The Place Of Theology In A World Come Of Age: A Comparative Analysis Of The Writings Of Dietrich Bonhoeffer And Paul Ramsey., Dave Buckner
The Place Of Theology In A World Come Of Age: A Comparative Analysis Of The Writings Of Dietrich Bonhoeffer And Paul Ramsey., Dave Buckner
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
As the twentieth century dawned in the western world, there were voices both inside and out of the Christian Church that began to question religion's central place in man's daily life. Had humanity finally progressed to the point where religion was no longer necessary? Had we at long last developed the characteristics and perspectives that religion had attempted to engrain within us? Or were the rules and regulations of religion still needed to ensure the continued advancement of civilization? This is a study of two opposing voices in that debate: theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer and ethicist Paul Ramsey. What follows is …
Haim Guri And Rabbi David Buzaglo: A Theo-Political Meeting Place Of Zionist Sabra Poetry And Jewish Liturgy, Haim O. Rechnitzer
Haim Guri And Rabbi David Buzaglo: A Theo-Political Meeting Place Of Zionist Sabra Poetry And Jewish Liturgy, Haim O. Rechnitzer
Haim O Rechnitzer חיים א. רכניצר
Haim Guri’s poem Bab el Wad is arguably one of the most famous pieces of modern Zionist poetry ever created, and after being set to music, became one of Israel’s most recognizable songs. R. David Buzaglo composed the words to his piyyut “Binu Hamordim” to Shmuel Pershko’s melody to Bab el Wad. The relationship between these two works has been previously examined in the articles by Meir Buzaglo and Shimon Biton. These two scholars argue that in borrowing the melody, R. David Buzaglo was offering a critique of the Israeli ethos of commemoration encouraged by Guri, particularly with respect to …

The Meaning Of The Logos In John 1:1-18, Seokil Yoon
Masters Theses
The term λ ό γ ο ς in the New Testament is a very important word in the Bible, because it indicates the Messiah, Jesus Christ, who was predicted in the Old Testament (OT). Nevertheless, many people still do not know the meaning of the term λ ό γ ο ς . One cannot successfully study ancient philosophy or literature without understanding the term λ ό γ ο ς . The term has been used with various meanings by ancient philosophers since 500BC.1 Thus, this study will start with an examination of the meaning the term λ ό γ ο …
Examining The Primary Influence On Karl Barth's Epistle To The Romans, Sean Turchin
Examining The Primary Influence On Karl Barth's Epistle To The Romans, Sean Turchin
Masters Theses
Given the obscurity which envelops the question of intellectual influences on Karl Barth's Epistle to the Romans, it is the purpose of this work to examine the thesis provided by Bruce McCormack and to consider the themes and concepts of Romans II in order to account to what extent Barth employed Kierkegaard's own thought within this primary work.
Nietzsche As Interpreter: Against The Religious And Secular Appropriations, John D. Rivenbark
Nietzsche As Interpreter: Against The Religious And Secular Appropriations, John D. Rivenbark
Religious Studies Theses
Best known if not equally understood for having a madman proclaim the demise of God, Friedrich Nietzsche’s thought has served as a fecund resource for disparate groups advancing diverse agendas. This paper critically examines the phenomenon of invoking Nietzsche as the final word. This paper argues that, far from being a conversation-stopper, Nietzsche can be understood as enhancing dialogue, across disciplines and between groups such as philosophers and theologians more prone to militant rhetoric than fruitful dialogue. In order to validate this claim it will be necessary to examine in detail the two aspects of Nietzsche’s thought most often invoked …
Theology Of The Church As Ministry To Blind People, David Andrus
Theology Of The Church As Ministry To Blind People, David Andrus
Master of Sacred Theology Thesis
Throughout history, people who are blind have been viewed by those in the sighted culture as limited and broken. This is true both in the church and in society in general. Our ecclesiology, however, should encourage, promote, or utilize blind people and their gifts to serve in the body of Christ. The church can, and should, accept, uplift, and utilize people who are blind and visually impaired as full members with a healthy and whole identity in Christ. To this end, our ecclesiology must not prohibit the ordination of a man who is blind solely on the basis of blindness …
Biblical Hermeneutics In The Early Missouri Synod, Charles Schaum
Biblical Hermeneutics In The Early Missouri Synod, Charles Schaum
Master of Sacred Theology Thesis
We now move to the specific situation of the Missouri Synod in the nineteenth century. They will not always use terms in the same manner as today's LCMS. The importance of the material lies in its being translated into English for the first time. The reader will gain a healthy respect for the strengths of "Old Missouri" and also an understanding of its weaknesses. Lutheranism is not an "easy" sort of theology, either with regard to innovation or repristination. Yet the capacity of the early Missouri Synod to remain "on message" in what was already a markedly pluralistic society in …
Luther's Two Kinds Of Righteousness And His Wartbug Postil, Makito Masaki
Luther's Two Kinds Of Righteousness And His Wartbug Postil, Makito Masaki
Doctor of Philosophy Dissertation
This study discusses how Luther exhorted people to live the Christian life. Luther understood the Christian life as a life of the saved sinner in himself and in his community. He understood that Christians live lives defined by two kinds of righteousness; that is, righteousness that God bestows, and righteousness that they produce. This study will be carried out by reviewing this basic understanding of what the Christian life is, and by examining Luther's preaching material, specifically a set of sermonic writings called The Wartburg Postil. The thesis of this survey is that in The Wartburg Postil, Luther used the …

Teacher Training Manual For The Christian Education Program Of Bethesda Church, Rick Allen Wolgamott
Teacher Training Manual For The Christian Education Program Of Bethesda Church, Rick Allen Wolgamott
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Current teacher training in local churches often consists of asking a teacher to read pre-developed curriculum and follow the publishers’ instructions. Teachers are not being taught to critically evaluate the materials, and as a result they simply follow the directions provided. The purpose of this project is to train teachers in the local church in basic theology, hermeneutics, and preparing a Bible lesson. As a result, teachers will be trained to study Scripture and evaluate lessons based on Scriptural truth, and to prepare their own lesson plans. Recruiting and retaining teachers will become more effective as a result of providing …

The Characterisation Of God In Lamentations, Elizabeth Boase
The Characterisation Of God In Lamentations, Elizabeth Boase
Theology Papers and Journal Articles
One of the dominant characters within the book of Lamentations is God. God is spoken about and spoken to, although the voice of God is never heard. Various voices within the text speak of God, describing both God’s actions and God’s attributes. These descriptions give rise to various, and at times conflicting images: God is the violent destroyer of the city and her inhabitants; God is an absent God, whose presence is longed for; God is a God of steadfast love and mercy; God is the one in whom future hope lies. This paper analyses the multifaceted portrayal of the …
