Spain in the 20th century was marked by a period of evolution with regard to the role of women in society. The feminist movement worked to incorporate Spain’s women into the social sphere, which meant crossing the threshold that divided their homes from the outside world. Writer Miguel de Unamuno was critical of this new emerging role of women in society as well as some, although not all, aspects of the feminist movement, which can be seen reflected in his works.
