One of the advantages of a crisis within any human institution is that it generates fracture, encourages re-evaluation, self-criticism, and, occasionally, anger. In April2011, a conference was organised in Milltown Institute around the theme of Broken Faith: &-visioning the Church in Ireland.

Covington Aircraft Engines, Center For Faith & Work At Letourneau University, Paul Abbott
Theology of Work Project
Paul Abbott takes Matthew 6:33 to heart as he fulfills his calling to be a Christian businessman: “Seek ye first the kingdom of God and his righteousness and all these things will be added unto you.” (Click here to explore what this verse says about work.) Since 1972, he and his wife, Betty, have been working at Covington Aircraft Engines, a company of 65 employees that runs on four core principles: integrity, dependability, affordability, and quality service. Since people’s lives are at stake, integrity is essential to their business.

Unruly Catholics From Dante To Madonna: Faith, Heresy, And Politics In Cultural Studies, Marc Dipaolo

"During the Second Vatican Council, the Roman Catholic Church went through a period of liberal reform under the stewardship of Popes John XXIII and Paul VI. Successive popes sharply reversed course, enforcing conservative ideological values and silencing progressive voices in the Church. Consequently, those Catholics who had embraced the spirit of Vatican II were left feeling adrift and betrayed. In Unruly Catholics from Dante to Madonna, scholars of literature, film, religion, history, and sociology delve into this conflict–and historically similar ones–through the examination of narratives by and about rebellious Catholics.
Essays in Unruly Catholics explore how renowned Catholic literary figures …

Luther On Idolatry: A Lutheran Response To Contemporary False Belief, Michael Lockwood
Luther On Idolatry: A Lutheran Response To Contemporary False Belief, Michael Lockwood
Doctor of Philosophy Dissertation
Lockwood, Michael A. "Luther on Idolatry: A Lutheran Response to Contemporary False Belief." Ph.D. diss., Concordia Seminary, 2013. 303 pp.
The first step in solving any problem is to understand the problem. As Christians we know that Christ is the solution to the human plight. Yet what exactly is this plight? And why do so many people feel no need for the solution he provides? Luther's answer is that people feel no need for the true God until they are disenchanted with the false gods they have put in his place, which they think can provide all they need.

Man’S Great Dilemma And God’S Greater Provision: The Doctrine Of Justification And Its Necessary Role As The Foundation For Understanding Romans 6, Christina L. Fuselli
Man’S Great Dilemma And God’S Greater Provision: The Doctrine Of Justification And Its Necessary Role As The Foundation For Understanding Romans 6, Christina L. Fuselli
Senior Honors Theses
All of mankind faces a great dilemma, whether they realize it or not, regarding their state of depravity in sin. No man could ever devise a solution for the problem; even great philosophers have been stumped over how a righteous God could possibly save sinners. Yet God’s answer to man’s dilemma is the death of Christ, whereby He has made the way to declare man righteous while remaining righteous Himself. The marvelous truths presented in Romans go even further to reveal that not only has righteousness been provided, but those who have been identified in the death and resurrection of …

Christian Navy Chaplains And The Challenge Of Expanding Religious Pluralism, Timothy Oswald
Doctor of Ministry Major Applied Project
Oswald, Timothy J. “Christian Navy Chaplains and the Challenge of Expanding Religious Pluralism.” D.Min. Major Applied Project, Concordia Seminary – St. Louis. 2013. 245 pp.
Navy chaplains are expected to facilitate for the religious needs of those from other faiths. For chaplains who believe in the exclusivity of the Christian religion, this can create theological and even personal tensions about support for religious practices which the chaplain believes to be false.
This project explores those tensions and proposes ways to help exclusivist Navy chaplains navigate them. The final ministry product is a Power Point® brief. It draws from bibliographic research, …

Introduction To Faith And The Historian: Catholic Perspectives, Nick Salvatore
Introduction To Faith And The Historian: Catholic Perspectives, Nick Salvatore
Nick Salvatore
[Excerpt] What follows are the essays by eight historians touched by Catholicism on the meaning of that experience and its effect on their professional work. The essays are presented in broad chronological order, organized more by generational cohort than by specific date of birth. The essays are reflections, in some cases even meditations, and were never intended to conform to the structure and methodology of the historical article for a professional journal. Still, we have tried to shed some light on the inner processes that create that very work.

[Excerpt] In the decade I spent living with Gene Debs, I thought much about faith's relation to intellect, especially in the political realm. It was not just that a socialist in capitalist America needed faith but rather that Debs's very vision of America's promise was itself a profound act of faith. But with the exception of the last chapter, which I titled, "A Species of Purging," following a phrase in one of Debs's prison letters, overt discussion of any religious sensibility was largely sotto voce, echoes of a private dialogue with myself. Pleased as I was with the book when …

Fideism, Evidentialism, And The Epistemology Of Religious Belief, Matthew P. Butcher
Fideism, Evidentialism, And The Epistemology Of Religious Belief, Matthew P. Butcher
Dissertations
Fideism is the theory that certain propositions can be held by faith without regard to evidence. Its epistemological underpinnings are often contrasted with evidentialism - the view that one is justified in holding a belief if and only if that belief is based on sufficient undefeated evidence. Recently, John Bishop and C. Stephen Evans have each forwarded new theories of fideism that oppose evidentialism. This dissertation examines these two theories, raising problems that threaten to undermine the epistemological claims of the fideist. A version of evidentialism is then advanced that addresses the problems identified by Evans and Bishop. Particularly important …

Drive-In Sin, Shelly Stewart Cato
Drive-In Sin, Shelly Stewart Cato
All ETDs from UAB
Drive-In Sin is a collection of twenty-five poems. The poems include rhyming couplets, tercets, and quatrains, loosely-defined sonnets, triolets, and free verse. Most include a backbone of iambs, giving a sense of rhythm and continuity to the grouping. The subject matter is most often Southern, but vacillates between power-stripped resignation and brutal invective. A search for female empowerment often dictates the tone.

This memoir is primarily a collection of creative nonfiction essays. It includes one fictional short story for adults, "Rise," and one fictional story written for children, "The Memory Keepers." The essays and stories were produced following the death of my son; they explore the process of grieving his loss and rediscovering purpose and meaning in my life through story, faith, and community.
