A diagnosis of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder is given when a child exhibits developmentally inappropriate levels of inattention, impulsivity and hyperactivity. In addition to academic and behavior problems, these children often have significant social problems. Since social problems are associated with a greater risk for developing problems later in life, a number of interventions have been attempted to normalize the social interactions of children with ADHD. These have included stimulant medication, cognitive-behavioral interventions, behavior modification, and social skills training. Additionally, attempts have been made to maximize the benefits of these interventions by combining them. Typically this involves combining stimulant medication with one …

The idea of non-interference in the domestic affairs of states has been a hallmark of international relations since the seventeenth century. The universalisation of the nation-state model following decolonisation over the twentieth century rendered this ideal of state sovereignty the basis of the modem international political system. States mostly keep out of each other’s business, but intervention may take the form of war to enforce regime change.

The possibility of an ‘arc of instability’1 across the Western Pacific states of Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Vanuatu and Fiji carries serious security concerns for the entire Pacific region. This paper examines Australian-led interventions in Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands to analyse the effects that they are having on the concept of sovereignty, both for states in the Western Pacific region and for international relations more generally. It argues that the nation-state ideal is under severe strain and that failed states are symptomatic of a wider problem of legitimacy, caused in part by the liberal assumption underpinning …

Social skills training was investigated in an after-school program setting with four seven- and eight-year-old males. Two were Hispanic and two were African-American. Social skills training consisted of a direct instruction, behavioral learning model of skillstreaming as described by McGinnis & Goldstein (1997). There were four major components to each social skills training session: (1) an explanation of the skill being taught; (2) modeling by the researcher of the skill being taught; (3) role play by each of the participants; and (4) performance feedback regarding the role plays. Sessions lasted approximately 30 minutes and were held weekly throughout the intervention …
