Beyond Tolerance: Consciously Using Universal Energy Laws, Discernment, And Harmonious Relationship Principles, Carroy U. Ferguson Dec 2010

Beyond Tolerance: Consciously Using Universal Energy Laws, Discernment, And Harmonious Relationship Principles, Carroy U. Ferguson

Carroy U "Cuf" Ferguson, Ph.D.

Every day we, as human beings, maneuver through a myriad of circumstances in our individual and collective life spaces. Central to our experiences is the nature, kind, and quality of our relationships. When we encounter differences (racial, ethnic, cultural, religious, economic, sexual orientation, the mentally and physically challenged), a common issue that often emerges in our experiences is the extent to which we use tolerance in relating to other people and circumstances. For this reason, I want to discuss the nature of tolerance and its limitations, and how to move beyond tolerance by consciously using Universal Energy Laws, discernment, and …

Teaching Vocabulary Through Word Formation Strategies Among Iranian Intermediate Efl Students, Mohammad Ali Nasrollahi, Mohammad Sadeghi Dec 2010

Teaching Vocabulary Through Word Formation Strategies Among Iranian Intermediate Efl Students, Mohammad Ali Nasrollahi, Mohammad Sadeghi

Mohammad Ali Nasrollahi(Ph.D)

The purpose of this study was to determine whether word formation strategy improves vocabulary learning of Iranian intermediate EFL students, or not. Hence, a group of seventy homo-geneous students were selected. They were randomly assigned to control and experimental groups. Then, both groups enjoyed a series of similar instructions except that the students in experimental group were required to divide the words they are faced with to their meaningful and functional constituents. In order to make students learn vocabularies through analyzing them to their functional and grammatical affixes, they are led to relate the faced words to their relative groups …

From Job Search To Hiring To Promotion: The Labour Market Experiences Of Ethnic Minorities In Beijing, Reza Hasmath Dec 2010

From Job Search To Hiring To Promotion: The Labour Market Experiences Of Ethnic Minorities In Beijing, Reza Hasmath

Reza Hasmath

Drawing on micro-level census data and interviews with individual workers and employers, this article examines the job-search, hiring and promotion experiences of ethnic minority workers and jobseekers in Beijing. Labour market data indicate that ethnic minorities are at a disadvantage relative to the dominant Han ethnic group, particularly when it comes to employment in high-wage, skilled jobs. The evidence provided here suggests this may be attributable to gaps in the institutional framework that encourage reliance on social-network capital for job search, hiring and promotion. [Winner of the Society for the Study of Social Problems’ Poverty, Class, and Inequality Division Paper …

The Education Of Ethnic Minorities In Beijing, Reza Hasmath Dec 2010

The Education Of Ethnic Minorities In Beijing, Reza Hasmath

Reza Hasmath

This article investigates the operations of minority schools, and the subsequent on-the-ground experiences of ethnic minorities in Beijing at the primary, secondary and tertiary levels. The article suggests that the ‘inter-sectionality’ of ethnic identities, particularly minority-majority, rich-poor and urban-rural, must be factored in when examining the varying differences between minorities who have graduated from Beijing’s minority schools and non-Beijing ethnic minorities, who have enrolled in the capital city’s universities. The article draws upon recent statistical data, interviews with minority actors and public stakeholders, and participant observation in the city’s schools and universities.

The Ghost In The Global War On Terror: Critical Perspectives And Dangerous Implications For National Security And The Law, Nick J. Sciullo Dec 2010

The Ghost In The Global War On Terror: Critical Perspectives And Dangerous Implications For National Security And The Law, Nick J. Sciullo

Nick J. Sciullo

In this Article, I set out to discuss the dangerous implications of the Global War on Terror (GWOT) and, more generally, the at- tempts of the United States government to address notions of terror- ism and its effect on the safety of the United States and world citizens. I am primarily concerned with engaging a poststructuralist critique of the GWOT to strengthen legal discussions of terrorism and national security policy. While many in the legal academy have focused on particular issues relating to terrorism, I will engage in a macro-level analysis of the way the legal academy conceptualizes terrorism—not how …

Ending The Clash Of Science, Religion, And Human Survival: A Model For Reintegrating Reason, Intuition, And Reality, Cari Bourette Dec 2010

Ending The Clash Of Science, Religion, And Human Survival: A Model For Reintegrating Reason, Intuition, And Reality, Cari Bourette

Cari Bourette

While there is occasional interest in the reconciliation of science and religion, a system for incorporating both rational and intuitive information in making sense of the world and making informed decisions using the integration of this knowledge is generally unavailable in the modern world. Many religions throughout the world record a long ago period of “oneness” with the divine, with nature, with the universe, which is tragically interrupted by estrangement or separation. By delving into what may seem to be a foreign venue to discover “Reality” for a member of modern Western society, what may be discovered are remnants of …

Amos Lee's "Street Corner Preacher" Through Michel Foucault's Critique Of Scientific Knowledge: A Critique Of Legal Knowledge, Nick J. Sciullo Dec 2010

Amos Lee's "Street Corner Preacher" Through Michel Foucault's Critique Of Scientific Knowledge: A Critique Of Legal Knowledge, Nick J. Sciullo

Nick J. Sciullo

This article will demonstrate that although students of the law, legal scholars, and practitioners rely on a relatively narrow body of “legal scholarship,” there are in fact sundry diverse sources of legal thought that deserve to be evaluated along with currently accepted legal scholarship. It will present arguments in favor of appreciating music as a unique and important source of legal commentary through which we might understand how people relate to the law—what I have called “coming to the law.” It will demonstrate that music can be uniquely transgressive and presents a powerful alternative to what Michel Foucault called “scientific …

To Share Or Not To Share: Cancer And What Teachers Should Tell Students About It, Robert A. Eckhart Dec 2010

To Share Or Not To Share: Cancer And What Teachers Should Tell Students About It, Robert A. Eckhart

Robert A. Eckhart

How much personal information to disclose to students is a fundamental question teachers have been asking themselves for decades. How much should teachers tell their students – a lot or a little? How should they tell them –in class, or face-to-face? Should the teacher only tell their students in a limited manner and then not answer questions, or should they be prepared to answer any and all questions the students might have? These are difficult questions, but if the teacher approaches the disclosure in the right way – avoiding irrelevant, overly negative, or offensive disclosures – it can be a …

What Child Is This?: Closely Reading Collectivity And Queer Childrearing In Lackawanna Blues And Noah’S Arc, Vincent L. Stephens Dec 2010

What Child Is This?: Closely Reading Collectivity And Queer Childrearing In Lackawanna Blues And Noah’S Arc, Vincent L. Stephens

Vincent L Stephens

Increasing hostilities toward intimate change are rooted in longstanding affective investments in a sexual normativity that oppresses multiple strands of intimacy, including African American kinship networks and same-sex coupling. Since homosexuality is always racialized sexuality and African American kinship patterns have always been marginal by U. S. heteronormative standards, the present essay unmasks the ways sexual normativity has obscured collectivity as a resistive strategy in the lives of two "alternative" intimate groups with important overlaps, black gay and lesbian communities and African American extended families. The essay interrogates sexual normativity by defining and affirming the relevance of black collectivity to …

Card Check Labor Certification: Lessons From New York, William A. Herbert Dec 2010

Card Check Labor Certification: Lessons From New York, William A. Herbert

William A. Herbert

During the debate over the card check proposal in the Employee Free Choice Act of 2009 (EFCA), there has been a notable lack of discussion about New York’s fifty-year history and experience with card check certification. This article challenges and contradicts much of the prior scholarship and debate over EFCA by examining New York’s development and administration of card check procedures. The article begins with an overview of the history of New York public sector labor relations prior to the establishment of collective bargaining rights. As part of that historical overview, it examines the development of informal employee organization representation, …

Archibald Alexander And The Use Of Books: Theological Education And Print Culture In The Early Republic, Michael J. Paulus Jr. Dec 2010

Archibald Alexander And The Use Of Books: Theological Education And Print Culture In The Early Republic, Michael J. Paulus Jr.

Michael J. Paulus, Jr.

In the early nineteenth century, as part of a movement to Christianize the early American republic through education and persuasion, evangelical Christians developed a new type of theological school and an extensive theological print culture. The post-baccalaureate schools they established, usually called theological seminaries, were designed to be situated at the top of the educational system and to relate the Bible to all other fields of inquiry. The faculties, graduates, and publications of these schools influenced the content and formation of an allied Bibliocentric print culture. This paper highlights formative connections between theological education and print culture in the early …
