"Can't Nobody Fly With All That Stuff": Exploring Representations And Standards Of Black Patriarchal Masculinity In Television, Film, And Music, Chloe Marshall

Academic Symposium of Undergraduate Scholarship

This project explores representations of Black masculinity in television, music, and cinema. I analyze specific genres of each medium that display images of masculinity seen by a variety of audiences. From these images, I derive character types that I analyze using R.W. Connell's theory of hegemonic masculinity. Ultimately, I draw conclusions about the media's contributions to a greater hegemonic model of masculinity for young Black males. The consequences of hegemony and patriarchal power are discussed as examples of how mainstream societal standards of gender identity are damaging to the progress of Black communities.

Beyond The Wine Menu: Understanding Flavor And Taste Perception As A Factor In Pairing Wine And Dessert, Cristina Vazquez

My thesis will explore vinotypes, a method used to distinguish a wine taster’s sensitivity, which will be defined further, and an understanding of the physiology of taste and flavor perceptions in pairing wines with desserts. I will explore this topic by examining the evolution of man’s original perception of wine throughout history, leading to how wine is perceived today. Specifically, I will focus on the three prevailing theories, which will help me identify the main factors in creating a successful pairing. Social Activism With Extra Sauce: How Food Communication Increases Political Awareness In Social Media, Amy Demello

This project explores the combination of social media and food communication and challenges the prevailing belief that food on social media is trivial, frivolous, and unmeaning. This paper will explain why social media, as well as food communication, are both influential and powerful tools for activism. To prove this, I analyze Twitter posts through Storify. Ultimately, I draw conclusions about the influence of food in activism on social media. Traditional Foot Racing V. Obstacle Racing, Kathleen Sands

The purpose of this study was to examine how to best promote, execute, and manage traditional foot racing and obstacle racing in the 21^st century. Accurately measured traditional foot racing has been in existence since the 1600s (“Running History Story”). Much more recently, in 1990, obstacle racing originated and brought change to the racing industry (“The History of Obstacle Races”). As a result, this study investigated the two different cultures of traditional foot racing and obstacle racing, and what the introduction of obstacle racing means for racing coordinators of both types of events.
