Reactions, Reflections, And Responsibility: A Responsive Evaluation Of An Emerging Blended E-Learning Subject, Peter W. Kilgour, Phil Fitzsimmons
Peter Kilgour
In the decade since Schrum and Hong’s comment that “online learning has rapidly become a popular method of edu - cation for traditional and non-traditional students,” this approach to tertiary learning has morphed through several generational forms and platforms to the point where it has become firmly entrenched in the Australian tertiary landscape. As a broad generalization, e-learning, online, or flexible learning in many universities represents a spectrum of “information communications technology” (hereafter referred to as ICT) usage that ranges from little or no actual real-time interaction or “face-to-face” contact with associated viewing linkages such as YouTube through to teaching …

An Analysis Of The Responses To Open-Ended Questions In The Solomon Islands' Survey, Sherry J. Hattingh
Sherene Hattingh
This chapter reports the results of a survey conducted to determine how workers in Seventh-day Adventist educational institutions in the Solomon Islands perceive the mission of the church and how they believe their educational institution is different from other similar educational institutions.
An Analysis Of The Responses To Open-Ended Questions In The Australian Survey, Sherry J. Hattingh
An Analysis Of The Responses To Open-Ended Questions In The Australian Survey, Sherry J. Hattingh
Sherene Hattingh
This chapter reports the qualitative results of two questions from a survey administered to educational workers in Seventh-day Adventist institutions in Australia. The two questions addressed the Australian workers’ perception of the mission of the church through their institution and how their educational institution is different from similar educational institutions.

Are you searching for fresh opportunities to support literacy through reader response activities? Batchelder Awards and international stories are relatively untapped resources that offer a global approach for children to expand comprehension through tales from many nations. Pairing these stories with reader response exercises provides an outstanding opportunity for collaboration with social studies and language arts teachers. Handouts will be provided. (F4-E162)
Theological Foundations Of Pastoral Care In Catholic Universities, Thomas V. Gourlay
Theological Foundations Of Pastoral Care In Catholic Universities, Thomas V. Gourlay
Thomas V. Gourlay
One defining element of life in any Catholic educational institution, whether it be primary, secondary, or tertiary, is the focus on pastoral care for staff and students. This paper provides a distinctly Catholic definition of the term ‘pastoral care’ and briefly examines the theological foundations that underpin this concept, particularly, in relation to its application in the Catholic university. The paper traces the motif of pastoral care through the Scriptures and, building on insights from St. Pope John Paul II’s Apostolic Constitution on Catholic Universities, Ex Corde Ecclesiae (1990) and the broader theological anthropology of the Vatican II Council. The …

Independent Christian Colleges And Universities, William Vance Trollinger
Independent Christian Colleges And Universities, William Vance Trollinger
William Vance Trollinger Jr.
The category independent Christian colleges and universities is not a very large one. The reason for this is rather simple: as William Ringenberg has noted in the introduction to his helpful 1988 bibliography on such schools, "there are not many contemporary colleges and universities that are both continuing Christian in philosophical orientation and independent of denominational ties in governance." While this may change in the future, given the weakening of denominational loyalties among American Protestants, the fact remains that there are not too many independent Christian colleges.
For purposes of this essay I will I be looking at fourteen institutions. …
When Technology Is Too Hot, Too Cold Or Just Right, Jonathan Howell
When Technology Is Too Hot, Too Cold Or Just Right, Jonathan Howell

Many instructors acknowledge the importance of quantitative literacy in non-STEM fields and may themselves use advanced tools for data analysis, statistics and visualization. But how, if at all, does an instructor introduce quantitative methods into the classroom without overwhelming and disengaging students who may have been drawn to the field precisely because it has not traditionally required any skill or interest in science, technology, engineering or math? I present a model of iterative assignment design illustrated by the evolution of a phonetic exercise in which students are asked to measure vowels from their own speech and to plot their measurements …
The Influence Of Feminist Pedagogy On Student Participation And Student Perception Of Learning Environment In Distance Education: A Comparative Study Of Web-Based Graduate Distance Education Courses, Tammy R. Johnson
Tammy R. Johnson
The purpose of this study was to determine if a relationship existed between the level of feminist pedagogy employed in a course and student participation or student perception in that course. The study attempted to measure the level of feminist pedagogy employed in eight randomly selected, web-based distance education courses using a researcher-created instrument: The Feminist Pedagogy Scoring Rubric. Additionally, student perception of learning environment in each course was analyzed through the use of the Distance and Open Learning Environment Scale (DOLES). The rate of student participation in each course was determined by analyzing archived online communications. Four main tenets …
