James Tissot's And Emile Zola's Shopgirl:The Working Girl As La Parisienne, Elizabeth Pusey Dec 2016

James Tissot's And Emile Zola's Shopgirl:The Working Girl As La Parisienne, Elizabeth Pusey

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis argues for the cultural space of late nineteenth-century Parisian shopgirls as a position of power. The shopgirls' role in society is an ambiguous position connecting fashion consumer culture, class divides, gender and identity perceptions, and the workspace. Using James Tissot's Femme à Paris series, specifically the image Demoiselles de Magasin, and Emile Zola's novel Au Bonheur des Dames as primary sources, I examine the role of the shopgirl as a liminal position within the definition of the iconic 'La Parisienne' woman. By looking at women's work and the role of shopgirls in the boutique and department store …

The Ontology Of Immanence: Arriving At Being In Nan Shepherd's The Living Mountain, Rachel R. Gilman Dec 2016

The Ontology Of Immanence: Arriving At Being In Nan Shepherd's The Living Mountain, Rachel R. Gilman

Theses and Dissertations

In response to the economic and political upheaval of World War I, Scottish Modernism explored the cultural and linguistic changes of a nation trying to identify itself amidst a world-wide conflict. Scholars and critics have considered Nan Shepherd's fiction in this context—focusing on issues of gender, female identity, language, and land—but have yet to look seriously at her work The Living Mountain and its contributions to the Modernist movement. More recently, critics like Louisa Gairn and Robert MacFarlane have called attention to Shepherd's small but powerful text in an ecocritical and philosophical light, reframing her contribution to issues of Scottish …

Quis Tantus Furor? The Servian Question, Gallus, And Orpheus In Georgics 4, Kyle Glenn Merkley Dec 2016

Quis Tantus Furor? The Servian Question, Gallus, And Orpheus In Georgics 4, Kyle Glenn Merkley

Theses and Dissertations

In Servius' commentary, there are two elusive statements concerning the ending of the Georgics. Both of these statements seem to imply that Vergil changed the ending of the Georgics and that the Orpheus epyllion as it now stands was a later edition to the poem. The question of whether or not Servius is correct in this assertion is a central question in Vergilian studies. By focusing on the reception of Orpheus prior to Vergil, the Roman Orpheus of Vergil's time, and Vergil's own use of the Orpheus figure, a potential answer emerges to the Servian question. In order to …

What, Why, And How Much?: The Integration Of Culture In The Secondary Foreign Language Classroom, Danielle Patricia Asay Dec 2016

What, Why, And How Much?: The Integration Of Culture In The Secondary Foreign Language Classroom, Danielle Patricia Asay

Theses and Dissertations

Culture is an integral part of the FL classroom, yet teachers often face difficulties when incorporating it into their curricula. This survey study gathered data from teachers of many different languages, including ASL, all at the secondary level in the state of Utah. The study attempts to describe how secondary FL teachers view the role of culture in language teaching. It also details which models, means, or methods teachers use to communicate culture to their students, as well as the amount of culture included in their lesson planning, instruction, and assessment. Factors that contribute to more culture inclusion in the …

Micronesia's Coming Of Age: The Mormon Role In Returning Micronesia To Self-Rule, Devan Jensen Nov 2016

Micronesia's Coming Of Age: The Mormon Role In Returning Micronesia To Self-Rule, Devan Jensen

Faculty Publications

Mormons, or members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, have a distinguished history of service in the U.S. government. During a forty-year period following World War II, Mormon politicians played vital roles in transitioning several islands in the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands from a quasi-colonial status into the self-governing Federated States of Micronesia. This article briefly traces the complicated transition through the public service of four key Mormon administrators: Elbert D. Thomas, John A. Carver Jr., Stewart L. Udall, and Morris K. Udall. They served respectively as first civilian high commissioner of the Trust Territory, …

Of Mothers, Daughters, And Growing Up The Changing Ties Between The Monastery Einsiedeln And St. Meinrad Since 1850, Fr. Thomas Fassler Osb Nov 2016

Of Mothers, Daughters, And Growing Up The Changing Ties Between The Monastery Einsiedeln And St. Meinrad Since 1850, Fr. Thomas Fassler Osb

Swiss American Historical Society Review

A number of factors in the mid-nineteenth century led the Benedictine monks of Einsiedeln, situated in the Swiss pre-alpine region south of Lake Zurich, to establish a daughter house faraway in the United States. The repeated urging from Catholic bishops plus the eagerness to evangelize new areas, the great need for priests to serve German-speaking Catholic immigrants, and perhaps also a certain search for adventure, all were additional reasons.

Einsiedeln On The Ohio Overseas Migrations Of Einsiedeln People To The United States In The 19th And Early 20th Centuries, Heinz Nauer Nov 2016

Einsiedeln On The Ohio Overseas Migrations Of Einsiedeln People To The United States In The 19th And Early 20th Centuries, Heinz Nauer

Swiss American Historical Society Review

Between 1850 and 1950, more than 3,000 men and women from Einsiedeln went overseas, most of them to the United States. It was not unique since many people also migrated from other regions of Switzerland, and the total migrations of Swiss overseas during that time represented only a very small fraction of the global movement of people in three main directions: from Europe to the Western Hemisphere, from India and southern China to Southeast Asia, and from Russia to the Far East. 1 Despite not being out of the ordinary, it seems useful to explore the history of overseas migrations …

"Einsiedeln Elsewhere": Searching For A Swiss Village In The American City Of Louisville, Kentucky, Susann Bosshard-Kalin

Swiss American Historical Society Review

Louisville on the Ohio, a mid-sized city in Midwest United States , is known to many because of the Kentucky Derby-the horse race rich in tradition happening since 1901 every year, or perhaps because of Bourbon. What has Louisville to do with a village in the midst of Switzerland?

German-Speaking Social And Benevolent Societies In Louisville, C. Robert Ullrich, Victoria A. Ullrich, Jeffrey A. Wright

Swiss American Historical Society Review

The first German-born immigrant to settle m Louisville was Augustus David Ehrich, a mastershoemaker from Konigsberg, Prussia, who arrived in 1817. German immigration to Louisville progressed slowly in the 1820s, and by 1832 only 25 German-born heads of households were living in Louisville.
