Handbook On The Wisdom Books And Psalms, Daniel J. Estes
Handbook On The Wisdom Books And Psalms, Daniel J. Estes
Faculty Books
In this work, Daniel Estes introduces students to the Old Testament poetical books--Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and Song of Songs. Each chapter explores one of the five poetical books. Estes first summarizes some of the book's key issues. He then devotes the main portion of the chapter to an exposition of the book, interacting with major commentaries and recent studies. Each chapter concludes with an extensive bibliography, allowing for further exploration. Following in the tradition of Handbook on the Pentateuch (over sixty thousand copies sold), this valuable resource will help pastors, students, Sunday school teachers, and Bible study leaders better …
Luke 15: The Heart Of God, Terry N. Barnes
Luke 15: The Heart Of God, Terry N. Barnes
SOR Faculty Publications and Presentations
The fifteenth chapter of Luke recounts a contentious exchange between Jesus and the Pharisees, a confrontation where the Pharisees essentially attacked the moral character of Christ. After all, he accepted the company of wretched sinners.
In response to this grumbling, Jesus told them “this parable” (Luke 15:3). Yet what followed was not one but rather three stories: the story of the lost lamb, the lost coin, and what is commonly but incorrectly known as the prodigal son.
Yet these three stories are merely a three time recounting of a unified message. They were told to the same audience, they have …

Jewish Perspective, Asher Finkel Ph.D.
Jewish Perspective, Asher Finkel Ph.D.
Rabbi Asher Finkel, Ph.D.
Almost two millennia of confrontation, vilification and recrimination marked the relationship of the offspring Christianity and its mother religion, Judaism from the first century. Now, a new chapter of the encounter has opened since Vatican II with a papal declaration on the relation of the Church to Judaism and to non-Christian religions. A meaningful dialogue of mutual respect was pursued that led to the apologetic reconciliation and positive reorientation to the common Biblical tradition of Jews and Christians. The encounter has now changed from past relationship of disputation and intolerance to seeking understanding from the ground of faith in canonical …
The Gentile Mission In Old Testament Citations In Acts-Text, Hermeneutic, And Purpose, James Meek
The Gentile Mission In Old Testament Citations In Acts-Text, Hermeneutic, And Purpose, James Meek
Doctor of Philosophy Dissertation
Meek, James A. "The Gentile Mission in Old Testament Citations in Acts: Text, Hermeneutic, and Purpose." Ph.D. diss., Concordia Seminary, 2005,341 pp.
Study of the Old Testament in Luke-Acts has focused on the role of the Old Testament in development of Luke's Christology. Explicit citations and summary statements of Old Testament teaching, however, support five main themes: the death and resurrection of Christ, eschatological blessings, judgment, rejection of the gospel by many Jews, and the inclusion of all who believe in Jesus (including Gentiles). The question "Who are the people of God?" is posed both by the rejection of the …

Ritual Legitimacy And Scriptural Authority, James W. Watts
Ritual Legitimacy And Scriptural Authority, James W. Watts
Religion - All Scholarship
In this essay, James W. Watts explains the interdependence of texts and rituals with regard to ancient religions. Specifically, he outlines patterns of practice and developments in the ritual use of texts and the texual authorization of rituals in antiquity.
Watts also makes the case that beyond the interplay of texual authority and ritual legitimacy that most ancient cultures engaged in, Judaism was unique in elevating the Torah along with its other laws and stories to special "scriptural" status.

Revelation And The Left Behind Novels, Craig R. Koester
Revelation And The Left Behind Novels, Craig R. Koester
Faculty Publications
The Left Behind novels appeal because they affirm God's control of history in the face of violence and moral decay. Our challenge is to be more biblical than Left Behind, not less biblical to hear Revelation's call to persevere in the face of evil and to trust in the final victory of God and the Lamb.

Tribulations Of The Patriarch Joseph And Jesus In Greek And Latin Piety, Lawrence E. Frizzell D.Phil.
Reverend Lawrence E. Frizzell, S.T.L., S.S.L., D.Phil.
The dramatic account of Joseph and his brothers in Genesis 37-50 has been the subject of many commentaries and reflections, by both Jews and Christians. How have the questions of crime and forgiveness been treated as a major theme by Christians? From early texts the pious effort to interpret the biblical message into a coherent whole led to a link between Joseph and Jesus. How has this been developed in the first millennium of Christianity? Father Frizzell examined this theme in “Tribulations of the Patriarch Joseph and Jesus in Greek and Latin Piety,” which he originally presented at the Medieval …
