Coming To Terms: The Challenge Of Creating Christian Vocabulary In A Non-Christian Land, Van C. Gessel
Coming To Terms: The Challenge Of Creating Christian Vocabulary In A Non-Christian Land, Van C. Gessel
BYU Studies Quarterly
Because words, in any language, are not actual concrete objects but simply "sounds," "symbols," or "signifiers" that at best can only be a shadowy approximation of reality and truth, we must regard language as one of the slipperiest of the slippery treasures of mortality. If language itself produces, at best, a shadowy approximation of reality and truth, then translating that shadowy approximation from one language to another significantly compounds the slipperiness. The difficulty increases when translating Christian terms into a historically non-Christian language and culture such as Japanese. Thus, as Christian translators have attempted to borrow words from other languages …
Red De Comunicación Jesuita Desde La Misión De Moxos, Carlos-Urani Montiel
Red De Comunicación Jesuita Desde La Misión De Moxos, Carlos-Urani Montiel
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
The Society of Jesus shared information and generated knowledge through a communication network that made it possible to trace connection patterns. Jesuits used reiterative forms to share messages and to distribute knowledge between their European and American provinces. The aim of my thesis is to account for the scope, impact, and advantages of such communication strategies, which applied in a context where the environment was a decisive factor for the missional ministry. The Moxos Mission on the upper Amazon in what is now modern Bolivia consisted of an array of small urban settlements with strong influence in the Hispanic Kingdom …
Homage To Everyday People, Sang Ja Chun
Homage To Everyday People, Sang Ja Chun
Theses and Dissertations
Influenced by an ever-growing sense of alienation with my homeland, I have been determined to discover through my art practice an ability to challenge conventional notions of home, identity, communication and miscommunication. Exploring these themes, I became increasingly aware of the parallels between everyday life and art practice. By creatively connecting with a diverse amount of local people and their communities, I fulfilled desires to discover a sense of belonging and generated opportunities for others to break through traditional social boundaries and roles.

This article explores how contemporary historians can avail themselves of quantitative approaches to examine how elusive concepts like ‘time’ and ‘space’ have been used in the public domain. By making use of specifically designed programs, historians can use digital tools to harness an unprecedented mass of information. This is a particularly important methodological innovation at a time of rapidly expanding data: news, speeches, and commentary are available first electronically, and they are available on countless sites in an unprecedented array of formats. Mastering these sources digitally is not only imperative for the contemporary historian; it also provides essential source material …
Authority Arguments In Academic Contexts In Social Studies And Humanities, Begona Carrascal, Catherine E. Hundleby
Authority Arguments In Academic Contexts In Social Studies And Humanities, Begona Carrascal, Catherine E. Hundleby
OSSA Conference Archive
In academic contexts the appeal to authority is a quite common but seldom tested argument, either because we accept the authority without questioning it, or because we look for alternative experts or reasons to support a different point of view. But, by putting ourselves side by side an already accepted authority, we often rhetorically manoeuvre to displace the burden of the proof to avoid the fear to present our opinions and to allow face saving.
The Necessary Blend Of Narrative And Technology In Composition: Identity Crisis Embraced, Jessica A. Lewis
The Necessary Blend Of Narrative And Technology In Composition: Identity Crisis Embraced, Jessica A. Lewis
Masters Theses, 2010-2019
Wendy Bishop’s work, “Suddenly Sexy: Creative Writing Rear-ends Composition,” is focused on the necessity of flexible relationships between first-year composition professors and creative nonfiction writers for the improvement of composition pedagogy. This emphasis on collaboration and merging is even more important now due to the personal relationships and self-awareness established in online writing environments. In addition to the exploration of confused definitions in expressivist theory and the negotiation that Bishop puts forth in her work, this thesis focuses on the new influences of online writing environments on writing culture. Through the process of research and narrative, Bishop’s ideals and goals …
Lessons From Sodom, Scott Vander Ploeg
Lessons From Sodom, Scott Vander Ploeg
Symposium on Worship Archive
Many in today’s society have only a vague notion of sin and its consequences. Yet, the gospel of Jesus Christ stands out most brilliantly only when understood against the destructive backdrop of human sin. Utilizing the Old Testament story of Lot in Sodom, Scott Vander Ploeg will explore how to effectively communicate the bad news/good news of the gospel in a mission context.
Writes Of Spring A Study Of Communication Within Collective Devising, Jennifer Adams
Writes Of Spring A Study Of Communication Within Collective Devising, Jennifer Adams
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Communication is a pivotal element in creating theatre with other artists, with audiences, and with the outside world. Theatre artists are required to collaborate at nearly every step of the process. Despite the necessity of highly developed collaboration skills, communication in the creation of theatre is an often-underdeveloped curriculum area. As a Director and Teaching Artist I am particularly interested in how to find new ways of collaborating so I may model and pass these skills to my students. Through a qualitative research survey of communication used in collaborative devising, this research analyzes environments that improve communication and allow for …

Fan Commitment And Its Transformation Into Communitas Through The Process Of Proxemic Exchange, Arthur Alexander Aguirre
Fan Commitment And Its Transformation Into Communitas Through The Process Of Proxemic Exchange, Arthur Alexander Aguirre
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Live performances are comprised of various elements that scholars have utilized to understand the artist-fan relationship as well as the relationship among the fans themselves. In this study, I look at fandom in independent, or “indie” music and utilize my findings to creation a foundation for the understanding of fan commitment. I then argue that when a fan of a particular artist attends a live performance by that artist, they inherently engage in a proxemic exchange with the artist as well as the fans around them. This proxemic exchange is driven by fan commitment and facilitates the creation of communitas …

This paper describes the design and implementation of a technology supported learning environment that enabled interaction and collaboration between a group of sixteen intermediate and advanced level university students of Italian and a group of seven Italian native speaker facilitators. For one semester students and facilitators worked together to complete two authentic tasks and interacted with each other through the communication tools and resources of an online learning management system. These resources included both asynchronous and synchronous communication tools such as an online threaded class discussion forum, a group discussion forum, chat and email. This paper discusses the theoretical underpinnings …

Mentoring Experiences Among Female Public Relations Entrepreneurs: A Qualitative Investigation, Sabina Gaggioli
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This phenomenological study expands from current mentoring literature within the mass communication field in understanding how mentoring can contribute to the successful careers of public relations entrepreneurial women. While many scholars indicate that mentoring is effective for women, the present study describes how mentoring has affected the women participants' public relations careers and personal lives. In-depth interviews focused on following five research questions: What have been the key contributing factors in the success of public relations women entrepreneurs? How has mentoring helped the women participants achieve their goals in a public relations career and in starting their own company? Which …

Internet Use And Economic Development: Evidence And Policy Implications, Joseph J. Macdougald
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation explores how Internet use impacts four different measures of economic development using several econometric techniques on multi-country panel data. The economic development outcomes investigated are: per capita GDP, per capita export revenues, per capita market capitalization, and societal well-being as measured by the United Nations Human Development Index (HDI). Data from the World Bank, the International Telecommunication Union, and the United Nations –covering 202 countries over the period 1996 to 2007– are combined to allow for empirical investigation using dynamic panel data and finite mixture model estimation techniques on the total sample and subsamples stratified by country income …
Hold Me Tight // I Never Got The Message, Brieze Levy
Hold Me Tight // I Never Got The Message, Brieze Levy
Senior Projects Fall 2011
ARTIST STATEMENT: BRIEZE LEVY
I believe in a balance— a force that drives and thrives from resistance, ritual, imagination, and collective minds. I believe our nuances work through us like waves rippling in and out, between our bodies and our environments. My art shows an interest in the difference between ritual and routine, the power of symbols, the transmission of information and the sacred vs. profane. As an artist I am interested in how our human condition drives people into pattern, and how these patterns are added to the accumulation of time. Experience, the basic coupling of human, environment, and …

The Power Of Words: The Use Of Language In Ethan Frome, Heather Faye Spear
The Power Of Words: The Use Of Language In Ethan Frome, Heather Faye Spear
Masters Theses
Edith Wharton's novel, Ethan Frome, has been sharply criticized for its tragic ending, yet Wharton's compelling storytelling which depicts universal conditions of mankind accomplishes something powerful through its narrative: it defends language. The complicated relationship between the three main characters, Zeena, Ethan, and Mattie is rooted in their utilization of language. Using a combination of close reading for textual analysis and identifying a communicative style for each character, this thesis asserts that how the characters in this novel utilize language contests the meaninglessness and relativity supported by deconstructionists. Wharton clearly illustrates Zeena's linguistic power over both Ethan and Mattie, and …

Drawings talk about more than just a building project, or an idea. They provide an insight into the means of production, the creators mind and the medial environment. Drawings are also instruments of communication and not only construction blue prints. They can bridge the gap in between what is, what will be and how it should be.
