A.F.C. Vilmar: Theology Of Church And Ministry, Martin E. Conkling
A.F.C. Vilmar: Theology Of Church And Ministry, Martin E. Conkling
Doctor of Philosophy Dissertation
Conkling, Martin E. "A. F. C. Vilmar: Theology of Church and Ministry." Ph.D. diss., Concordia Seminary, 2007. 271 pp.
This historical study explores the theology of A. F. C. Vilmar. The theology of church and ministry championed by Vilmar received critical attention in his own day, and he remains a bright star in the constellation of nineteenth century Lutheran theologians who sought to restore Lutheranism to the strength of its confessional origins and to correct the cultural tendencies of thought gone wrong in revolutionary Europe. Little secondary literature exists on this "Theologian of Fact" in English, and virtually none of his …
The Tragedy Of Death In The Pursuit Of Spiritual Immortality, And The Physician’S Response, Rachel Furman
The Tragedy Of Death In The Pursuit Of Spiritual Immortality, And The Physician’S Response, Rachel Furman
Senior Honors Projects
Life is a tragedy in the sense that it amounts to one single contradiction: man will die, and knows this, yet he still does not want to die. He thus spends his entire life fighting the battle to survive, though he knows that victory is impossible. That is, victory in the sense of corporeal immortality is impossible – but what happens to the soul? That human soul, which we have come to distinguish from the body by placing it above the temporal world, and equating it with eternity. Belief in immortality, in this case, spiritual immortality, is, according to Miguel …
William Of Auvergne And Popular Demonology, Thomas De Mayo
William Of Auvergne And Popular Demonology, Thomas De Mayo
Quidditas
Theologian and bishop of Paris during St. Louis’ early reign, William of Auvergne (d. 1249) aimed in his life and writings to combat the myriad threats he perceived as facing Christianity. The early thirteenth century saw many potential competitors to official doctrines concerning the natural and supernatural worlds—Arabic philosophy imported into the universities, heretical attacks on the institutional church, and persistent folk beliefs and practices. William attributed these challenges to an underlying demonic conspiracy directed against humankind. This paper examines William’s treatment of popular beliefs on the Wild Hunt, a mysterious congregation of spirits, and related beliefs about female spirits …

Orts: The George MacDonald Society Newsletter
In the summer of 2005, just as we were commemorating the centenary of George MacDonald's death, I received a surprise telephone call from Kate Davies. She was helping two aunts to move out of their large house in Sanderstead, Surrey and into sheltered accommodation and had discovered a large collection of George MacDonald books, many of them first editions and many signed by the author, that had belonged to her aunts' grandfather, William Carey Davies, a Croydon man (south of London) who had been George's private secretary in his later years. Her aunts' father, George MacDonald Davies, had had a …

The Spirit, Christian Practices, And The Religions: Theology Of Religions In Pentecostal And Pneumatological Perspective, Amos Yong
The Asbury Journal
The discussion of Christian theology of religions has focused primarily so far on the question of whether or not the Christian understanding of salvation is available through other religions to their adherents. The predominant responses of exclusivism, inclusivism, and pluralism have shaped the debate and serve as a typology for organizing the various theologies of religions. While Pentecostals have generally fallen into the exclusivist category - e.g., that salvation is available only to those who have converted to Christian faith - there are also other resources related to their views regarding the universal work of the Holy Spirit that have …

Phenomenology, Theology And Psychosis: Towards Compassion, Glenn J. Morrison
Phenomenology, Theology And Psychosis: Towards Compassion, Glenn J. Morrison
Theology Papers and Journal Articles
The article argues for a phenomenological and theological perspective of psychosis. It draws especially upon Levinas’ philosophy as a way of looking at psychosis and responding with compassion. It aims to show that the world of psychosis parallels the Levinas’ negative characterisation of both ontology and the categories of objectivity, presence and Being. This suggests that the language of ontology itself holds insights into the experience of psychosis and perhaps further that the language of alterity (otherness) could be a possible response to it. Psychosis should not be understood as a ‘psychological problem’, but rather as an altered state of …
Contemporary Attempts At Overcoming Decadence And Revitalizing Qur’Anic Thought, Muhammad Ata Al-Sid
Contemporary Attempts At Overcoming Decadence And Revitalizing Qur’Anic Thought, Muhammad Ata Al-Sid
Business Review
After the Prophet’s death, difficult internal problems arose and they needed quick answers. Muslims were killing one another in the struggle for the Caliphate between ‘Ali and Mu’awiyah, then between the Umawis and the ‘Abbasis, the death of Hasan and Husayn, the massacre of the umawise, the withdrawal of the Khawarji from a community which they regarded as hopelessly involved in sin, the breach between Sunnis and Shi’is were all crises which vigorously tested the Muslims’ understanding of the word of God.
"Shared Values In Communal Life: Provisional Skepticism And The Prospect Of A Global Ethic", Scott R. Paeth
"Shared Values In Communal Life: Provisional Skepticism And The Prospect Of A Global Ethic", Scott R. Paeth
Scott R. Paeth
This article examines the prospects for the development of a global ethic in a pluralistic and morally fragmented world. Arguing that a set of shared values, such as those proposed by Leonard Swidler and Hans Kiing, must contend with the realities of human self-interest and social dislocation, the author seeks constructively to critique the project of a global ethic from a position of "provisional skepticism." In the final section, he considers some ways of overcoming provisional skepticism, arguing finally in favor of the development of a global civil society, which can embody and channel the diversity of moral perspectives within …
