Empirical Evaluation Of Metadata For Video Games And Interactive Media, Rachel I. Clarke, Jin Ha Lee, Andrew Perti
Empirical Evaluation Of Metadata For Video Games And Interactive Media, Rachel I. Clarke, Jin Ha Lee, Andrew Perti
School of Information Studies - Faculty Scholarship
Despite increasing interest in and acknowledgment of the significance of video games, current descriptive practices are not sufficiently robust to support searching, browsing, and other access behaviors from diverse user groups. To address this issue, the Game Metadata Research Group at the University of Washington Information School, in collaboration with the Seattle Interactive Media Museum, worked to create a standardized metadata schema. This metadata schema was empirically evaluated using multiple approaches—collaborative review, schema testing, semi-structured user interview, and a large-scale survey. Reviewing and testing the schema revealed issues and challenges in sourcing the metadata for particular elements, determining the level …
Butlers Of The Mohawk Valley: Family Traditions And The Establishment Of British Empire In Colonial New York, Judd David Olshan
Butlers Of The Mohawk Valley: Family Traditions And The Establishment Of British Empire In Colonial New York, Judd David Olshan
Dissertations - ALL
Historians follow those tributaries of early American history and trace their converging currents as best they may in an immeasurable river of human experience. The Butlers were part of those British imperial currents that washed over mid Atlantic America for the better part of the eighteenth century. In particular their experience reinforces those studies that recognize the impact that the Anglo-Irish experience had on the British Imperial ethos in America. Understanding this ethos is as crucial to understanding early America as is the Calvinist ethos of the Massachusetts Puritan or the Republican ethos of English Wiggery. We don't merely suppose …

Perfection, History, And Harmonious Individuality: Herder's Ethical Thought, 1765-1791, Charles Richard Booher
Perfection, History, And Harmonious Individuality: Herder's Ethical Thought, 1765-1791, Charles Richard Booher
Dissertations - ALL
This work is a study of the ethical thought of Johann Gottfried Herder. I examine the development of his ethics from 1765 through 1791. I contend that the earliest texts express a set of ideas that Herder modified and developed throughout the rest of his work. These are a perfectionist conception of the end of human life, a belief in the centrality of history for ethics, a form of naturalism, and a commitment to the idea that every individual ought to blend their characteristic powers into a harmonious whole. The study considers a set of texts in chronological order. I …
Visualizing Words And Knowledge: Arts Of Memory From The Agora To The Computer, Seth D. Long
Visualizing Words And Knowledge: Arts Of Memory From The Agora To The Computer, Seth D. Long
Dissertations - ALL
This dissertation examines rhetoric's fourth canon--the art of memory--tracing its development through the classical, medieval, and early modern periods. It argues that for most of its history, the fourth canon was an art by which words and knowledge were remediated into visual, spatial forms, either in the mind or on the page. And it was this technique of visualization, I argue, that linked the canons of memory and invention throughout history. In contemporary rhetorical theory, however, memory palaces and mnemonic imagery have been replaced with a conception of memory grounded in psychology and critique. I argue that this move away …
Where The Reasons Come From, Aaron Wolf
Where The Reasons Come From, Aaron Wolf
Dissertations - ALL
We have a problem understanding our normative reasons. If there's a reason to do x, we can explain why that reason counts in favor of doing it with the fact that x-ing would be good in some way. But it's also explainable by non-evaluative properties that make x-ing good. Suppose the traffic gives us a reason to leave early for the airport. The deeper reason might be the non-evaluative fact that the traffic would cause us to miss our flight, or it might be the value of making the flight. Although both reasons are perfectly good at the everyday level, …
Orange Zest, Alexandra Bauman
Orange Zest, Alexandra Bauman
Honors Capstone Projects - All
Orange Zest is an entertainment news show, created for CitrusTV to be aired on Orange Television Network in Syracuse. It is completely student-run, written, produced and executed. CitrusTV is the only student-run news station on Syracuse University campus. Production takes place in the studio, in the Watson Theater building. Participating students range from freshman to seniors, in all majors and schools. This show was created as the first entertainment news-show on campus. Students report on entertainment-based and cultural events on campus, in the city, and those which are relevant and newsworthy around the country. Orange Zest began September 2014, and …

“The I-81 Project: Then And Now” – A Documentary Tracing Interstate 81’S History And Potential Future In Syracuse, Kristen Eskow
Honors Capstone Projects - All
“The I-81 Project: Then and Now” is a documentary regarding the history of Interstate 81 in Syracuse and the ongoing debate regarding the highway’s future in the city. Interstate 81 was built on top of the 15th ward, a neighborhood that was mostly demolished around the time the highway’s bridges were first built in the 1960s. Today, as these bridges reach the age of 50, the New York State Department of Transportation has decided that it is time to replace them. However, several different options are on the table for the new I-81 in Syracuse, including a boulevard replacing …
Women Breaking Ground: A Website Profiling Women Entrepreneurs In Syracuse, Jill Comoletti
Women Breaking Ground: A Website Profiling Women Entrepreneurs In Syracuse, Jill Comoletti
Honors Capstone Projects - All
My Honors Capstone project is a website titled Women Breaking Ground (www.womenbreakingground.com). On my website, I published 10 feature-length profiles on women entrepreneurs in Syracuse. Each profile features photographs and an interactive map to show readers the location of the woman-owned business. This project is relevant because the number of women business owners in the United States is increasing; in fact, women are opening 1,200 new businesses every day. I hope that my project inspires even more women to pursue their passion and become entrepreneurs.

White Bread Girl: Real Life Chronicles Of A Twenty-Something, Rose Aschebrock
Honors Capstone Projects - All
Hi! Did you pick up this project book, see the title and immediately wonder, "What is a White Bread Girl anyway?"
Good question. I like you.
There are so many books aimed at the 20something category claiming to represent my generation and miserably failing.
Maybe I fall into a 20something minority category but I don’t enjoy eating pizza at 2am like Lena Dunham in her book Not That kind of Girl, I don’t like eating nothing and drinking everything like The Betches do in their book Nice is Just a Place in France and I’m not a fan of …

The context of this project is a digital magazine format featuring lifestyle photography for local restaurants in northern New Jersey. Conceptually, the intent of the magazine is to provide the reader a glimpse of restaurants in their entirety, from food to environment. I produced all content, except for the real user reviews, and created the design and interactive elements to accompany the content. The reviews are from actual customers who I talked to at each restaurant location. After multiple trips to each restaurant to photograph the food and atmosphere and talk to staff and customers, I edited the content in …

The project is broken up into three stand-alone narratives: “Smoking,” “Chivalry,” and “Advice.”
Strada: A City-Centric Digital Magazine On Florence, Italy, Gabriela Riccardi
Strada: A City-Centric Digital Magazine On Florence, Italy, Gabriela Riccardi
Honors Capstone Projects - All
More than 45 American university and colleges run programs in Florence, Italy, translating to more than one student center per square mile of the city. And the young American presence is apparent in Firenze. Students fill the city center, flock together in coffee shops, flow in and out of markets and museums and discoteques. But from this stronghold springs an Florentine catering to Americanism: there are restaurants that will speak English rather than Italian, shops that will sell American labels from home, and piazzas that are bustling not with young Italians, but students from the States. It can be remarkably …
Diaspora Times Two, Benjamin Cleeton
Diaspora Times Two, Benjamin Cleeton
Honors Capstone Projects - All
Diaspora Times Two is a photographic journalistic study of Africans living in Guangzhou, China and Chinese in Accra, Ghana. The study focuses on two young men from the Gambia who are looking for low-wage work in Guangzhou and a house of five Chinese telecommunications workers employing Ghanaians in Accra. A micro approach was taken, seeking similarities and differences between the immigrants, making images that record details not found in a general photographic survey of the areas. The project brings together stories collected from both Africans and Asians, providing insights into the process of international relocation driven by economic challenges and …
