorizes that this ritual is psychologically cathartic and healing. I argue that in Ajax and Philoctetes, Sophocles marks this cathartic ritual through nosological language, setting, and social context. In my first chapter, I explore Sophocles’ use of the language of madness (mania) and illness (nosos) in Ajax to show the exacerbation of the audience’s psychological state. Next, I show that catharsis is achieved through the negotiation and subsequent burial of Ajax. In my second chapter, I argue that Sophocles uses both …
Succor In Smoke: A Historical And Comparative Analysis Of Incense And Moxibustion As Similar Agents Of Edification And Self-Cultivation, Hannah E. Matulek
Succor In Smoke: A Historical And Comparative Analysis Of Incense And Moxibustion As Similar Agents Of Edification And Self-Cultivation, Hannah E. Matulek
Black & Gold
Since its origins in the Shang Dynasty nearly 3,000 years ago, traditional Chinese medicine has undergone many dramatic shifts and adapted to a wide range of cultural, social, religious and foreign pressures. One of the most notable changes is the attribution of the etiology of disease (as well as general poor health and behaviors) from volatile and dissatisfied external forces to manageable internal forces. This allowed for a flourishing of thought in Chinese medicine, for once granting an individual the power to influence his or her own health. Three religions—Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism—were also introduced to China at this time, …
A Biblical Approach For An Inner Healing Discipleship Cycle For Migrants And Refugees, Diói Cruz
A Biblical Approach For An Inner Healing Discipleship Cycle For Migrants And Refugees, Diói Cruz
Journal of Adventist Mission Studies
"Within the Adventist Church many immigrants struggle silently with the consequences of emotional pain, fear, failure, anxiety, stress, inadequate parenting, rejection, and abusive relationships. Many try to cope with the ongoing results of involvement in the occult or other false religions, and the effects of physical illness, accidents, and trauma continue to impact their lives. It is God’s desire that we prosper and be in good health (3 John 2) because he created us in his image. “For in Him we live, and move, and have our being” (Acts 17:28). Therefore, if we are to reflect his image we must …
Latinx/Chicanx Students On The Path To Conocimiento: Critical Reflexivity Journals As Tools For Healing And Resistance In The Trump Era, Jesica S. Fernández, Alejandra Magaña Gamero
Latinx/Chicanx Students On The Path To Conocimiento: Critical Reflexivity Journals As Tools For Healing And Resistance In The Trump Era, Jesica S. Fernández, Alejandra Magaña Gamero
Ethnic Studies
Anzaldúa’s concept of conocimiento guides our analysis of Latinx/Chicanx students’ Critical Reflexivity Journals (CRJ) produced in an Ethnic Studies classroom at a predominantly-white institution. Through a thematic analysis procedure of students’ CRJ entries, which we describe as written testimonios, we discerned how Latinx/Chicanx students’ writings engaged their identities, reflexivity, healing, and resistance on a path toward conocimiento. Grounding our theoretical and empirical analysis in Anzaldúan thought, conocimiento is characterized by a deep reflexive critical consciousness that unfolds across seven interconnected stages. Conocimiento builds toward a liberatory transformation that Anzaldúa describes as spiritual activism, the seventh and final stage of conocimiento. …
