Cymatics, is derived from a Greek word, meaning "wave", is a subset of modal vibrational phenomena. The term was coined by Hans Jenny, a Swiss follower of the philosophical school known as anthroposophy. This is a visual representation of the frequency field. I created this piece from acrylic on canvas based on the subtle energies I can see and feel.
Gary Brewer - Dark Matter Series, Gary Brewer
Gary Brewer - Dark Matter Series, Gary Brewer
The STEAM Journal
In the Dark Matter series of paintings I am abstracting images from NASA’s efforts to map dark matter using the Hubble Space Telescope. From these abstractions I create diaphanous veils of blue that convey a sense of movement; the movement suggests primal forces: wind, water air and fire.
The figure in the foreground is one of the elements: gold, copper, silver, which develop into a variety of fantastic shapes. The ‘elements’ which are the foundation of life on earth, are born in the heart of a star and explode out into the universe upon its death and collapse. The force …
Zipper Landscape, Richard Morris
Zipper Landscape, Richard Morris
Richard Morris
Zipper Landscape is a thin horizontal delineation of painted fragments constituting a striking similarity to a horizon line view of the landscape. This linear configuration is dependent upon two key elements. The first is the numerous pieces of painted plywood components constituting the horizontal format, and secondly, the thick impasto butyl rubber extrusions in the form of painted lines which inhabit approximately four of the components. The collective effect of both elements, is the palpable depiction of a distant landscape typography. Unlike Tony Cragg’s assemblages mentioned above, Zipper Landscape is more dependent upon the traditional notion of a painted line …
Understory, Andy Collis, Richard Morris, Maria Watson-Trudgett
Understory, Andy Collis, Richard Morris, Maria Watson-Trudgett
Richard Morris
The work ‘Understory’ investigates the notion of ‘Land’ as seen through the eyes of one Indigenous and two non-Indigenous artists. The work fuses two distinct approaches to Landscape painting traditionally at odds with one another. The first of these is the traditional Aboriginal ‘Dot’ painting technique, and the second encompasses the more Euro-centric approach of ‘En Plein air’ and ‘Allaprima’ painting. ‘Understory’ fuses these disparate approaches to landscape painting, in such a way that no hierarchy of styles prevails. Here the notion of Reconciliation becomes quite literally embedded in the physicality of the work, whereby, culturally and historically different approaches …

Sculpture 27 is a group exhibition which has been curated by Robin Gibson from the Robin Gibson Gallery. The primary focus of the exhibition is sculptural works by the gallery artists, and invited artists both Australian and International. Sculpture continues to play an important role in Australian art, as can be seen in the regular inclusion of sculpture in curated exhibitions at MOCA and the AGNSW, and NGA to name a few. The work Puff which I contributed to the exhibition is an assemblage made largely of painted plywood panels, and incorporated found objects.
Hover, Richard Morris
Hover, Richard Morris
Richard Morris
The painting Hover in the exhibition Well Red, was formed by deconstructing pre-painted panels, into rectilinear modular units which were re-assembled to form the works’ final configuration. This methodology for constructing paintings involves discreet stages of production beginning with the painting of panels in enamels and oils prior to cutting them into smaller rectilinear components with a table saw and a guillotine. These rectilinear components are then assembled into configurations indebted to the new relationships and tensions amongst the works’ component parts. By utilising the compositional opportunities afforded by a horizontal grid, along with painterly variations inherent in the panels …
Channel, Richard Morris
Channel, Richard Morris
Richard Morris
The painting Channel - enamel and butyl rubber on plywood 36cm x 32cm in the exhibition Richard Morris Paintings 2015 exhibited at ASW Art Systems Wickham, Newcastle., was formed by deconstructing pre-painted panels, into narrow rectilinear units, which have been re-assembled into a horizontally stacked rectilinear configuration. By utilising a strictly horizontal assembly or ‘stack’ of painted ‘splinters’ of plywood, each with distinct variation in both colour and texture, the work entails a type of stratification, suggestive of a landscape ‘field.’ Such notions can be seen to stem from a similar structuring configuration in the horizontal bands of earth, water …
Dice & Shell, Andy Collis, Richard Morris
Dice & Shell, Andy Collis, Richard Morris
Richard Morris
The process of art-making, particularly in the Western World, tends to be, with some notable exceptions, the practice of the individual; a singular artist expressing individual ideas in a visual form. Collis and Morris are two artists that have worked and exhibited extensively individually in their own individualistic ways of expression. Collis is, generally, a figurative painter in acrylic and oils, working, usually, from the live motif; Morris is, generally, an abstract painter whose works often crossover into sculptural forms. In a broader area of research, they have ventured to examine the value and means of joining forces to both …

Collaborations amongst artists have a rich International history in the Visual Arts. Collaboration amongst Indigenous, and non-Indigenous artists in Australia is a notion with a much smaller history. Such collaborations have become a special annual focus of the Gosford Regional Art Gallery as a means of showcasing artworks about Reconciliation, as it has impacted Australian culture and politics from the historic 1967 Referendum, and later, in the High Court Mabo decision. This group of three collaborators were successful in having work hung in last year’s Reconciliation, and continue to explore the collaborative exercise again here.
Bower, Richard Morris
Bower, Richard Morris
Richard Morris
The work Bower which Richard Morris exhibited in Sculpture 28 is an assemblage made largely of painted wooden panels, and remnants of domestic furniture. There is a distinct relationship between the blue perimeter of the work, and the yellow oval form in the upper RHS, which play on the enclosed form of a literal Bower bird nest. The juxtaposition of a reductive palette plays a significant role in the work, creating a distinct asymmetrical compositional tension between the use of metallic blue, and yellow. Bower has both a figurative reference to a vertically oriented Bower bird nest, and a reference …
Searching For The Sublime, Kheng Saik Lim
Searching For The Sublime, Kheng Saik Lim
Theses and Dissertations
The influential philosophers Edmund Burke and Emmanuel Kant understand the sublime as events and objects that cause an emotional reaction so magnificent that the intellect fails to comprehend it. It is thus deeply felt and experienced but remains undefined and non-understood. Searching for the Sublime is a suite of paintings that seek to respond to these definitions of the sublime. Together they address and evoke themes of mystery, fear, power, and the unknowable through the medium of painting.
Private Matter
SIGNED: The Magazine of The Hong Kong Design Institute
The artist Christopher Le Brun came to HKDI in September to share his idea that art is quintessentially private, rooted in emotion and that artists must have the courage to keep their work alive even if the world does not yet appreciate their vision.
Painting With Scissors
SIGNED: The Magazine of The Hong Kong Design Institute
During the summer months a seven foot tall calligraphy brush drew the eyes of visitors to the HKDI campus and led them to work by Wu GuanZhong (吳冠中, 1919-2010), a Chinese painter who is suddenly back in vogue as a new generation of artists appraise his contribution to contemporary art.

Facets of Pain
By Samantha Shepard
This painting is a depiction of the emotions evoked by my journey with chronic pain. In the fall of 2009, I experienced an injury leaving me disabled for four years, I lost many things that day including my so-called identity as a young able bodied person. Though my journey with chronic pain was arduous, and at times, seemed endless, I continued to walk along my path to recovery, and today I am a successful premedical student at the University of New England working to pursue an education in osteopathy.
I often describe chronic pain …

This research analyzes the dialogue between literature and painting; specifically the convergence of aesthetic practices generated through ekphrasis. This study addresses the question of the role of ekphrasis in Hispanic literature, emphasizing the features and significance of the pictorial record in each fictional work. The research starts by delving into the theoretical discussion that has arisen around ekphrasis, in order to propose a definition that fits the needs of the investigation. It analyzes Las siete cabritas by Elena Poniatowska; specifically the narratives addressed to Frida Kahlo, Maria Izquierdo and Nahui Olin. The objective of this article is to examine the …
Realizing Urban Water Pollution Impact In Melbourne, Australia Through Painting, Gregory Suplinskas
Realizing Urban Water Pollution Impact In Melbourne, Australia Through Painting, Gregory Suplinskas
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
Throughout the month of November 2016, I undertook a creative environmental art project in Melbourne, Australia. I chose to create a water-soluble oil painting (dimensions 3 ft. x 4 ft.) that represents water pollution problems in the city of Melbourne, particularly in Port Phillip Bay. These problems include toxic stormwater runoff, plastics pollution and plastic nurdles, as well as nutrient buildup and algal overgrowth. The painting includes messages regarding sustainability; sustainable action limits the use of our natural resources so that humans can preserve the environment for future generations rather than degrade it. In the painting, I combine conceptual and …

This thesis contains two distinct chapters as well as a section of photographs of my paintings. The first chapter is a comprehensive artist statement that outlines my approach to image making using Heewon Chang’s autoethnographic method. This approach emphasizes cultural analysis and interpretation of the researcher’s behaviours, thoughts, and experiences in relation to others in society. Chapter two is a case study on the artist, John Brown. In addition to being a significant influence on my practice, Brown and I are both deeply concerned with representations of the body in contemporary painting as well as the formal capabilities of paint. …

Hovering, Benjamin J. Blatt
Masters Theses
Hovering is an attempt to navigate the contemporary digital environment through traditional means. The imagery created function as paintings, photographs, prints, and drawings. They explore and raise questions about visual perception and sensory awareness, as well as highlighting the modular limitations of the pixelated image and the illusion of reality in the digital landscape.
Summoning The Body That Acts, Brendan M. Mccauley
Summoning The Body That Acts, Brendan M. Mccauley
Masters Theses
Seven series of artworks; painted, drawn and performed. These works are presented as affective incorporation exercises, that test modes of aesthetic communication in response to varying political contingencies. The constitutive processes used to develop the work also function as a methodology for my own political radicalization. As an artist I am wagering how to talk, as an activist I am preparing to act. The artworks discussed occur at the crossroads of these desires as enactions of futurity within the subjunctive mood.

Celebration of Learning
These recent paintings explore the presence of excitement, energy and adrenaline rush one can capture in a moment. Oil paints have a quality that can make a painting come to life. This lifelike quality is exactly what I strive to capture in a way that allows the viewers to put themselves inside the painting. The inspiration for these paintings came from my own experiences of adventure and risk-taking. The use of foreshortening and distortion helps give the figures a sense of energy and create movement throughout the composition. By portraying the various situations through a warped lens, I believe that …

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
My work depicts female sexual experience, particularly the complexity of the subject and corporeality. The series Pair, examines the notions of individual subjectivity as porous at the site of desire. These images explore moments of sensual experience - moments when the individual subject is destabilized and becomes indistinguishable from another.
Very much like the Chinese brush painting tradition of having the viewer experience the mountain and streams in performative brush strokes, I intend to capture the feeling and expression of the body and communicate the feeling of that sexualized body with a calligraphic mark. Instead of illustrating a figure's features …
