This is the program from the Fall 2017 Steel Bands concert directed by Dr. Ryan Lewis and featuring Tiger Steel and Pan Jouvet. Tiger Steel, the OBU steel drum ensemble, specializes in the performance of calypso and soca music from the Caribbean nations of Trinidad and Tobago—the birthplace of steel drums—but also performs a wide variety of styles from jazz, pop, and rock to classical, funk, and Latin. Pan Jouvet, the beginning steel drum ensemble, is open to all OBU students—no audition or musical experience is necessary. FOR PROGRAMS WITH A SINGLE TEACHER

The primary purpose of this study was to find the best methods for developing students into total percussionists in beginning band programs with only one band director on staff. A total percussionist is defined as one who is capable of playing keyboard percussion, snare drum, timpani, and the accessory instruments. The study consists of a survey to assess individual approaches to percussion instruction in beginning band.

Ouachita Baptist University will host Tiger Steel, the university’s steel drum ensemble, in concert in Mabee Fine Arts Center’s McBeth Recital Hall on Monday, May 1, at 7:30 p.m. Admission is free and open to the public.

“Steel band music makes people smile, which is one of the most powerful reasons to perform music,” said Dr. Ryan Lewis, OBU associate professor of music and director of the ensemble.
