Oceans Of Space, Stephanie Steinbrecher '16
Oceans Of Space, Stephanie Steinbrecher '16
EnviroLab Asia
"Oceans of Space" relates my observations of the 2016 EnviroLab Asia Clinic Trip to Singapore and Sarawak, Malaysia. In this meditation, the concept of space serves as a lens to examine assumptions of geopolitical, historical, and philosophical positioning—regionally and globally. At the center of my inquiry is EnviroLab's connection to the Dayak communities in Baram, Sarawak. This region is experiencing dramatic social and ecological change as a result of industrial development. By triangulating my subjective impressions of this space, various knowledge systems, and the qualitative data EnviroLab gathered in Southeast Asia, I aim to untangle some paradoxes that complicate the …
Book Review: Making Media Studies By David Gauntlett, Antonio Lopez
Book Review: Making Media Studies By David Gauntlett, Antonio Lopez
Journal of Media Literacy Education
Making Media Studies is a collection of previously published and updated works by David Gauntlett, including his infamous essay, “Media Studies 2.0.” It explores ways in which the traditional media studies paradigm has been disrupted by prosumers and the practices of everyday people and DIY “makers” who are using the internet to learn, make things and share ideas. He argues that media studies practitioners need to learn from the makers movement to encourage more creativity, design thinking and conversation. Gauntlett positions himself as an optimist and criticizes overly negative approaches to internet culture that he sees as common among media …

"For us today, it’s December 31—a day to look back and look forward. For some of us, it’s a day to ‘resolve’ ourselves with new sets of goals and aspirations—and maybe a prayerful ‘wish’ or two to God for the new year ahead."

The Price Of Being A Trans-Atlantic Hero: Struggles Of A Migrant Mother, Erica C. Davies
The Price Of Being A Trans-Atlantic Hero: Struggles Of A Migrant Mother, Erica C. Davies
Capstones
Migration is a huge part of Filipino culture. Economic hardship often force some Filipinos to leave their home and their families behind in order to provide a sustainable life. This decision has resulted in over 2 million OFWs, or Overseas Filipino Workers, around the globe. OFWs are local heroes, often braving long distances, sub-par working conditions, and long work hours away from their families for months or years at a time to make sure they are properly taken care of. In a world where the 9 to 5 is seen as common practice, the stories of two women show the …
Ketiadaan Padanan Peribahasa Prancis Dalam Bahasa Indonesia, Ismirani Mardelana
Ketiadaan Padanan Peribahasa Prancis Dalam Bahasa Indonesia, Ismirani Mardelana
Paradigma: Jurnal Kajian Budaya
The absence of equivalents is an issue that has always been faced by translators in translating the source text. When translating proverbs, which are loaded with moral and cultural messages, translators are required to be able to transfer the messages appropriately. The different types of proverbs between French and Indonesian are a major cause of translators’ difficulty in finding the equivalents in the form of proverbs. This issue was raised from the author’s own experience in translating French fable by Jean de La Fontaine into Indonesian. By using the theory of Paremi and proverbs types of Bhuvaneswar (2000), French and …

Authorship In Burroughs's Red Night Trilogy And Bowles's Translation Of Moroccan Storytellers, Benjamin J. Heal
Authorship In Burroughs's Red Night Trilogy And Bowles's Translation Of Moroccan Storytellers, Benjamin J. Heal
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In his article "Authorship in Burroughs's Red Night Trilogy and Bowles's Translation of Moroccan Storytellers" Benjamin J. Heal discusses Paul Bowles's and William S. Burroughs's varying interrogation of the constructed nature of authorship. In his study Heal focuses on the publication history of Burroughs's Cities of the Red Night (1981), which was written with considerable collaborative influence and Bowles's translation of illiterate Moroccan storytellers, where his influence over the production and editing of the texts is blurred as are the roles of author and translator. Through an examination of Bowles's and Burroughs's authorship strategies in parallel with an explication of …
Fashion And Female Beat Identity In The Writing Of Jones, Johnson, And Di Prima, Raven J. See
Fashion And Female Beat Identity In The Writing Of Jones, Johnson, And Di Prima, Raven J. See
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In her article "Fashion and Female Beat Identity in the Writing of di Prima, Johnson, and Jones" Raven J. See discusses how the women writers of the Beat Generation have become iconically defined by their fashion choices. Clothing and accessories offer Beat women a means to construct and express their identity and Diane di Prima, Joyce Johnson, and Hettie Jones write about fashion in their narratives of self-creation. Like their male contemporaries, Beat women make style choices that allow them to reject mainstream culture and identify within Beat subculture. However, these women write about their decisions to accept or reject …
The Cultural Translation Of Ginsberg's Howl In Turkey, Erik Mortenson
The Cultural Translation Of Ginsberg's Howl In Turkey, Erik Mortenson
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In his article "The Cultural Translation of Ginsberg's Howl in Turkey" Erik Mortenson examines three Turkish translations of Allen Ginsberg's poem Howl in order to explore the ways in which Ginsberg's poem becomes redeployed in new cultural contexts. Orhan Duru and Ferit Edgü's 1976 translation presents a more politicized Ginsberg that draws on his anti-establishment credentials as a social activist. This comes as little surprise, since in pre-1980 coup Turkey rebellion was thought in purely political terms of right verses left. Hakan Arslan's 1991 update provides a less political and more familiar Ginsberg, in keeping with a society that left …
Bowles's Up Above The World As Beatnik Murder Mystery, Greg Bevan
Bowles's Up Above The World As Beatnik Murder Mystery, Greg Bevan
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In his article "Bowles's Up Above the World as Beatnik Murder Mystery" Greg Bevan discusses Paul Bowles's fourth and final novel, which at the time of its publication was met with mixed reactions from reviewers and its creator alike, and has seen relatively scanty critical attention in the years since. Gena Dagel Caponi perceives in the novel a reflection of Bowles's struggle for control, during the time of its writing, in the face of his wife Jane's terminal illness. Building on this insight, the current essay notes the same tension in the writings of the Beats—a movement with which Bowles …
