Cultural Industries In China And Their Importance In Asian Communities, Qingben Li
Cultural Industries In China And Their Importance In Asian Communities, Qingben Li
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In his article “Cultural Industries in China and their Importance in Asian Communities”, Qingben Li discusses the concept of cultural industries in China, the new trend and the importance of cultural industries in Asia. Following the model of the One Asia Foundation, Li argues that cultural industries will play an ever-increasing important role in economy. Contrary to thoughts held by some Western scholars, Li points out, Chinese culture has not always been closed, but open and inclusive to the world in general. Moreover, Li argues that the unique combination of Chinese traditional culture and new media will have an important …
Forbidden Citizens: The Chinese Diaspora Of Monterey Bay, Veronica Sanchez
Forbidden Citizens: The Chinese Diaspora Of Monterey Bay, Veronica Sanchez
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
The purpose of this essay is to educate California State University Monterey Bay students, the professors, and members of the Marina, Seaside, and Monterey community about the oppressive history that occurred in Pacific Grove towards the early Chinese who traveled to California. As far as research methods go, I read scholarly articles that included a history of the reoccurring conflicts between the Chinese fishermen and the business along Cannery Row, and books on what the Chinese endured while traveling to California. I attended events in the town of Pacific Grove that relate back to my topic, such as The Walk …

North Korea’S Nuclear Program And Negotiation: How Nuclear Negotiation During The Clinton Years Produced Lessons For Current International Relations, Brian Hilliker
Senior Honors Theses
North Korea’s road of survival began in the aftermath of World War II, when the United States and the Soviet Union sparred over rival ideologies. Ultimately, Korea split into a free south and an authoritarian north. Over seventy years later, North Korea remains a bastion of communism. Nuclear weaponry is a factor behind North Korea’s survival, and the history of their program can offer insight for American policy makers today. This paper offers a history of North Korea’s nuclear weapons program during the Clinton presidency, along with recommendations for present day policy makers. Without an understanding of history decision-makers tend …
Cinematic Amnesia As Remembering: Coming Home (2014) And Red Amnesia (2014), Ying Bao
Cinematic Amnesia As Remembering: Coming Home (2014) And Red Amnesia (2014), Ying Bao
Department of World Languages Faculty Research
This article examines the trope of amnesia—the crisis of memory—in two recent Chinese-language films dealing with traumatic memories of the Cultural Revolution and its aftermath: Zhang Yimou’s Coming Home (Guilai, 2014) and Wang Xiaoshuai’s Red Amnesia (Chuangru zhe, 2014). Cinematic representation of real and symbolic amnesia, I argue, can be an affective way to overcome historical amnesia, both institutionalized by the Party-state and privatized by individuals. By exploring the dynamics between forgetting and remembering at both collective and individual levels, we can reach a deeper understanding of the profound impact of the Cultural Revolution and its present-day repercussions.

Speaking Their Language: Developing A Bilingual Libguide For Chinese Students., Nathan Elwood, Maryalice Wade
Kansas Library Association College and University Libraries Section Proceedings
This article documents the development of a bilingual English/Mandarin library guide for the Chinese student population of Fort Hays State University. Growing international student populations across the country mean that many university libraries need to customize services for unique student groups. At Forsyth Library of Fort Hays State University we serve over 3600 students from China. We sought to develop further services for this student group. Please note that throughout this paper, when referring to “Chinese language,” we are specifically referencing Standard Mandarin, which is predominant among our Chinese students.

Haldore Hanson In China, The 80th Anniversary: A Case Study Of A Digitization Project, Kristi Wermager, Hsianghui Liu-Spencer
Journal of East Asian Libraries
Carleton College is home to a collection of photographs, Haldore Hanson’s China Collection (1937-1938), that an alumnus took in China during the Second Sino-Japanese War. In 2008 Carleton staff digitized the China Collection and made it available to researchers online. In our paper, we introduce the Collection and discuss its historical significance, in particular for the history of guerrilla warfare during the early days of the conflict. Following our introductory overview of the Collection, we report on our use of web usage mining to track use of the Collection over the last ten years. We also discuss the …

Mackinder And The Arctic's Emerging Geopolitics: Recommendations For The U.S. And Its Nato Allies, Bert Chapman
Libraries Faculty and Staff Presentations
This presentation shows how Halford Mackinder (1861-1947) described Canada and the Arctic region in his geopolitical writings. It goes on to stress how the Arctic is becoming increasingly important in international geopolitical policymaking due to its significant oil and natural gas resources, how warming temperatures are increasing international access to its waters, and the how countries as diverse as Canada, China, Russia, and the U.S. see the Arctic region in their strategic policymaking. It concludes by stressing that the Arctic can no longer be viewed as a region immune from international conflict and presents recommendations for the U.S. and its …

Sinolization Of Christianity: Increasing Gospel Relevance Or Distorting The Gospel Message?, L. Asher
Sinolization Of Christianity: Increasing Gospel Relevance Or Distorting The Gospel Message?, L. Asher
Journal of Adventist Mission Studies
"This study aims to address the concept of the Sinolization of Christianity in light of cultural studies, biblical principles, and the Great Controversy perspective. It will then set forth some ideas on how it could affect the communication of the gospel in the Chinese context. It will attempt to see if Sinolization makes the gospel more relevant or further distorts the Christian message through the lens of the Chinese culture. The answers to these questions should help Chinese Christians, and especially Adventists, better understand their mission in China."
Constructing And Applying Rubrics In College-Level Efl Writing Assessment In China, Chunhui Li
Constructing And Applying Rubrics In College-Level Efl Writing Assessment In China, Chunhui Li
Theses - ALL
Assessment is a critical component in the teaching of writing and plays an important role in discovering and helping to address students’ writing difficulties. Therefore, it is essential for teachers to approach writing assessment in a reliable and valid way. Previous studies showed that assessment rubrics, used as a standard to describe performance evaluation, can help teachers effectively assess student writing. The reliability and validity of the use of rubrics for helping teachers in assessing writing fairly and improving students’ writing ability has received much research attention; however, less attention has been paid to teacher training in the area of …
Taiwanese Comedies Under The Shadow Of The Chinese Market, James N. Udden
Taiwanese Comedies Under The Shadow Of The Chinese Market, James N. Udden
Cinema & Media Studies Faculty Publications
Comedy is arguably the most local of genres. Tropical Fish (1995) is a Taiwanese comedy that made no effort to disguise its local flavour, and was largely unseen outside of Taiwan. Recent Taiwanese comedies such as You Are the Apple of My Eye (2011), The Wonderful Wedding (2015) and Our Times (2015) have achieved not only success in Taiwan, but also unprecedented box office in the mainland Chinese market. Compared to Tropical Fish, all three films also seemingly tone down the local flavour to varying degrees. This is due to the irresistible pull of recent opportunities posed by the …
The Importance Of State Intervention In Improving Gender Inequality In China, Jenny Cheng
The Importance Of State Intervention In Improving Gender Inequality In China, Jenny Cheng
Honors Theses
Over the last century, China has undergone a tremendous amount of change. For women, these changes have brought unprecedented rights and opportunities. The state plays a critical role in the status of women in China and this is shown in the accomplishments that the Chinese government has achieved regarding women's rights. To understand gender disparity in China, it is important to understand traditional customs and rituals, traditional ideologies, and the traditional roles that the state used to play in the subordination women in ancient Chinese society. However, enormous changes have occurred in the last century. The fall of the last …

From Proletariat To Past Glory: Nationalism's Evolution In Modern China, Lance Ekelund
Master's Projects and Capstones
Despite the rapid success of its growth over the past four decades, the People’s Republic of China is facing new political, economic and societal problems. In these turbulent times of change and upheaval, nationalism has re-emerged as a significant force within China, spearheaded by the new regime under President Xi Jinping. This paper examines how a more offensive-oriented nationalism and several subcategories of nationalism are slowly seeping into the aforementioned aspects of modern China. It argue that unlike the defensive nationalism that China adopted over a century ago, this new wave of offensive nationalism is tied directly to the desire …

The Open Door, Dollar Diplomacy, And The Self-Strengthening Movement: The Birth Of American Idealist Imperialism In China, 1890 - 1912, Frederic Poag
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
American Foreign Policy at the outset of the Twentieth century evolved from a realist to an idealist position as the United States transitioned to an imperial power. This ideal framework was formed in the crucible of China during the Spheres of Influence and the Open Door. The US had to play delicate game of helping China to maintain their territorial, and administrative integrity while at the same time protecting their newly acquired overseas interests against more established imperial actors. While there were many missteps, and failures during this transition perhaps the most the important result was the change toward the …
Friend Or Foe: Perceptions Of China In Africa, Shahn M. Savino
Friend Or Foe: Perceptions Of China In Africa, Shahn M. Savino
Student Publications
China's rush to Africa for resources and a sphere of influence has inspired much debate in the academic world. Many western scholars generalize China's Africa strategy or African perceptions of that strategy. These are both grave mistakes. While China's objectives in Africa are the same all over, the way it achieves that strategy varies from nation to nation. In addition, African perceptions of China vary from nation to nation. Using Algeria and Niger as main case studies, this paper will show that the wealth of a nation changes the way that the Chinese government and Chinese nationals interact with that …

This paper looks at the politics of teaching sexuality education, healthy and comprehensive focusing on issues specific to female sexuality, in the context of a Chinese university ELL classroom. Through feminist pedagogical approaches and feminist beliefs in healthy sexuality, this article explores how a university ELL classroom was transformed. As with their U.S. peers, many Chinese young people rely on unhealthy and inaccurate information about human sexuality through pornography or dubious internet searches. Through feminist pedagogical approaches that focus on student-centered learning, critical thinking, and open debate, teachers can integrate controversial topics into a classroom setting to benefit the health …

Retailing and Tourism Management Faculty Publications
An enormous number of Internet users have made China a profitable e-commerce marketplace, and clothing is one of the most frequently purchased items. This study explores the predictors of consumers’ motivation to buy clothing online in China by extending the technology acceptance model. Data were collected via an online questionnaire, resulting in 504 returned responses. The results indicate that perceived usefulness has a significant effect on consumers’ intention to buy clothing online; however, no direct relationship between perceived ease of use and buying intention was found. Furthermore, perceived convenience, perceived money saving, and perceived time-saving can explain why consumers perceive …

China's Soft Power Aims In South Asia: Experiences Of Nepalese Students In China's Internationalization Of Higher Education, Romi Jain
ETD Archive
Internationalization of higher education is a major characteristic of China's higher education policy. Accordingly, the Chinese government is fervently encouraging the spread of Chinese language and culture through Confucius Institutes, student exchange programs, recruitment of international students, and international collaborations. South Asia is no exception to China's higher education outreach. Against this background, this qualitative study examined experiences of South Asian students with regard to China's higher education program(s) in relation to the explicit and implicit aims of China's soft power policy. Soft power refers to the power of attraction and co-optation, which is based on a nation's intangible resources …
