Through the utilization of Light Detection and Ranging data, one can compile 3-dimensional models that can be used to spot anomalies of historical interest. These anomalies, if recognizable by the trained eye, can then be used to geo-reference historic maps to gain a better understanding of historic sites as well as to reveal possible areas of interests or unknown features.
By using a 3-dimensional model compiled by LiDAR data, I was able to geo-reference a December 13th, 1861 map of the Civil War defenses for the town of Smithland, Kentucky. Through this process, I have been able to …

KINCAID MOUNDS - A Comparative Analysis of Non-invasive Exploration Techniques is a journal of my efforts to conduct non-invasive site investigations at the Kincaid Mounds Archaeological site in Southern Illinois. Through the utilization of tools such as; drones, photography, satellite imaging, light distance and ranging, and powerful analysis software, I will demonstrate a number of useful techniques which one can utilize to conduct independent site investigations without disturbing a sites landscape or structural integrity. Thus, illustrating differences between those techniques and pointing out their strengths and weaknesses in their various applications.
During this journey, I will also venture into the …

Drone Photography vs. Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) Data — Which Source is Best Utilized in 3-Dimensional Modeling Applications? is an evaluation essay comparing the analysis and modeling of both drone photography and LiDAR data. This paper gives a brief introduction into my choice of utilization between these two techniques, both of which were applied to 3-dimensional modeling of the Kincaid Mounds Archaeological site in southern Illinois. Thus, illustrating some of the advantages and disadvantages associated with both methods.

One aspect of remote sensing applied to archaeology is through the utilization of aerial photography. Some of the first records of aerial photographs being applied to the discipline of archaeology date back to the late 1920’s. One such example was a series of photographs taken by the famous pilot Col. Charles Lindberg. Col. Lindberg, who was actually fascinated with the field of archaeology, made a series of flights taking photographs of the Chaco Canyon in New Mexico as well as Maya ruins in both Mexico and Guatemala.
Since, archaeology has become a science that can be conducted from both aloft …

Andrew Jackson And The Indian Removal Act Of 1830 Personal Agenda Or Territorial Expansion, Austin Valentine
Student Scholarship & Creative Works
For well over a century, historians have pondered Andrew Jackson’s motivation behind the Indian Removal Act of 1830. Was Andrew Jackson’s decision for a massive social cleansing of Native Americans motivated by a personal agenda or by American calls for westward expansion?
Through a brief analysis of Andrew Jackson’s long and winding road to the White House, I hope to shed light on Andrew Jackson and his call for the forced removal of Native American inhabitants residing east of the Mississippi River. With such, I hope to give the reader a better understanding of Jackson’s attitude, military strategies, calls for …

The purpose of this paper is to examine the extent to which the 2016-2017 National Association of Schools of Music Handbook adequately promotes the instruction of research-based behaviors demonstrated to improve effectiveness in choral conducting. A review of the Bachelor of Music Education, Master of Music in Choral Conducting, and Master of Music Education degrees will be presented identifying which standards and expectations are currently being promoted by NASM. The seven areas of teacher behaviors identified by the research focusing on effectiveness in choral conducting will be introduced and compared with those NASM standards and expectations. Following the comparison, potential …

Prosthesis, Matthew Quin
Murray State Theses and Dissertations
“Prosthesis” is a collection of short fiction that explores, primarily, loss. Whether it’s the loss of a friend, the devastation in the wake of a failed marriage, or the emptiness that occurs when one’s overriding personal philosophy is suddenly suspect, the protagonists in each of the stories in this collection put themselves on trial, post-loss, and struggle to metabolize their new realities. The stories in this collection aren’t looking for answers, but rather to add to the rich history of self-aware literature that has preceded it; that life has no certainty, is never static; that the only way to effectively …
