“Windows” Of Time, Part Ii: Documenting Temporal And Embodied Epistemology In Musicians, Lynnsey K. Weissenberger
“Windows” Of Time, Part Ii: Documenting Temporal And Embodied Epistemology In Musicians, Lynnsey K. Weissenberger
Proceedings from the Document Academy
As an extension to the earlier paper “Windows” of Time: Memory, Metaphor, and Storytelling as Documents, this paper examines how those documents both inform and are informed by temporal epistemology and embodied knowledge. They serve to document both temporal and embodied epistemology in the ongoing process of musical knowledge building, in music performance, as well as in teaching and transmission contexts. To illustrate in greater depth how these documents are situated between temporal and embodied knowledge, Irish traditional music examples are drawn from five renowned musicians as a kind of case study. A model representing the documents’ situation and …

Efficient Strategies For Playing The Horn, Jon Allan Holloway
Efficient Strategies For Playing The Horn, Jon Allan Holloway
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
In their pursuit of becoming accomplished performers, horn players spend a great deal of time studying proper brass playing techniques from the great pedagogues. The modern horn is a fairly young instrument (less than two hundred years old) and the most efficient pedagogical approach is still evolving. Because of this, horn players spend a great deal of time studying proper brass playing techniques from the great pedagogues. Books by Philip Farkas, Arnold Jacobs, Raphael Mendez, and more have many theories and exercises on how to breathe, the best way to perfect embouchure development, performance techniques, and more.
Modern pedagogues have …
Ex Nihilo: An Inquiry Into The Nature Of Musical Creation, David Orvek
Ex Nihilo: An Inquiry Into The Nature Of Musical Creation, David Orvek
Senior Research Projects
As of late there has been much interest in the creative process of musical composition. Most studies to date have taken the form of quantitative and/or psychological analyses performed upon composers by researchers who are not themselves composers. In contrast, this project takes a more philosophical and historical approach in that it takes time to reflect upon the context and manner in which music has been composed throughout history. Additionally, this study offers a more personal perspective as it draws information from the author’s own compositional process–as recorded in a composition journal–as well as the thoughts and reflections of composers …
Music And Words: Connecting The Love Of Music With Language, Eileen P. Kennedy, Raymond Torres- Santos
Music And Words: Connecting The Love Of Music With Language, Eileen P. Kennedy, Raymond Torres- Santos
Publications and Research
Children from different cultures have a natural affinity for rhymes, rhythm and music. Imagine if students were able, from the beginning of their education and experiences with academic writing and literacy, to access their unconscious and original selves from which to create their writing. The study of music can help to access this aware, inventive side that can enhance anyone’s writing. As an early childhood writing teacher and a composition teacher, we draw on our experiences with young children with words and music. We examine the relationship between music and words in an effort to bring the primitive drive of …
