Attending Study Abroad In Vienna, Austria, Zachary Adamson, Dr. Scott Holden Jun 2017

Attending Study Abroad In Vienna, Austria, Zachary Adamson, Dr. Scott Holden

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Throughout my life, music has been a source for mental development, spiritual growth and enjoyment. It has been at times both exciting and discouraging. As I completed my project, however, and engaged in the struggle to understand music, perform music and connect with others around me, I developed a greater vision of how music unifies the human experience, creating a positive influence on society. Specifically, I learned that valuing the arts is extremely advantageous for a society, and Vienna is a case in point; I learned specific techniques in piano playing, a kind of common legacy and style shared by …

My project proposal was to compose and perform a sacred work for choir, soloists, piano, and select instruments in the Classical music style using text concerning the coming of Christ to the Nephites in the Book of Mormon and written in English, Spanish, and German. Changing Musical Canon In Depauw Piano Recitals, Eric Heaton May 2017

Changing Musical Canon In Depauw Piano Recitals, Eric Heaton

Student Research

In the present day, it is easy to imagine the tried-and-true simplicity of the current formula for piano recitals as something that must have always existed. A piano recital is expected to cover specific styles, genres, and composers, with a predictable framework to tie everything together. However, history reveals a wider and more varied offering of pieces, composers, and performers that could be presented in any configuration on a recital. This variety constitutes nearly half the history of the piano recital, but is not well known today. In the present directive of looking to the future for something new as …

Beijing Opera Elements In Qigang Chen’S Piano Concerto Er Huang, Funa Wang May 2017

Beijing Opera Elements In Qigang Chen’S Piano Concerto Er Huang, Funa Wang

Dissertations

Beijing opera (known as jingju in Chinese) dates back to 1790 and is the most famous traditional Chinese regional opera of some 335 different styles, combining music, vocal performance, dance, and acrobatics. Originally considered vulgar by the court, Beijing opera became especially popular with the Qing dynasty court in its later days (1884-1910), thus raising its status at the beginning of the twentieth century to a ‘national opera.’ Furthermore, it has become an important nationalistic and traditional element in Chinese contemporary music.

Qigang Chen studied and lived in Europe for long time and is proficient in Western compositional techniques. On …

A Relational Analysis Of Pedagogical Methods For Accordion, Electronic Keyboard, Organ, And Piano, Brian Berlin May 2017

A Relational Analysis Of Pedagogical Methods For Accordion, Electronic Keyboard, Organ, And Piano, Brian Berlin

Masters Theses

While it is expected that musicians specialize in a single area, like piano, a complete keyboard education should also incorporate experiences on all keyboard instruments. There is no single method that teaches multiple keyboard instruments simultaneously. Willard Palmer, Bill Hughes, Morton Manus, and Amanda Vick Lethco co-wrote independent courses of instruction for different keyboard instruments: accordion, electronic keyboard, organ, and piano. However, no guide to align the material exists. This study establishes objective criteria for aligning these courses and provides a cross-reference tool. The samples chosen for analysis include: Alfred’s Basic Piano Library, Palmer-Hughes Accordion Course, Palmer-Hughes Spinet Organ Course, …

America's Discovery Of The Arts After The Industrial Revolution: The Evolution Of The Middle Class Through Music, Rachel Blizzard

The Research and Scholarship Symposium (2013-2019)

Music in nineteenth century America was greatly influenced by the Industrial Revolution and brought about changes in society through the development of concert life, the introduction of the piano in the home, and the new role women were given in music. This paper seeks to address how the middle class in America drastically changed from exposure to music. This exposure occurred through the formation of the classical concert in Europe that spread to America and promoted an awareness for the arts. It also caused more families to incorporate music into their daily lives through the growing affordability and popularity of …
