By Reason Of Maternal Duties, Gretchen Batcheller

Gretchen D Batcheller

Oil on canvas, 60x72 inches Artist's Statement: I am a woman, a spouse, a friend, a visual artist, a scholar, and a teacher created in the image of the triune God. I am forgiven and have a lifelong and prayerful relationship with Jesus Christ through the power of the Holy Spirit. I am a fallible, broken, redeemed child of God. I hold that human relationships are bound together by the Holy Spirit, through risk-taking in conversation and in endeavor. Faith is the foundation of who I am, and thereby, what I do. I hold that the visual arts tap into …

'Medieval' Makes A Comeback In Modern Politics. What's Going On?, Clare Monagle, Louise D'Arcens Jan 2014

'Medieval' Makes A Comeback In Modern Politics. What's Going On?, Clare Monagle, Louise D'Arcens

Faculty of Law, Humanities and the Arts - Papers (Archive)

According to Hansard, in the parliament of John Howard's first term of government the adjective "medieval" was used eight times. In the following term, however, it cropped up 46 times. What happened? Why did our members and senators suddenly need to describe things as medieval? What happened was 9/11. The spectacle of planes crashing into skyscrapers prompted myriad politicians, in Australia and elsewhere, to denounce the perpetrators as "medieval" What we have seen in recent weeks is medieval barbarism, perpetrated and spread with the most modern of technology. Abbott is not alone; it has become commonplace to describe Islamic State …

The Necessity Of The New: Between The Modern And The Contemporary, Ian A. Mclean Jan 2014

The Necessity Of The New: Between The Modern And The Contemporary, Ian A. Mclean

Faculty of Law, Humanities and the Arts - Papers (Archive)

'"The contemporary" is a curious neologism,' observed James Meyer, as the definite article lends this 'adjective or noun denoting a shared temporality of persons, things, or events ... a new importance.' The definite article announced the art world's big discovery around the turn of the twenty-first century: that the word 'contemporary' had, like the term 'modern' before it, acquired a theoretical and, indeed, metaphysical density. The contemporary, as more than a few art critics say these days, is the new modern. To make this claim, whether as an act of succession or negation, is to invest in a loaded history. …

Uneven Ground: Figurations Of The Rural Modern In The U.S. South, 1890-1945, Benjamin S. Child

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

New modernist studies has opened wide the discussion about what modernism means, when it begins, and, compellingly for the purposes of this project, where it occurs. Exploring intersections between modernization, modernism, labor, and segregation in the agricultural South, this dissertation demonstrates how the effects of nascent industrialization, emergent technologies, and "modern" thought are animated by figures and spaces associated with--or performing--versions of rurality. The project is divided into three major sections. In the first, I suggest that the contradictions of African American life in the post-Reconstruction world are parsed in the period's literature through the presence of a veiled georgic …

Cultures Of Practice Within Design: An Exploration Of The Differences And Similarities Between Photography And Painting As Representational Practices, Alun John Price Jan 2014

Cultures Of Practice Within Design: An Exploration Of The Differences And Similarities Between Photography And Painting As Representational Practices, Alun John Price

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Contemporary designers and photographers face many challenges as the profession rapidly develops. This is especially the case in in the Western Australian context. A review into the recent history of the Western Australian design profession is evidence that designers and photographers are consistently shifting between commercial and self-expressive practice. However, the urge to keep up with technological advancement has masked conscious development of this shift, which is a key to self-realisation and improvement for a designer and photographer. This lack of conscious questioning limits holistic development in design practice. This research reflects on myself as a designer developing a response …
