The Ideology Of Terror: Why We Will Never Win The 'War', Katie Rose Guest Pryal
The Ideology Of Terror: Why We Will Never Win The 'War', Katie Rose Guest Pryal
Katie Rose Guest Pryal
A few days after the criminal attacks on the World Trade Center, President George W. Bush declared a metaphorical war on terror. The word “war” was once again applied to a nebulous concept in hopes of rallying support to Bush’s plans. Had Bush declared war on “terrorism,” a noun that denotes physical acts of violence, the war would have remained attached to the material world. By declaring war on “terror,” America’s enemy became ephemeral and eternal. Using Althusser's theory of ideology, this article demonstrates how the public rhetoric of terror created an “ideology of terror” that created support for Bush's …

The Problem Of Moral Dirigisme: A New Argument Against Moralistic Legislation, Mario Rizzo
The Problem Of Moral Dirigisme: A New Argument Against Moralistic Legislation, Mario Rizzo
Mario Rizzo
This Article applies a theory of rational choice to moral decisionmaking. In this theory, agents act primarily on local and personal knowledge to instantiate moral principles, virtues and moral goods. The State may seek to prevent them from acting as they independently determine by prescribing or proscribing certain conduct by formal legal means. If its purpose is to ensure that people act morally or become better persons, we call this “moral dirigisme.” Our thesis is that the need to use decentralized knowledge to determine the moral status of an act makes the task of the moral dirigiste well-neigh impossible. The …

Setting A Publick Table: Food And Food Service At A Colonial And Early American New Jersey Tavern, Megan E. Springate
Megan E. Springate
The Blue Ball, a tavern located in Shrewsbury, New Jersey served primarily a local clientele from 1754 through 1814. Excavations on the site of the still-standing structure have revealed a wealth of information regarding the preparation and service of food from the late Colonial through the Early American period. Using documentary and archaeological evidence, this paper will explore the menu and the table settings found at The Blue Ball. The Blue Ball, open to the public as The Allen House, a colonial tavern interpretation, is owned by the Monmouth County Historical Association.

Brothers In Strife: Compadre, Amber Benham
Brothers In Strife: Compadre, Amber Benham
Amber Benham
What does it mean to call someone a brother? This question resonates with Swedish director Mikael Wiström after having befriended Daniel Barrientos, a strong-willed man who struggles against polio and the severe poverty that threatens his family in Lima, Peru. Over the course of his more than 30-year friendship with Daniel, whom he calls hermano, Wiström is met with the challenge of understanding how much responsibility he must take for the inequality in the two men’s lives. Compadre is the second of Wiström’s films to document the extraordinary poverty faced by the Barrientos family.

Interlinking Of Rivers In India , Pankaj Singh, Dharamveer Singh Chauhan
Pankaj Singh
Interlinking of major rivers in India, aimed at modifying the acute spatial inequity in the availability of water resources in India, has its origin in the ideas of K.L.Rao and Captain Dastur, in the form of Ganga-Cauvery Link Canal and the Garland Canal respectively. Both these ideas were considered to be mere dreams and not feasible projects by the Ministry of Water Resources. In recent years, the National Water Development Agency (NWDA) has come up with a proposal for a set of inter-basin transfer canals. The Supreme Court has asked that these projects of inter-basin transfers be completed in the …
Race And Blues Tourism: A Comparison Of Two Lodging Alternatives In Clarksdale, Mississippi, Stephen A. King
Race And Blues Tourism: A Comparison Of Two Lodging Alternatives In Clarksdale, Mississippi, Stephen A. King
Stephen A. King
This article compares several lodging alternatives in Clarksdale, Mississippi. Blues tourism in the Delta has been characterized by decentralized efforts as well as fragmentation with each Delta community competing for tourists, money, and prestige. Yet there is evidence that the development and promotion of blues tourism are fast becoming a more organized and centralized phenomenon. Located on the outskirts of Clarksdale, Mississippi, the Shack Up Inn offer tourists the opportunity to sleep in one of six renovated sharecroppers' shacks.

This essay discusses three axioms of sociopoietic theory from the point of view of philosophy of social science. The first axiom, its de-ontologised character, it is associated to theory formalism and it allows to question the validity of a factual theory that do not presuppose the reality. The second one, allow to discuss the pertinence of the social system concept adopted by the sociopoietic view. Finally, argue that a theory about something it is not possible without having an explanation about this "something", and it is asked how an epistemology of the event can acquired content excluding the radical determinism …

The Laws Of War In The Pre-Dawn Light: Institutions And Obligations In Thucydides’ Peloponnesian War, Steve Sheppard
The Laws Of War In The Pre-Dawn Light: Institutions And Obligations In Thucydides’ Peloponnesian War, Steve Sheppard
Steve Sheppard
This Essay, in honor of Oscar Schachter, discusses Thucydides’ account of the Peloponnesian War, not only glimpsing into the events surrounding the conflict but also considering how the sparring greek city-states understood and manifested laws of war. This article describes numerous customs, practices, and procedures including respect for truces, ambassadors, heralds, trophies, and various forms of neutrality the ancients adhered to during times of conflict. The greek city-states and their warriors recognized and enforced obligations concerning a city-state’s right to war (jus ad bellum) and conduct in war (jus in bello). While the ancients’ laws of war were always recorded …
