Immigrants And Cultural Continuance In The Liturgy: Celebrating The Nigerian Igbo Mass In The United States, M. Reginald Anibueze D.D.L. Dec 2014

Immigrants And Cultural Continuance In The Liturgy: Celebrating The Nigerian Igbo Mass In The United States, M. Reginald Anibueze D.D.L.

Journal of the Black Catholic Theological Symposium

The dynamics of the celebration of the Igbo Mass in the United States reveals a cultural nostalgia inherent among Igbo immigrants, one that aims at preserving the Igbo identity and culture, even in the diaspora. Convinced to maintain their cultural heritage on foreign soil, Nigerian Igbo Catholic immigrants established faith communities where liturgical worship is performed and expressed in ways that are consistent and meaningful to Igbo indigenous ways of worship. This essay studies the liturgical life of Nigerian Igbo Catholics in the United States, and how a people's cultural and religious heritage is preserved, sustained, and promoted in the …

A Movement Tool Kit for the Divergent and Convergent CPS Guidelines:

Instruction Cards and Activity Floor Mats

Movement is as natural to humans as breathing is, and, yet, passivity starts early in schools. We are taught to sit still and in silence for long periods of time. By the time we reach adulthood and enter the workforce, we have almost forgotten our sense of embodiment. This lack of movement is counter-productive, not only to learning but to the development of creativity as well. For this project, I designed a tool to recapture the joy and playfulness of movement. Furthermore, the …

Blah, Blah, Blah: Making Sense Of Nonsense In Irish Vocal Music, Catherine E. Mullins Nov 2014

Blah, Blah, Blah: Making Sense Of Nonsense In Irish Vocal Music, Catherine E. Mullins

Musical Offerings

This paper seeks to provide a foundation for understanding lilting, a traditional type of vocal music found in Ireland that involves improvising non-lexical vocables to dance tunes, in order to help preserve this genre in its traditional form as well as encourage its transformation and incorporation into modern music. Through a case study, this research paper demonstrates certain features and patterns that may characterize traditional lilting. A recording of Seamus Fay’s performance of the traditional folk jig, “Humours of Ballyloughlin,” has been transcribed for analysis and examined for possible relationships of vocables or vowels to music and vocables to other …

The Psychology Of Competitive Dance: A Study Of The Motivations For Adolescent Involvement, Samantha Sobash Sep 2014

The Psychology Of Competitive Dance: A Study Of The Motivations For Adolescent Involvement, Samantha Sobash

e-Research: A Journal of Undergraduate Work

"Competition is a social process that is so pervasive in Western civilization that no one can escape it" (Robson 2004). Dance training for most people begins at an early age, and thus the art form akin to sports introduces youth to competition. The booming dance competition industry has only enhanced the competitive aspect of the art form. Currently there are upwards of 200 local, regional, and national competitions held annually with participants as young as four years old. Is competition innate or are we introducing it as part of youth development in the Western world? Youth are increasingly pushed by …

Performance Sculpture--An Exploratory Collaboration Between Sculpture And Dance, Cesia G. Kearns Aug 2014

Performance Sculpture--An Exploratory Collaboration Between Sculpture And Dance, Cesia G. Kearns

Journal of Undergraduate Research at Minnesota State University, Mankato

Kinetic sculpture suggests new visual possibilities when combined with dance. Wishing to explore such avenues of interaction for sculpture, this artist sought to develop pieces that could be incorporated into choreography. An artist and a choreographer wove their concepts and styles together to create a performance art piece that rose from the reciprocal influences of interactive sculpture and dance. The creative process included development of concepts, visual imagery, and movement as the artist and choreographer shared ideas. The choreography of the original dance influenced the form, structure, and conceptual elements of the sculpture, which was developed in reaction to the …

The Effects Of Minimalism/Indeterminacy On The Merce Cunningham And John Cage Collaboration, Janelle M. Morrison Aug 2014

The Effects Of Minimalism/Indeterminacy On The Merce Cunningham And John Cage Collaboration, Janelle M. Morrison

Journal of Undergraduate Research at Minnesota State University, Mankato

Minimalism is movement in both the visual and performing arts that strive to focus attention on the subject as an object, reducing its historical and expressive content to a bare minimum or art without meaning. John Cage’s music stems from the idea of minimalism and expands itself into what he calls “indeterminacy.” Indeterminacy means that chance operations will produce the score and performer’s choices. Through Cage’s study of Zen he learned about The Book of Change, I Ching. Using his charts, based on this book and the toss of three coins, Cage could layout the format of his compositions. Merce …

It’S In The Backbone: Dance From Africa Through The Diaspora, An Interview With Deama Battle, Deama Battle, Kenneth J. Cooper Jul 2014

It’S In The Backbone: Dance From Africa Through The Diaspora, An Interview With Deama Battle, Deama Battle, Kenneth J. Cooper

Trotter Review

Classically trained in dance, DeAma Battle became interested in Africa-rooted dance in the 1960s. She started performing the traditional dances from Africa that spread, via the Atlantic slave trade, to the United States, the Caribbean, and South America. She not only has performed those steps and movements, Battle has studied them, with master dancers from West Africa, Brazil, Haiti, Jamaica, and Cuba. One of her teachers and mentors was Chuck Davis, a leading African American teacher of traditional African dance. Her research has probed deeper, into the field abroad, on dance-study tours to Haiti, Jamaica, Ghana, Senegal, Morocco, and other …

Eva'lution In Fandangos, Fiestas, And Flamenco: Adding To The Repertoire Of Chicano Expressive Arts, Trisha Martinez

American Studies ETDs

This study seeks to explain this curious and unknown connection of Albuquerque flamenco to Eva Encinias-Sandoval and the dance traditions of Nuevomexicanos. I seek to identify the history and social impact of this rich and distinct New Mexico flamenco tradition by tracing the development of Encinias-Sandoval's career and the establishment of her now world-class flamenco arts program, offered through the University of New Mexico's Dance and Theatre Department, as well as thorough affiliates and organizations of the National Institute of Flamenco. More specifically, my thesis describes how Eva Encinias-Sandoval built and continues to anchor this inspiring expressive art form in …

Fascism, Flamenco, And Ballet Español: Nacionalflamenquismo, Theresa Goldbach Jul 2014

Fascism, Flamenco, And Ballet Español: Nacionalflamenquismo, Theresa Goldbach

Theatre & Dance ETDs

The nationalist regime of General Francisco Franco (1936-1975) dramatically and forcefully reshaped every element of Spanish culture including dance and flamenco. Many flamencologists derisively refer to the resulting product of this system as nacionalflamenquismo or national-flamencoism. The bureaucratic mechanics that created nacionalflamenquismo evolved throughout the first three decades of the regime to fit with changing economic and political realities. As Spain re-entered the global community following its Civil War (1936-1939), flamenco and Spanish dance proved useful tools for international public relations as well as domestic propaganda. By discerning the various factors that linked the art of flamenco to the political …

Brothers In Motion: Religious Practice, Political Action, And The Mobilization Of The Early Muslim Brotherhood, Ian Henry Vandermeulen Jun 2014

Brothers In Motion: Religious Practice, Political Action, And The Mobilization Of The Early Muslim Brotherhood, Ian Henry Vandermeulen

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

In light of Randy Martin's proposal to use dance as an analytic tool for understanding social movements, this article seeks to reconstruct the early mobilization of the Muslim Brotherhood as "bodies in motion." Through a re-examination of both primary and secondary source material, this study highlights the ways in which founder Hasan al-Banna appropriated both Islamic and colonial choreographic logics into the Muslim Brotherhood's pious training regimen, scouting programs, political expression, and social welfare projects. I argue that the Muslim Brotherhood was mobilized through al-Banna's revival of traditional Islamic practices concerning the body, reconfigured for the goal not of otherworldly …

Graduate Student Independent Studies

Based on a true story, this fictionalized memoir is about a second generation Japanese-American girl growing up in a large family in California during the 1930's and 1940's. Set against the backdrop of the Depression and the internment of West Coast "persons of Japanese ancestry" during World War II, the story follows the protagonist's childhood interest in dance as it blossoms into a true calling.

Dancing In The Stacks: Dance Works And The Concept Of Authorship In Libraries, Dominique Bourassa Jan 2014

Dancing In The Stacks: Dance Works And The Concept Of Authorship In Libraries, Dominique Bourassa

Library Staff Publications

It is self-evident to choreographers, dancers and dance scholars that dances are works in their own right as much as literary and musical works are. However, from an American library perspective, this fact was not fully acknowledged until 20 years ago. Indeed, the historical mistreatment of dance works has evolved from their once total absence from subject taxonomies, to their being classified with works about recreation instead of among the “serious” arts, to their being subordinated to music. The situation greatly improved in 1994 with the publication by the Library of Congress (LC) of special cataloging rules that finally treat …

Exploring Dance Teachers' Perceptions: Video As A Teaching Tool, Daralyn Scurlock Jan 2014

Exploring Dance Teachers' Perceptions: Video As A Teaching Tool, Daralyn Scurlock

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

The process in which dance instructors evaluate dance students' technical skills has been dependent on spontaneity; it is time sensitive and almost synchronous. However, video introduces an asynchronous evaluating component. Video recording can be utilized in the dance profession not only to improve a dancer's overall performance, but as an injury prevention tool. Therefore video permits deeper reflection.

This is a preliminary study designed to open the door for future studies in the dance field. In order to gain the in depth knowledge required for this thesis, an instrumental case-study design was utilized based primarily on the analyses of broad, …

Fitness For Function And Dance Aesthetics, Eric C. Mullis Jan 2014

Fitness For Function And Dance Aesthetics, Eric C. Mullis

Contemporary Aesthetics (Journal Archive)

This essay discusses the manner in which the appreciation of fitness for function can be applied to dance aesthetics. Drawing on Allen Carlson and Glenn Parsons’ work, the essay considers the problems of indeterminacy, translation, and dysfunction as they pertain to the appreciation of dance movement. It then argues that fitness for function can be used to critically assess post-modern task dances and contemporary dance works that do not rely on the execution of codified dance technique.

El Duende's Struggle With Words: Embodied And Intellectual Investigation Of Spiritual Experience Within Flamenco Dance, Chloe Rockas Jan 2014

El Duende's Struggle With Words: Embodied And Intellectual Investigation Of Spiritual Experience Within Flamenco Dance, Chloe Rockas

Summer Research

El duende is popularly understood as a dark spirit that overtakes both the audience and performers in a cathartic, embodied and spiritual experience of authentic flamenco music and dance. This research was dedicated to understanding the dynamics of the phenomenon as described by famed Spanish poet, Federico García Lorca, and the possibility of translating or transmitting it through text. I attempted to produce a study of the relationship between the cognitive mode of textual representation and the physical and spiritual experience of art through an analysis which placed my own creative writing and physical study of flamenco dance in conversation …

TodavíA Bailamos La Cueca Sola : From Local Protest Practice Against Chile's Dictatorship To (Trans)National Memory Icon, Karolina Sonja Babic

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

This dissertation is a multi-sited cultural-historical ethnography about the cueca sola, a dance that was created to denounce the disappearances of citizens during Chile's dictatorship in the 1970s. Some women with missing relatives, who belonged to the music group Conjunto Folclórico of the Association of the Relatives of the Detained and Disappeared (AFDD), created a variation on the Chilean national dance (the cueca - traditionally a courtship dance between a man and a woman) which did not involve a male partner. Instead, they performed it alone. In so doing, these women, who were among the first to denounce the military's …

Art Of State / State Of Art : The European Tours Of Martha Graham And Her Dance Company, 1950-1967, Ileana Camelia Lenart

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Praised for inventing a new language of dance and for freeing the human body and spirit through it, Martha Graham (1894-1991) is one of the most revered artistic innovators of the 20th century. In spite of the complexity of her art and persona, the scholarly work devoted to her reflects a fascination with "Graham the artist", limited to the "magic years" of the thirties and the forties, considered the peak of her artistry and "technique" dance innovation. The rest of her long life and artistic career have not been not thoroughly explored by dance historians, since they unjustly assume this …

It aims to discuss the genesis of a dance performance inspired by Hatha Yoga and specifically its concept of balancing hot and cold power. The terms Hatha Yoga and the art of creative dance and other terms related to Hatha Yoga concepts are accordingly discussed. Six areas of inquiry were considered in this research project. They were: a survey of source documents, expert interviews, the standard criteria of Thai national artists, audience evaluations, student dance workshops, along with other media and online information. The resulting dance creation …

Never Give A Sword To A Man Who Can't Dance, Colin Slade Jan 2014

Never Give A Sword To A Man Who Can't Dance, Colin Slade

Masters Theses

War dances have long been a powerful means of preparing warriors for combat or the intimidation of an enemy, but they are also used in the ceremonial supplication of deity or celebration of victory. They are a fundamental artifact of many cultures throughout the world. Nevertheless, the United States of America boasts the most powerful military in history, yet it lacks a war dance. This is valid until one accepts a simple truth; military drill is a dance. However, Americans would object to such a proposition even though they have adopted and adapted military drill as their own, describe it …

The Marauder’S Son: An Exploration Of The Classical Story Ballet And Children’S Literature, Emily H. Kleeman Jan 2014

The Marauder’S Son: An Exploration Of The Classical Story Ballet And Children’S Literature, Emily H. Kleeman

Pitzer Senior Theses

The Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling was, for many Millennials, a defining literary and media experience. The popularity of the series has spawned many fan-made parodies. Meanwhile, in recent years, the classical Petipa story ballet style has begun to give way to more modern structures of choreography. The Marauder’s Son, the culmination of a yearlong choreographic endeavor, is a story ballet that strives to introduce new audiences to classical dance through the use of the first book in the Harry Potter series, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. The full production is available for viewing in the …

Trunk Coordination In Dancers And Non-Dancers, Danielle N. Jarvis, Jo Armour Smith, Kornelia Kulig Jan 2014

Trunk Coordination In Dancers And Non-Dancers, Danielle N. Jarvis, Jo Armour Smith, Kornelia Kulig

Physical Therapy Faculty Articles and Research

Variability, or how a task changes across trials, may reveal differences between athletes of differing skill levels. The purpose of this study was to examine trunk and lower extremity (LE) single joint kinematic variability and inter-segmental coordination variability in dancers and non-dancers during bipedal vertical dance jumps (sautés). Twenty healthy females, ten with no formal dance training and ten professional dancers, performed 20 consecutive sautés. Single joint kinematic variability was assessed using mean standard deviation of angular displacement, and inter-segmental coordination variability was assessed using angular deviation of the coupling angle between segments. Within the context of the standard error …
