Turbulent National Identity In Laos: The Hmong Ethnic Group As A Case Study, Dewi Hermawati Resminingayu
Turbulent National Identity In Laos: The Hmong Ethnic Group As A Case Study, Dewi Hermawati Resminingayu
Paradigma: Jurnal Kajian Budaya
Since the independence, Laos has changed its national identity based on different principles namely Buddhism, Socialism and Consolidation between Buddhism and Socialism. These changes have given dynamic impacts to the identity of the people not only from their political life but also from socio-cultural life. This paper will specifically discuss the impacts undergone by the Hmong as one of the ethnic minorities that are often excluded from the discussion of ethnic groups in Laos. The discussion uses three approaches of ethnicity, namely Primordialism, Instrumentalism, and Constructivism in order to explain the dynamic identity of the Hmong. This paper argues that …

Representasi Sipil-Militer Dan Konstruksi Maskulinitas Pada Film Jenderal Soedirman (2015), Hary Ganjar Budiman, Kunto Sofianto
Paradigma: Jurnal Kajian Budaya
Jenderal Soedirman (2015) is a historical film that reveals the story of General Soedirman during the guerrilla war to maintain the Indonesia’s independence. The film was sponsored directly by the army (Kartika Eka Paksi Foundation and TNI) and involved the army in its making process. Therefore, the historical representation of this film is a history from the army’s point of view. Referring to Gramsci, a film can be seen as a hegemonic apparatus that contributes to the process of negotiating the interests of dominant groups. This study attempted to elaborate such representations of civil-military relationships and masculinity construction contained in …

Tweet!! Persidangan Burung Singapura, Harry Aveling
Paradigma: Jurnal Kajian Budaya
Religions have become the main topics in the novels by a prolific Singaporean author, Isa Kamari (born in 1960). His understanding and interpretation of religions have begun to develop with the writing of his first novel Satu Bumi (One Earth) in 1998. His latest novel, Tweet (2016) was influenced by an allegorical and mystical work, Persidangan Burung (Bird Conference) (c.1177). Two main narratives, one in the form of a physical nature between a grandfather and his grandson in a bird garden in Singapore and the other in the form of a spiritual nature concerning spiritual birds, ran parallel and converged …

Hitam Putih Prri-Permesta: Konvergensi Dua Kepentingan Berbeda 1956–1961, Faishal Hilmy Maulida
Paradigma: Jurnal Kajian Budaya
Regional upheavals that occurred in Sumatra and Sulawesi in the period of 1956–1961 indicated a meeting point between two interests, i.e. the desire of the regions to get rights through regional autonomy and develop power to eradicate communism. This paper aimed at analysing regional upheavals involving PRRI-Permesta in terms of the meeting point between the two different interests. The method used in this study is a historical one. The results showed that the upheavals that arose from certain interests could not be accommodated by the central government, and this made the region take the initiative to solve them with military …

Subculture And Queer Subjectivity, Natalie Woodlock
Subculture And Queer Subjectivity, Natalie Woodlock
University of New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
My work explores subculture as a form of cultural resistance to the dominant ideology. I'm concerned with the ambiguous relationship we occupy as subjects to the material produced by popular culture, and how this is digested and understood by female viewers and cultural outsiders. The specific temporality of the queer subject is a key theme in my work.
Esthétique Environnementale : Art, Écologie Et Politique, Alexandre Melay
Esthétique Environnementale : Art, Écologie Et Politique, Alexandre Melay
The Goose

Older Artists And Acknowledging Ageism, Liz Langdon
Older Artists And Acknowledging Ageism, Liz Langdon
International Journal of Lifelong Learning in Art Education
Intergenerational (IG) learning has the potential to reinforce ageist ideas, through the culturally produced binary of old and young which often describes IG learning. This research with older artists revealed implicit age bias associated with a modernist tradition in art education which minimized the value of art production viewed as feminine. Language associated with ageism shares the descriptors of the feminine and seep into our perceptions. Cooperative action research with multi-age participants facilitated personal growth and through critical reflection, implicit ageism revealed in the researcher’s prior perspective is revealed.
Leaf-Ing A Legacy, Susan R. Whiteland
Leaf-Ing A Legacy, Susan R. Whiteland
International Journal of Lifelong Learning in Art Education
Leaf-ing a Legacy is the story of a university art education class that joined with an elementary classroom and residents in a long term health/rehabilitative center through a service-learning project that utilized digital technology and art making in a problem-based learning format to explore the concept of legacy. Evidence was found that the experience promoted socio-emotional learning and fostered the building of socio-emotional capital for the participants involved.

The Gift Of Art Brightens Baier Hall, Maurer School Of Law - Indiana University
Douglass Boshkoff (1971-1972 Acting; 1972-1975)
Doug Boshkoff knew immediately when he saw it. The oversized print on display at a Chicago art dealership was the perfect fit. Lichtenstein had used a neutral and cool palette and an angular design that would add a splash to even the dullest wall, and Boshkoff — a man of vision and creativity himself — knew that the Law School’s main lobby would serve as the perfect display space for the vivid print.
In September, the Boshkoff family attended the unveiling of “Imperfect Series,” a 1988 print by the American pop artist, which hangs just outside the entrance to the …

Technique For The Developing Dramatic Soprano, Amber James
Dissertations
This dissertation was inspired by a Facebook post by David L. Jones regarding common pedagogical problems in the dramatic soprano Fach. I am a dramatic soprano, who has dealt with many of the technical problems listed in his post. David L. Jones is an internationally recognized teacher and coach and has worked with some of the most well-known professional dramatic sopranos. After considering these pedagogical challenges, it was decided the best course of action was to interview professional singers, teachers, and coaches in the dramatic soprano Fach. After conducting a state of research, it was found that there …
The Challenges And Limitations Of Adapting Mozart's Così Fan Tutte For A Small University Setting, Christopher Lovely
The Challenges And Limitations Of Adapting Mozart's Così Fan Tutte For A Small University Setting, Christopher Lovely
Dissertations
In this dissertation, challenges and limitations related to presenting Così fan tutte within a small university setting are conveyed, as well as offering innovative ideas to create a manageable presentation. I recall my personal experience as Korepititor/Vocal Coach for The University of Southern Mississippi’s 2014 production of Mozart’s Così fan tutte. This document presents topics on the various workings of an opera production: pre-rehearsal preparation, language issues, rehearsal preparation, selection of singers, and production issues. It offers practical solutions to overcome various challenges a small university may encounter. Smaller university opera programs were surveyed regarding their adaptations of …
Enacting A Third Space Pedagogy In An Art Museum Setting: Strategies, Intersections, And Values, Claudia Patricia Orjuela Borda
Enacting A Third Space Pedagogy In An Art Museum Setting: Strategies, Intersections, And Values, Claudia Patricia Orjuela Borda
Theses and Dissertations
This ethnographic case study investigates the theory and practice of third spaces in relation to a
professional development program for K-12 teachers in an art museum setting, with emphasis on
arts-based programming, lived curriculum, contemporary art, and critical teaching strategies. I
investigate how museums negotiate the transition from a pedagogy of place towards a pedagogy
of third spaces. The questions guiding my study were: how a third space is valued by educators
and museum staff? What are the components, strategies, and methodologies that allow for the
emergence of third spaces in professional development programs? What does a third space
pedagogy …
The Study Of Culturally Relevant Visual Imagery And Student Interest In Contemporary Secondary Art Classrooms, Carly Marie Anderson
The Study Of Culturally Relevant Visual Imagery And Student Interest In Contemporary Secondary Art Classrooms, Carly Marie Anderson
MSU Graduate Theses
Contemporary art pedagogy indicates some educators are using visual cultural exemplars that contain little cultural relevance to many students in their secondary art classrooms. The purpose of this study was to investigate students’ preferences and interests concerning visual imagery as the focus of curricular content in current secondary art classrooms in Southwest Missouri. This investigation began with a review of visual imagery within traditional fine art academies and what role this imagery plays in contemporary art rooms. The research question included: Were current secondary art students more interested in contemporary, culturally relevant imagery or traditional Eurocentric Western fine art imagery? …

The Spark Of Recovery: Artistic Methods That Generate Dialogue And Reduce Stigma In Families Affected By Mood Disorders, Adara Jensen
The Spark Of Recovery: Artistic Methods That Generate Dialogue And Reduce Stigma In Families Affected By Mood Disorders, Adara Jensen
Masters Theses
Mood disorders, such as major depression and bipolar disorder negatively affect family dynamics, often resulting in trauma, antipathy, mistrust, and the breakdown in communication between the individual suffering from mood disorder and members of his or her family. The impact of mood disorder on family members impedes recovery for the person suffering from the disorder as well as the health and well-being of the family as a whole. Even emotionally healthy families suffer from the subsequent pain, trauma, isolation, and stigma. The project proposes a solution to broken or inhibited family communication: the engagement of all family members in healing …

Vision Boards – Redefining Your Journey Through Visualization, Laura Marotta, Eleena Rioux
Violence Against Women conference
Women who have been through trauma, specifically violence or abusive situations, often feel a lack of control, which can permeate into their lives, even after post-treatment therapy and services. After a traumatic experience, we often need to retrain our brains and hearts by engaging with interests that are within our sphere of control. One of the most powerful activities that can aid in this transition is art-making. Making art can be a very personal, expressive, non-threatening and empowering experience. This workshop will take you through the journey of creating your own vision board, using basic art materials. Many start-ups and …
Creating Coping Mechanism: An Anatomy Of A Gallery-Based Installation And Performance Work, Jamie M. Kutner
Creating Coping Mechanism: An Anatomy Of A Gallery-Based Installation And Performance Work, Jamie M. Kutner
LSU Master's Theses
The project described in this paper is an exhibition of gallery-based durational performance art, and resulting three-dimensional artifacts, that was created through a tangled process of relapse and recovery from mental illness. The first section of this paper peers into the parameters of ephemeral artistic practice. I discuss the process of merging my recovery and creative practice through performance art, and then parse the discussion of the work into the categories of performer, audience, site, and time. Section II details various aspects of spectator experience through a second-person narrative tracing the crowd flow of the exhibition. I conclude with an …

An Artful Habitat:Creating An Environment For Divergent Expression, Marilyn Edna Bambrough
An Artful Habitat:Creating An Environment For Divergent Expression, Marilyn Edna Bambrough
Theses and Dissertations
Over the last century, teaching techniques and philosophies have changed extensively in the art classroom. Teaching methods have spanned a range that stretches from highly rigid, to self-expressive, more learner centered approaches. In recent years, there has been a resurgence of interest and research regarding the role of creativity in visual art education. This research project focused on the qualities of effective art instruction using elements from a number of historical ideologies, with the intent to study creative development in students. The research used a case-study methodology informed by a reflective, action research methodology. Research was used to determine effective …
