Orchestral Tuba Audition Preparation: The Perspective Of Three Successful Teachers, Golden A. Lund

Daniel Perantoni, Warren Deck, and Mike Roylance have played significant roles in developing students that have won orchestral tuba positions in recent decades. These three instructors are representative of the past 30 years in that the success of their students are tiered chronologically over that time period; Perantoni has had students winning orchestral positions since the 1980s, Warren Deck’s studio began flourishing in the 1990’s, and Mike Roylance’s students have been emerging since he began teaching in Boston in 2003.

Polychoral compositions have been present since the late Renaissance and early Baroque periods. Oftentimes, the polychoral compositions performed today are compositions written during these early musical periods. In the latter half of the twentieth century, James Erwin Fritschel (b. 1929) wrote polychoral compositions that match the level of difficulty and excitement of the early polychoral compositions of the late Renaissance and early Baroque periods. Fritschel’s compositions have been celebrated by leading choral programs throughout the world, yet there is a notable lack of academic analysis of his works. Pirates have always been mysterious figures. They came out of nowhere, attacked their victims, plundered their goods, and vanished. Reason tells us that pirates were no more than common criminals, but over the centuries, history has come to portray them as romantic and even heroic figures. This stereotype of piracy has long been a fascination of authors, poets, and composers, and it is evident in our cultural landscape.

I began the investigation of this course and subsequent course portfolio with the following objectives in mind:
- To solidify and articulate the skills I intend students enrolled in this course to achieve by the end of the semester;
- To think creatively about the presentation of course material to most effectively engage and empower students' success; and
- To assess the effectiveness of the course activities in achieving course goals stated in the syllabus.
