Rethinking Purpose: Music, Education And Disciplinary Bridges, Samuel Richards, Cathy Benedict, David Biedenbender, Betty Younker, Mark Clague, Catherine Rand

David Biedenbender

Disciplinary identity is often at the core of our musical engagements, scholarly research and educational goals. Our schools, curricula, and pedagogy are repeatedly (and historically) shaped by how we (and others) view ourselves within the institution, the arts, and our culture. However, recent developments in communications, production, distribution, and consumption of music have drastically changed the way everyone engages with music. Have our educational objectives, goals, and identities evolved as well? We believe that at the nexus of these developments is the necessity to create a productive dialogue with other disciplines, both inside and outside of music, in order to …

Kimberly H Councill

The purpose of the study was to examine the effect of teacher experience on student progress and performance quality in an introductory applied lesson. Nine experienced teachers and 15 pre-service teachers taught an adult beginner to play ‘Mary Had a Little Lamb’ on a wind instrument. The lessons were videotaped for subsequent analysis of teaching behaviors and performance achievement. Following instruction, a random sample of teachers was interviewed about their perceptions of the lesson. A panel of adjudicators rated final pupil performances. No significant difference was found between pupils taught by experienced and pre-service teachers in the quality of their …

A 20th-Century Alternative For The Alto Trombonist: Paul Hindemith's Sonata For Alto Horn, David Mathie Jul 2012

A 20th-Century Alternative For The Alto Trombonist: Paul Hindemith's Sonata For Alto Horn, David Mathie

David G. Mathie

As more trombonists use the alto trombone on recitals, finding music from various historical periods becomes a problem. The works of the baroque and classical periods for alto trombone, such as the Albrechtsberger and Wagenseil concerti, are now performed enough to be considered "warhorses"! Although many contemporary composers, such as Frigyes Hidas and Thom Ritter George, have written excellent new works for the instrument, 20th-century recital music for the alto trombone is still scarce. An alternative is to transcribe works from the brass literature; one of the finest is the Sonata for Alto Horn by Paul Hindemith.

'Judith' And The Louisville Orchestra: The Rest Of The Story, Jeanne Belfy Jul 2012

'Judith' And The Louisville Orchestra: The Rest Of The Story, Jeanne Belfy

Jeanne M. Belfy

Musicians and scholars who lived through the late 1940s and early 1950s witnessed an astounding activity which took place in Louisville, Kentucky during that time. An ambitious effort by civic and musical leaders yielded an extraordinary legacy of new music, pioneering a concept that placed the composer first in the orchestral bureaucratic hierarchy. From the fall of 1948 through 1958, the commissioning project of the Louisville Orchestra fostered the creation of 132 musical compositions. The Louisville Orchestra preserved performances of approximately one hundred of these compositions on long-playing records at a time when little contemporary art music was available through …

The Eminence Front, Andrew Blitman Apr 2012

The Eminence Front, Andrew Blitman

Andrew Blitman

Thirty years ago, a British rock band called The Who made a profound statement. Following the unexpected death of legendary drummer Keith Moon in 1980, Who guitarist and composer Pete Townshend entered a long period of mourning and reflection. Out of this epoch of uncertainty for the band emerged a musical gem, the likes of which never seen before or since. “Eminence Front”, the premiere single of the 1982 album It’s Hard, represents the insight gained from the intense feelings of loss associated with Moon’s demise. And, that knowledge bears enormous implications for the ways of the individual and for …

Les Structures Du Rêve, For Two Marimbas And Multipercussion., Bruno Louchourn

Bruno Louchouarn

Recent studies have likened dreams to virtual reality. They are much closer in nature to our conscious life than previously thought. In many ways the apprehension of dreams parallel that of music. In both case a stream of virtually real events is pieced together and accepted by the mind in a very intuitive fashion, with similar suspension of disbelief, and similar level of aesthetic responses from the beautiful to the disturbing. Their structure is clear from moment to moment but less precisely felt globally

Surface Tension, David Biedenbender Dec 2011

Surface Tension, David Biedenbender

David Biedenbender

I am often inspired by the fleeting moments of consciousness as I fall asleep, a space that lies between the real and the surreal, between waking and dreaming. As I lay in bed one evening, I began to imagine a glass of water, filled to the brim, with the water rising slightly over the top, surface tension preventing it from spilling over. I picked up the glass and began to toss it up and down, yet the water remained intact, held together by a strange force. I then pulled the water out of the glass with my fingers and tossed …
