Activities that a person engages in at work to express their faith might not, on the surface, reveal much about why they do what they do.

Robert Boyle’S Religious Life, Attitudes, And Vocation, Edward B. Davis Jun 2007

Robert Boyle’S Religious Life, Attitudes, And Vocation, Edward B. Davis

Biology Educator Scholarship

Robert Boyle is an outstanding example of a Christian scientist whose faith interacted fundamentally with his science. His remarkable piety was the driving force behind his interest in science and his Christian character shaped the ways in which he conducted his scientific life. A deep love for scripture, coupled ironically with a lifelong struggle with religious doubt, led him to write several important books relating scientific and religious knowledge. Ultimately, he was attracted to the mechanical philosophy because he thought it was theologically superior to traditional Aristotelian natural philosophy: by denying the existence of a quasi-divine ‘Nature’ that functioned as …

A Household To Be Gathered-The Anointing At Bethany And The Day Of Jesus' Death In The Gospel According To John, Jonathan A. Blanke May 2007

A Household To Be Gathered-The Anointing At Bethany And The Day Of Jesus' Death In The Gospel According To John, Jonathan A. Blanke

Doctor of Philosophy Dissertation

Blanke, Jonathan A. "A Household to Be Gathered: The Anointing at Bethany and the Day of Jesus' Death in the Gospel according to John." Ph.D. diss., Concordia Seminary, 2007.224 pp.

This dissertation focuses on the theological significance of the anointing at Bethany in the Fourth Gospel and its relationship to the passion and death of Jesus. The dissertation responds to the conclusion of much twentieth-century scholarship that John 12:1-7 is essentially meaningful as a text that evolved from an oral tradition comparable to other anointings of Jesus with perfume by unnamed women in the Synoptic Gospels. It supplements this prior …

"Hti's Collaborations At Princeton And Beyond", Peter J. Casarella Jan 2007

"Hti's Collaborations At Princeton And Beyond", Peter J. Casarella

Peter J. Casarella

From April 19-21, 2007, I had the distinct pleasure of accompanying HTI scholars Néstor Medina (Toronto School of Theology) and Jacqueline M. Hidalgo (Claremont Graduate University, California) to an international gathering of theologians as well as several influential religious journalists. The meeting took place at the Center of Theological Inquiry (CTI) in Princeton. HTI and CTI are neighbors, both located on the campus of Princeton Theological Seminary and separated only by Speer Library. Our journey across the street, so to speak, represents one of a few recent collaborative initiatives that have brought these two institutions closer together. It was also …

Seeing It Straight, Heather Harvey Jan 2007

Seeing It Straight, Heather Harvey

Theses and Dissertations

This Master of Fine Arts thesis is divided into four main sections:FAITH and DISBELIEF: In which I reckon with the implications of faith versus rationality as a secular nontheistic artist. IDEAS: The central locus of my work is a place of indeterminacy between what is known/familiar and what is just one step outside of that. This has nothing to do with mysticism, science fiction, or anything else unmoored from established fact. Section also touches on the particular vantage of a female artist with working class roots.THE WORK: Selection of work made during graduate school, and the the guiding thoughts behind …

The Faith Of Christ, Gaye Strathearn Jan 2007

The Faith Of Christ, Gaye Strathearn

Faculty Publications

AT THE 1988 MEETING OF THE Pauline Theology Group, a debate exploded that had been slowly percolating since the time of Martin Luther.¹ The debate focused on the translation and associated theological implications of eight passages (Romans 3:22, 26; Galatians 2:16, 20; 3:22, 26; Ephesians 3:12; Philippians 3:9).² Each of these passages consists of a phrase with the Greek word pistis (“faith”) in a genitive construction with a title for Jesus.³ Paul uses seven of them in his discussions of justification, showing how a believer is “made righteous.” The eighth passage, Ephesians 3:12, uses the genitive construction to describe how …
