Transducer Dynamics, Egor Dolzhenko Dec 2007

Transducer Dynamics, Egor Dolzhenko

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Transducers are finite state automata with an output. In this thesis, we attempt to classify sequences that can be constructed by iteratively applying a transducer to a given word. We begin exploring this problem by considering sequences of words that can be produced by iterative application of a transducer to a given input word, i.e., identifying sequences of words of the form w, t(w), t²(w), . . . We call such sequences transducer recognizable. Also we introduce the notion of "recognition of a sequence in context", which captures the possibility of concatenating prefix and suffix words to each word in …

Suzan-Lori Parks’S The America Play And Its Deconstructive Ontology, Rachel A. Naor Dec 2007

Suzan-Lori Parks’S The America Play And Its Deconstructive Ontology, Rachel A. Naor

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

I intend to showcase Suzan-Lori Parks's repetitious, supplemental virtuosity, which is a testament to the fluid, indeterminate condition of her concepts. I seek to demonstrate that in textualizing the quality of absence in the written dialogue, Parks's The America Play becomes uniquely deconstructive. For indeed, through the absent "presence" of an historically mythified president and a gravedigger's skewed identity, the play becomes a stage for splinters of historicized, differentiating, repeating signifiers that supplement, even as they redefine, their referential signified. Performing deconstructive thinking, Parks's textuality is accommodated by a content through which she calls attention to the structures of metaphysics …

A Novel Biostable 3d Porous Collagen Scaffold For Implantable Biosensor, Young Min Ju Dec 2007

A Novel Biostable 3d Porous Collagen Scaffold For Implantable Biosensor, Young Min Ju

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Diabetes is a chronic metabolic disorder whereby the body loses its ability to maintain normal glucose levels. Despite of development of implantable glucose sensors in long periods, none of the biosensors are capable of continuously monitoring glucose levels during long-term implantation reliably. Progressive loss of sensor function occurs due in part to biofouling and to the consequences of a foreign body response such as inflammation, fibrosis, and loss of vasculature.

In order to improve the function and lifetime of implantable glucose sensors, a new 3D porous and bio-stable collagen scaffold has been developed to improve the biocompatibility of implantable glucose …

Synthesis Of Novel Cysteine Peptide Nucleic Acid (Cpna), Mehul J. Ajmera Dec 2007

Synthesis Of Novel Cysteine Peptide Nucleic Acid (Cpna), Mehul J. Ajmera

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Many diseases are caused due to abnormalities in production of specific protein. Across this protein the conventional lock and key mechanism shows binding at the specific cites of protein. However use of antisense technology can prevent formation of protein. It does so by binding to mRNA and prevents transcription. The structural modifications lead to synthetic molecules with 18-mer units which show significant improvement in binding properties, this gives birth to a new class of oligomers called Peptide Nucleic Acid (PNA). We herein report cysteine based PNA called CPNA.

Privacy In Database Designs: A Role Based Approach, Gary A. Poe Nov 2007

Privacy In Database Designs: A Role Based Approach, Gary A. Poe

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Privacy concerns have always been present in every society. The introduction of information technology information has enabled a reduction in the cost of gathering information, management of that information and the permitted that same information to become increasingly portable. Coupled with these reductions of cost has been an increase in the demand for information as well as the concern that privacy expectations be respected and enforced through security systems that safeguard access to private-type data. Security systems enforce privacy expectations. Unfortunately there is no consensus on a definition of privacy making the specification of security often over broad and resulting …

Subconstituent Algebras Of Latin Squares, Ibtisam Daqqa Nov 2007

Subconstituent Algebras Of Latin Squares, Ibtisam Daqqa

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Let n be a positive integer. A Latin square of order n is an n×n array L such that each element of some n-set occurs in each row and in each column of L exactly once. It is well-known that one may construct a 4-class association scheme on the positions of a Latin square, where the relations are the identity, being in the same row, being in the same column, having the same entry, and everything else. We describe the subconstituent (Terwilliger) algebras of such an association scheme. One also may construct several strongly regular graphs on the positions …

How Similar Are Personality Scales Of The “Same” Construct? A Meta-Analytic Investigation, Victoria L. Pace Nov 2007

How Similar Are Personality Scales Of The “Same” Construct? A Meta-Analytic Investigation, Victoria L. Pace

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In recent years, meta-analytic reviews have estimated validities for the use of personality scales in the prediction of job performance from an array of empirical studies. A variety of personality measures were used in the original studies, and procedures and decisions concerning the categorization of these measures into Big Five personality factors have differed among reviewers. An underlying assumption of meta-analysis is that the predictors across included studies are essentially the same, as is the criterion. If this is not the case, then problems arise for both theoretical reasons and practical applications. If predictors that are not highly correlated are …

"Either You Conquer It, Or It Conquers You": An Applied Anthropological Approach To Veterans With A Spinal Cord Injury, Sherman Chow Nov 2007

"Either You Conquer It, Or It Conquers You": An Applied Anthropological Approach To Veterans With A Spinal Cord Injury, Sherman Chow

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Veterans with a spinal cord injury (SCI) engage in a complex and, often times, difficult dialogue within and through interactions in American society. That is, American society holds dear certain traditional values (ideals, beliefs, and customs) that promote the steady functioning and fabric of society. Through the process of enculturation and acculturation, likely, the majority of American citizens have already internalized many of these values. These values are cultural constructs of American society that can certainly influence and shape the myriad ways in which individual identity is formed.

By identifying these value sets and analyzing the ways in which SCI …

Land Use Policy And Practices In Karst Terrains, Spencer Fleury Nov 2007

Land Use Policy And Practices In Karst Terrains, Spencer Fleury

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Karst topography is the result of a specific combination of geological conditions, precipitation, biota, and temperature, and is characterized by the gradual solution of the underlying bedrock and the development of underground drainage routes for surficial runoff. Many of these karst landscapes are found in urbanized areas, where the potential for anthropogenic impact is quite high. In many instances, municipalities on karst terrains choose to mitigate these impacts by implementing ordinances that place restrictions on permissible land uses near karst landforms. This dissertation asks the question: are the impacts of karst-related land use regulation on human / social systems significant …

The Validity Of Personality Trait Interactions For The Prediction Of Managerial Job Performance, Amy M. Taylor Nov 2007

The Validity Of Personality Trait Interactions For The Prediction Of Managerial Job Performance, Amy M. Taylor

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Personality variables have been shown to be significant predictors of job performance (Barrick & Mount, 1991; Tett, Jackson, & Rothstein, 1991). Recent advances in methodology for analyzing personality-job performance relationships indicate that interactions among traits may yield incremental validity. Job types in which performance has been shown to relate to trait interactions include clerical jobs, jobs with high interpersonal components, and jobs in realistic and conventional contexts, (Witt, Burke, Barrick, & Mount, 2002; Burke & Witt, 2002; and Burke & Witt, 2004). This study examined the validity of trait interactions for the prediction of managerial job performance. Hypotheses included a …

Effects Of Nutrients From The Water Column On The Growth Of Benthic Microalgae In Permeable Sediments, Brian P. Darrow

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In some continental shelf sediments integrated benthic microalgal biomass is greater than the integrated phytoplankton biomass in the overlying water column. In addition, benthic microalgae may account for up to 10% of the primary production responsible for the coastal fishery yield of the eastern United States.

A three-dimensional model of the eastern Gulf of Mexico examines the effects of water-column nutrient sources on the growth of benthic microalgae. To parameterize the exchange of nutrients across the sediment/water interface in these permeable sediments, a non-local exchange submodel was constructed and tested within the framework of the model's grid.

Based on the …

Equilibrium Bidding In Joint Transmission And Energy Markets, Cihan Babayigit

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Participants in deregulated electric power markets compete for financial transmission rights (FTRs) to hedge against losses due to transmission congestion by submitting bids to the independent system operator (ISO). The ISO obtains an FTR allocation, that maximizes sales revenue while satisfying simultaneous feasibility. This FTR allocation remains in place for a length of time during which the participants compete in the energy market to maximize their total payoff from both FTR and energy markets. Energy markets (bi-lateral, day ahead, real time) continue until the the end of the current FTR period, at which time the participants can choose to modify …

Design And Modeling Of A Bistable Spherical Compliant Micromechanism, Joseph Georges Choueifati Nov 2007

Design And Modeling Of A Bistable Spherical Compliant Micromechanism, Joseph Georges Choueifati

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Compliant bistable mechanisms are mechanisms that have two stable equilibrium positions within their range of motion. Their bistability is mainly due to the elasticity of their members. This thesis introduces a new type of bistable micromechanisms, the Bistable, Spherical, Compliant, four-bar Micromechanism (BSCM). Theory to predict bistable positions and configurations is also developed. Bistabilty was demonstrated through testing done on micro-prototypes. Compared to the mathematical model of the BSCM, Finite element models of the BSCM indicated important qualitative differences in the mechanism's stability behavior and its input-angle-input torque relation. The BSCM has many valuable features, such as: Two stable positions …
